Looking into the sky – Space Observation, education, engineering and research! 🌟 Looking up, the Danish flag flew as René Michelsen, Lise Bech Christensen - the two Danish ESO Council members - and I arrived at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Headquarters just north of Munich. What a warm welcome to the astronomically shaped ESO! Denmark is a member of the European Southern Observatory which among other things counts the Very Large Telescope and in the future the Extremely Large Telescope, which is being built in Chile as we speak! (Yes, this is what they are called! 🤩) We were invited to talk about future opportunities for Danish researchers and engineers, as Denmark is in a good position to increase the engagement with ESO. It was also a pleasure to meet two Danish employees spontaneously! Also, the ESO has an open data repository for research. We talked about possible training programmes – how to connect the Danish universities’ education in engineering and research with the ESO goals? And opportunities for Danish industry. ESO does a lot of outreach at the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre – where schools are welcomed and can e.g. see Danish space discoveries. Exhibitions are free of charge. Thank you to Xavier Barcons, ESO Director General, Claudia Burger, Director of Administration, Dr Sara Krauss, ESO Director of Engineering Designate, Bruno Leibundgut, Director for Science, Adrian Russell, Director of Programmes, Françoise Delplancke-Ströbele, Executive Officer for the Directorate of Engineering and a special thanks to Laura Comendador Frutos, Head of the Executive Office of the Director General, for organising the meeting and to Samuel Leveque for showing us the Large Integration Hall for testing the new equipment for the Extremely Large Telescope! We look forward to continue our conversation on space exploration, collaboration and training in 2025! Yanick Deusser, Klaus Werner, Benedikta Harris, Marco Thomas Lund, Gry Bærenholdt Klein, René Michelsen, Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science, Lise Bech Christensen, Associate Professor at Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen;
