How (well) the Corporate Climate Policy Engagement Leaders - as identified by InfluenceMap - performed with respect to Corporate Emissions and the Use of Carbon Credits ( as explored by MSCI Carbon Markets). A causality /correlation question to anyone interested and to the authors of two great studies published today by InfluenceMap * & MSCI **. I think we must be genuinely interested not only in whether companies have used carbon credits as an alternative to investing in climate-mitigation activities within their businesses ( spoiler: MSCI is the latest to find that this assumption / accusation is fortunately not valid!), but also seeking the relationship between emissions trajectories & public policy stewardship. I assume that there is a strong causality between emission trajectories & positive policy engagement. However, I can only guess that 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲/𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐬 & 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 ( e.g. those 40 companies on the top of the InfluenceMap list). I guess that such analysis is not rocket science based on Science Based Targets initiative, CDP, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), MSCI Inc., InfluenceMap, World Benchmarking Alliance etc data & information. The relevant commission of the Swiss National Council has today decided not to pursue a simple, fair, and effective emission pricing solution - based on two weird reasons. As per the relevant press release (currently only available in German and French, https://lnkd.in/dFWfkFtM): 1. A majority of voters would not support a 'systemic change in climate policy'. But: They have no clue if that is the case. It has not been tested. And given that some 70% of the population (incl. all the lower income groups) would experience a net financial gain, IMHO it is quite likely that a well run, well communicated campaign will indeed gain majority support. 2. A 'strict enforcement of the polluter pays principles would also lead to competitive disadvantages'. What? That a worry for Switzerland, a service-based economy, one of the richest in the world, blessed by carbon-free hydro power and a long standing global leadership in both GDP and innovation per capita? Isn't the point of pricing pollution to hurt the competitiveness of polluters? Yep, they are out there, so obviously not everyone will come out ahead?! The good news: Today's decision has been tight (12 votes opposing, 11 supporting, with 2 abstentions). The thing to do now is to look ahead and keep fighting. Starting point for that is December 12 in Geneva, when we will hold a roundtable event on how to get the right pricing policy implemented. It is held as part of the Building Bridges conference. Registration is free for conference attendees, but by invitation only. Those interested to attend may contact my colleague Juan, using the detail listed on the program.

The increase in atmospheric CO2 levels have lead to the urgency in acting upon solutions for climate action. With the CO2 emissions being at all time high in the year 2023, a list of industries and countries have their fair share of responsibility over it. Although the 1.5C threshold is keeping the Carbon Budget in check, the natural assets of carbon offsetting and management are also depleting gradually. We identify blockchain-based carbon management platforms to be the future of operational efficiency and mitigating climate impact by corporate giants. The 60th Sessions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Bodies—SB60 (also called the 2024 Bonn Climate Change Conference) 3 to 13 June 2024 The High-Level Champions for Climate Action have recently set out an ambitious agenda for COP29 during the Bonn Climate Change Conference. Held in Bonn, Germany, this event focused on scaling up global efforts to address climate change, emphasizing the urgent need for greater action beyond current policies. Key issues on the agenda include climate finance, advancing progress on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), timely submission of countries’ first Biennial Transparency Reports, work on National Adaptation Plans, and accelerating climate action through a just transition. One of the primary goals is to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, a theme that has been underscored since COP28. This involves not only setting more ambitious emission reduction targets but also ensuring the effective and equitable implementation of the newly established loss and damage fund, which is designed to help vulnerable countries cope with the impacts of climate change​. The agenda also highlights the importance of inclusive engagement. Greater involvement of youth, Indigenous peoples, people living with disabilities, and frontline communities in the climate dialogue is crucial. These groups often bear the brunt of climate impacts, and their participation is essential for equitable and comprehensive climate action. Additionally, the agenda emphasizes the Global Stocktake process, a mechanism under the Paris Agreement for assessing collective progress towards climate goals. The Bonn conference serves as a key milestone in this process, offering an opportunity to review progress and prepare for the final political phase at COP29. This involves assessing gaps in current climate actions and enhancing support and finance for mitigation and adaptation efforts. Therefore, we all need to push for a zero-carbon, resilient world by fostering unprecedented collaboration among various stakeholders, including cities, businesses, regions, and investors. The call for urgent, collective action moves beyond mere pledges, advocating for concrete, actionable plans to address climate change's immediate and long-term threats. As the world prepares for COP29, the agenda set in Bonn serves as a crucial roadmap for each country for accelerating global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate impacts, ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for all​. How does the #CBAM scrap loophole threaten the backbone of EU #climatepolicy? 🌍 Sandbag’s Adrien Assous was on FORESIGHT Climate & Energy’s The Jolt podcast to explain what the scrap loophole is and its potential impact on the EU’s climate commitments. 🎙️ The podcast’s host, Sam Morgan, describes the CBAM as a powerful #EU climate trade policy. It puts a carbon cost on imports while the EU gradually stops handing out free emission permits to its own plants, making sure that both EU and non-EU producers face similar costs on carbon emissions. Currently, it is in a transitional phase – focused on collecting and reporting data - The CBAM is set to be fully deployed in 2026. However, a significant loophole has been identified: imported steel and aluminium scrap is exempt from CBAM charges. In the podcast, Adrien explains the potential consequences: “This #scraploophole poses an existential threat to the CBAM. If these products go through unchecked, it undermines the fundamental role of the CBAM, which is to phase out free allocation within the #EUETS. Big week for global carbon markets! The Article 6.4 Supervisory Body approved and released the: ▶️ Standard for Development and Assessment of Article 6.4 Mechanism Methodologies (the rules for how methodologies are designed and evaluated) ▶️ Standard Requirements for Removals Under the Article 6.4 Mechanism (how removals will be treated and accounted for from all anthropogenic removals of emissions) ▶️ Tool for Sustainable Development impact assessment, which is mandatory for all Article 6.4 activities (how to assess the sustainable development impact of Article 6.4 activities) As a reminder, Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement establishes a centralized UNFCCC administered offset mechanism, which is what these rules pertain to. Article 6.2 addresses "cooperative approaches" between and among countries not routed through a centralized UN approval process and Article 6.8 addresses "non market based approaches". This important set of decisions lays a strong foundation for a robust future global carbon market operating at scale and reflects important learnings from the first iterations of these rules under the Kyoto Protocol. The guidance largely tracks to the requirements of the The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) Assessment Framework and further indicates a drive towards a higher integrity, global benchmark and interoperable carbon market. Huge congrats to the friends who have been toiling away on this for the last nearly 10 years!! This is a major milestone and a sensible and robust set of standards to build the next generation of global carbon markets from.
