+++ New EU-Funded Project to Drive Metallurgical Industry Towards Zero Emissions and Circular Carbon +++ The European Union has awarded a €17 million grant to the EMPHATICAL project, which will support the metallurgical industry towards achieving zero emissions and carbon circularity by 2050. Launched in November 2024, EMPHATICAL will develop a First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) demonstrator plant aimed at integrating cutting-edge technologies to capture and convert CO₂ into e-methanol, using green hydrogen and renewable energy. Key Highlights of EMPHATICAL: 🔹 Innovative CO₂ Capture: The project will demonstrate an energy-efficient process to capture residual CO and CO₂ gases from electrified metallurgical industries. 🔹 Electrified Metallurgy & Methanol Production: The project aims to validate a sustainable, cost-effective, and scalable process that can reduce CO₂ emissions while creating valuable products like e-methanol. 🔹 Aims for 41 Million Tons of CO₂ Reduction by 2050, contributing significantly to meeting climate goals. The project consortium brings together 17 leading partners from across Europe and industry players (TNO, Politecnico di Milano, CA.RE FOR. Engineering, Delft University of Technology, CSIC, CIRCE - Centro Tecnológico, Swerim AB, German Aerospace Center (DLR), LEAP s.c.a r.l., INERIS, CO2 Value Europe, Universidad Pontificia Comillas, UCL, Vargön Alloys AB, Sumitomo SHI FW, CELSA GROUP, and Bright Renewables. Over the next 4.5 years, CO₂ Value Europe will be a proud member of the EMPHATICAL consortium by leading its communication and dissemination. This initiative marks a significant step forward in transforming CO₂ emissions into valuable products, helping the metallurgical industry meet its sustainability goals.
