Dear CO₂ Value Europe members and followers,   As 2024 comes to a close and we prepare for the winter break, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our progress in advancing Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) in Europe and beyond. In a world focused on cost-effective climate change solutions, our efforts are more relevant than ever. This year, we’ve reached significant milestones in CCU technologies, research, and policy. From groundbreaking advancements in turning CO₂ into valuable products to the collaborative work of our members and Scientific Advisory Committee driving policy and research, the momentum for CCU is undeniable despite the challenges. In early 2024, we published our first quantitative assessment of the CCU’s contribution to climate neutrality in the EU, highlighting its potential as a climate-mitigating solution. The European Commission recommended ambitious 2040 climate targets, and the Industrial Carbon Management Strategy gave a first quantification of CCU volumes needed in 2040 and 2050. The Net Zero Industry Act also put forward CO₂ utilisation and CCU fuels as net zero technologies. The new EU elections brought shifts in the European Parliament but Ursula von der Leyen committed to the objectives of the Green Deal upon reelection. We now also focus on the Clean Industrial Deal’s potential impact on CCU projects in the coming years. The Innovation Fund calls launched in December present fresh opportunities for our members to accelerate defossilisation projects. These include new targets for net-zero technologies and renewable hydrogen production through the European Hydrogen Bank auction. These accomplishments, highlighted by our growth to 31 new members, are a clear demonstration of the dedication and collective commitment of our community, united by a shared vision. As we take a well-deserved holiday break, let’s reflect on our progress, recharge for 2025, and reaffirm our shared goal of mitigating climate change. We wish you a restful and joyful holiday season and thank you for being an essential part of this journey. Warm regards, The CO₂ Value Europe Secretariat Find our newsletter at https://bit.ly/4gAjEgL.

  • CCU POLICY | Our Recommendations for an Ambitious Clean Industrial Deal The new European Commission announced the launch of the Clean Industrial Deal within its first 100 days, a landmark policy package that will set the priorities at the EU level for the 5 next years. It is expected to accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy and strengthen industrial competitiveness. As a representative of the Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) community in Europe, CO₂ Value Europe urges policymakers to ensure the Clean Industrial Deal addresses two key needs: 🔵 Ambitious policies for a clear shift away from fossil fuels. 🔵 Legislation that supports the deployment of cleantech projects. Despite progress in net-zero technologies, cleantech projects are not scaling as quickly as needed. Our recent quantitative assessment (https://t.ly/s9nLa) shows that CCU plays a critical role to reach climate goals by substituting fossil feedstocks for sustainable alternatives in valuable products like synthetic fuels, chemicals, and construction materials. Through the Clean Industrial Deal, we urge the new Commission to recalibrate policies to position Europe as a global leader in environmental innovation while enhancing its industrial competitiveness: 🔵 Include CCU in the Clean Industrial Deal and all incoming legislation as a pathway to decrease emissions in Europe. 🔵 Accelerate the support to CO₂ mineralisation projects through certification. 🔵 Take stock of progress and hurdles for CCU fuels production. Introduce legal obligations to use alternative carbon feedstocks in chemicals, packaging, textiles, or cosmetics. 🔵 Continue to increase investments in CCU research and innovation. As the CCU community, we see the Clean Industrial Deal as a key opportunity to align climate goals with the necessary rules for industry defossilisation to drive a fossil-free market ramp up. Our 7 policy recommendations (https://t.ly/xFzNi) outline how to unlock CCU's full potential.
