NEW ARTICLE 📢 ZeroW: Fighting Food Waste During the Holidays – and Beyond! The holiday season brings joy and celebration but also peaks in food waste. In Denmark alone, households discard 247,000 tons of food annually, with a significant portion wasted during Christmas due to overbuying and overproduction. Reducing food waste requires joint efforts from producers, retailers, and consumers: 1️⃣ Smart Forecasting: Using data to optimize production and stock management. 2️⃣ Retailer Initiatives: Discounting near-expiry goods, donating surplus, and partnering with online platforms, selling surplus to consumers. 3️⃣ "Ugly" Foods & Consumer Education: Selling cosmetically imperfect produce and educating on "use by" vs. "best before" dates. ZeroW, part of the EU’s goal to halve food waste by 2030, collaborates with 42 partners to develop innovative solutions. By measuring waste and testing ideas in Systemic Innovation Living Labs, we aim to eliminate food waste across the entire value chain. Let’s make this holiday season a model for sustainability. Together, we can value food and minimize waste. Read the article ⬇️ or visit our website ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e_X2E_gr for more valuable insights.

Innovations Towards a Zero Food Waste Supply Chain.
Om os
While one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally each year, the ZeroW project is launching to help the transition of current food systems towards halving Food Loss & Waste (FLW) by 2030 and reaching a near-zero level by 2050. The project is funded by The European Union under Grant Agreement no. 101036388. ZeroW is driving innovations for zero food waste by: - Developing data-driven applications to reduce Food Loss & Waste throughout the supply chain from pre-harvest, production, processing, wholesale & retail to consumption. - Creating systemic innovation through 9 living labs across the EU. - Making policy recommendations for the EU.

Countdown to 2025: ZeroW’s Final Chapter Continues!⌛ As we approach the final year of the ZeroW project, we are excited to share another milestone in our journey: scientific advancements that are paving the way for sustainable food systems. Over the past 3 years, the ZeroW project has published several scientific articles showcasing valuable insights to the global conversation on reducing Food Loss and Waste (FLW). These publications, authored by experts from Tilburg University, Wageningen University & Research, TNO, ITC - Innovation Technology Cluster, Univerza v Mariboru, and Universidade do Minho highlight innovative approaches and findings that support the transition to sustainable food systems. All publications are available on our website. We encourage you to explore these resources if you are interested in the latest scientific breakthroughs in FLW reduction and circular food systems! https://lnkd.in/dg6qtY9F #ZeroW #ScientificResearch #FoodWaste #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Innovation

⌛Countdown to 2025: ZeroW’s Final Chapter Begins! As 2024 comes to an end, we are reflecting on the incredible journey of the ZeroW project and the milestones we have achieved so far. With just one year remaining, it is the perfect time to revisit some of the impactful activities and initiatives we have driven forward. First up: a look back at the policy recommendations that we presented at the Towards Halving Food Waste Conference in June. These insights are shaping the future of food systems, and we are excited to see how they will inspire action as we approach the finish line in the project – but not in the fight against food loss and waste! Stay tuned for more highlights from ZeroW’s mission to reduce food waste and create a sustainable, circular food system. 🌱♻️🥪 #FoodWaste #PolicyInnovation #Sustainability #ZeroWaste #ZeroW

🌍 Learnings from Spain: Tackling Food Waste, Reducing Hunger, & Promoting Sustainability in the Food System 🍊🥖🥪 🍏 Innovative solutions developed in the ZeroW project are ready to be implemented to reduce post-harvest food losses. However, for these solutions to make a real impact, we need policy changes and a reorganization of the supply chain. That’s why ZeroW partners and key stakeholders traveled to Barcelona to learn from organizations at the forefront of food waste reduction, surplus redistribution, and sustainable production. Our aim was to discover how we can adapt these strategies in Flanders to create a more circular and sustainable food system. Insights: 💡 Indulleida – A fruit processor that adapts to unpredictable fruit supplies by using every part of the fruit, ensuring full production year-round. Their partnership with food banks to process surplus fruit into juice is a great example of circularity. 💡 Talkual Food – A subscription service rescuing ‘imperfect’ fruits and vegetables for direct delivery to consumers. This model cuts food waste while providing fresh, affordable produce. 💡 Foodbanks of Barcelona – A central player in redistributing donations, Barcelona’s food banks support local charities with logistics and infrastructure while raising public awareness of food waste. 💡 Espigoladores – A non-profit that reduces food waste and supports vulnerable groups by gleaning surplus produce, turning it into marmalade, soup, and spreads. The ‘es imperfect’ brand is a fantastic commercial example that we’re keen to replicate in Belgium! 💡 Catalonian Government – Spain’s mandatory food redistribution law is a benchmark. The special fund for transforming surplus fruits into juices for food banks highlights the importance of incentives. 💡 Folou Project – We’re excited by the tools developed to measure and reduce food loss and waste. We look forward to exploring future collaborations! 🔑 Our Key Takeway: Collaboration across the food value chain, consumer education, policy support, and creating value-added products are all crucial to building a sustainable and circular food system. #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #FoodWaste #ZeroWaste #Collaboration #Innovation #FoodSystem #ZeroW

In September, Boerenbond organized an inspiring Makeathon, in which students of Food and Dietetics of the UCLL college were challenged to develop innovative food products with residual streams of cauliflower and zucchini. The initiative aimed to combat food waste and maximize the use of valuable raw materials that normally fall outside the food chain. 👉Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dHdA8eYt #innovation #foodwaste #sidestreams #EUinMyRegion

🌍 In the fight against food waste, the ZeroW project is developing a sustainable, compostable packaging solution with a smart freshness label for fish, in our Living Lab 2: Sustainable and Smart Packaging. By integrating compostable materials and a colorimetric freshness label, we’re addressing one of the biggest challenges in the food industry: accurately determining product shelf life. This not only helps reduce waste but also ensures that perfectly good fish doesn't end up discarded due to date label misinterpretation. 📊 Did you know? 35% of fishery and aquaculture catches are lost or wasted annually (FAO, 2020). 10% of the 88 million tonnes of EU food waste is linked to date label misinterpretation. The goal? Reduce food waste and lower carbon footprints. Stay tuned for updates - our first version is expected by the end of 2024! 🌱🐟 #Innovation #Sustainability #PackagingSolutions #FoodWaste #CircularEconomy #SmartPackaging #ZeroWproject
