We are excited to share our latest publication titled "Board Responsibility for Irresponsibility: The Link Between Board Structure and Corporate Scandals." It took us quite a while, but finally we could publish the paper in the Schmalenbach Journal of Business Research. In this paper, Dr. Christian Kreuzer and I analyze an international dataset of over 6,100 companies across 44 countries from 2002–2018 to explore the relationship between board structures and corporate scandals. Our findings reveal some intriguing insights: Positively associated with scandals are: High CSR efforts Busy board members Negatively associated with scandals are: Qualified and skilled boards Interestingly, no clear evidence was found concerning the impact of gender diversity, independent board members, and board size on corporate scandals. Tanja Kewes and Handelsblatt reporting today on our 2024 analysis of German DAX Supervisory Boards. The 14th edition of this study by Russell Reynolds Associates shows that while in its first year female representation was at 7% now 40% have been achieved. It goes without saying that an ideal board composition needs to take many other aspects into account, but all considered, DAX Supervisory Boards improved over the years - still leaving some potential to be unlocked.

Striking the (reporting) balance Today, at the Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft e.V. Tagung I had the pleasure of participating in a panel discussion about sustainability reporting and related developments from a political, regulatory and capital market perspective. In the vivid exchange with Alfred Wagenhofer , Kerstin Lopatta , Jenny Bofinger-Schuster , Sven Gentner and Stefan Asenkerschbaumer I had the opportunity to share some thoughts (details in the attached presentation, though in the conference language German): 1) Regulatory sustainability reporting is still having only a limited real world impact, given the lack of comparability within and across sectors and the required granularity of data. Complexity and costs for preparers are substantial. 2) Direct political action can have an more immediate effect on ESG matters. 3) Overlapping regulation on European and International level could lead to even higher efforts in sustainability reporting. In other areas like accounting, taxes or regulatory reporting we already face significant overlaps and multiple reporting. My dream would be one concise, internationally aligned and consistent set of reporting standards, allowing us to enjoy maximum positive impact with minimum bureauocracy costs. I took a 2 month #parentalleave as a Partner at Roland Berger to take care of my son and spend more time with my wife. Are are my 5 learnings and recommendations how to make it happen: 1. #Enjoy the moment: Just be there for your family, don't overload the time with special activities every day. Go out in the forest, swimming or go to the playground brings a lot of joy 2. Align timing with #business cycle: Put the leave ideally in the summer months of July and August or whatever time is best for your industry 3. #Delegate all tasks and enable the next leadership generation: Don't think that you are irreplaceable, instead try to hand over all responsibilities, potentially except for having a look at your direct reports from time to time 4. Spend time with your #partner: Do things you did not manage to do in the last months such as a romantic dinner or going to the cinema while your kid is in daycare or relatives have a look 5. Do a private #project: My wife and I build a gigantic mud kitchen for our son and I trief to swim every day for 1h while he was sleeping You could also reconsider if a formal parental leave, i.e. being 100% out is right or if you want to move to a 80 or 90% contract with 2 or 3 months vacation in a year but more flexibility. And finally: Just do it. The time with your kid never comes back.
