🏥 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭 (𝐊𝐇𝐙𝐆) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬?  The Hospital Future Act (KHZG), in force since 2021, is a government-funded "digital update" initiative aimed at modernizing German hospitals with a substantial budget of €3 billion. The goal is to enhance digital infrastructure, IT security, and emergency capacity in hospitals across Germany. 🎯𝐎𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: The aim is to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare through modernization and digital transformation. 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: Hospitals that identified a need for funding in the areas of digital infrastructure, IT security, and emergency capacity could apply for it during 2021 and receive funds. More than 15% of the funding must be allocated to IT security measures, with additional funding directed towards digital infrastructure and emergency capacity, such as digital admission and discharge management or medication management. 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The evaluation of the level of digitalization in hospitals by the authorities was conducted on 30 June 2024. In addition to assessing the level of digitalization, it is essential to evaluate other outcomes as well, such as the impact on healthcare costs, innovation promotion, and employment growth. Software providers are planning drastic changes to their licensing models that will lead to significant cost increases for healthcare organizations. 🌟 FMH Report on Digital Health Applications 🌟 We are excited to share the latest report from FMH Verbindung Schweizer Ärztinnen und Ärzte on digital health applications (DGA)! 🎉 Our CEO and founder, Florence von Gunten, has also contributed valuable insights to the success of the report. 🔍 A few interesting facts from the report: 🤳 Wide application of DGAs: Digital health applications support both medical professionals and patients in the prevention, monitoring, and treatment of diseases. They offer standalone alternatives or complements to pharmacological interventions.  🌱 Psychotherapy apps: Combine personal sessions with online therapy activities, including psychological questionnaires and personalized interventions. This includes YLAH with its blended psychotherapy software.  📒 Interactive programs for depression: Self-help programs with therapeutic conversations and mood diaries.  💵 Reimbursement of DGAs: In Switzerland, the reimbursement of DGAs is integrated into existing models, particularly through mandatory health insurance (OKP) and supplementary insurance. However, the currently available tariff positions inadequately cover digital services.  Another challenging aspect is the reimbursement under the principle of trust (i.e., it is assumed that doctors use services that meet the legal requirements of efficacy, appropriateness, and cost-effectiveness and can therefore be reimbursed by the OKP), which often involves significant administrative effort.    YLAH actively advocates for the development and integration of digital health applications. Have you ever wondered what would happen if power grids, transport or the healthcare system suddenly came to a standstill? 📡⚡🚑 These sectors are part of what is known as critical infrastructure, or KRITIS (short for ‘kritische Infrastruktur’ in German). They are essential for the functioning of our society and their security must therefore be particularly protected. 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥: 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦❓ The prognosis for German healthcare is clear: aging populations, the upcoming chronic disease epidemic, rural care deserts, a shortage of skilled professionals, and a digital deficit demand urgent attention. But can digital health solutions deliver the expected relief? Patient-centric innovations hold the key: telemedicine, mHealth, eRecords, and ePrescriptions promise faster care, smarter diagnostics, and enhanced access, improving patient experiences along all stages of the patient journey. Yet, Germany lags behind in digital readiness, ranking second last (out of 17) at the Digital Health Index – despite large investments that are provided by the German government only for the digitalization of the healthcare system (e.g., €4.3 bn for the “KHZG”). 📃Scientific paper: Erste Daten aus einer digitalen Gesundheits-App für Erektionsstörungen Abstract: Purpose In a systematic data analysis, we evaluated the influence of a digital health app on erection scores as well as life quality and patient activation in a group of patients with erectile dysfunction. Methods In all, 44 participants took part in an evidence-based program for patients with erectile dysfunction. The in app 12-week program included pelvic floor exercises and physiotherapeutic and cardiovascular training. In addition, there where sessions on mindfulness and sexual therapy as well as useful information about erectile dysfunction and its causes, nutrition, and risk factors. The median age was 46 years (19–75 years). All patients answered IIEF‑5, PAM-13 and QoL-Med questionnaires at the beginning and the end of the program. A total of 27 questionnaires could be evaluated at both times. Results The average improvement in IIEF‑5 score was 4.5 points ( p  < 0.0001). 96% of patients showed overall improvement of erection scores. Improvement in life quality was shown in 93% of participants. Moreover, there was a significant increase in patient activation scores. Conclusion We were able to show that a multimodal digital app for self-management of erectile dysfunction improved not only erection scores but also life quality and patient activation. We concluded that it is possible to reproduce results of analog studies in a digital setting. 🌍 BioTechX Europe Congress 2024 - A Glimpse into the Future of Clinical Development 🌱 The past two days at the BioTechX Europe Congress in Basel were truly inspiring. The event was excellently organized, with many vendors showcasing innovative HealthCare AI products. Major pharmaceutical companies presented their achievements, but one recurring theme still persists: the enormous development costs. During the panel discussion, "Driving Clinical Development for Affordable Care," chaired by Thorsten Alexander Rall (Capgemini), Sam Khalil, PhD (Novo Nordisk), Robert McGregor Novartis, and Alexander Krupp shared their insights. A striking moment was when Alexander mentioned that AI could reduce development costs by up to a thousandfold if applied correctly. This caught my attention – why are we not fully leveraging this potential? Companies like Insilico Trials (and others) have been developing technologies for years that dramatically accelerate drug development, reduce animal testing, and significantly cut R&D costs. Around five years ago, efforts were made to engage big pharma companies in exploring these opportunities, but perhaps the timing wasn’t right back then Now, after two days in Basel, I wonder if the industry is really moving forward. It seems possible that, in one to three years, we may still be asking why these development costs remain so high. What is the biggest barrier? I often hear the answer: data structure. Yet, there are already promising research-innovations (outside of Europe), such as Xenobots – synthetic organisms with living bodies and AI-driven brains. Although still in their infancy, these technologies could be groundbreaking in the future, not only in medicine but also in environmental protection and beyond. Yes, ethical considerations are certainly a must-have conversation, but we should not always impose barriers and rules on ourselves when it comes to fostering and advancing true, pioneering innovations Let’s make sure these two days in Basel are not just remembered as another great event. It’s time to move beyond just talking about broken data structures and start crafting a real vision for medical innovation. The opportunities are "almost" here; we just need to seize them. 💡 I’m curious to see if, in three years, we will look back on this discussion and say that we’ve taken the right steps forward.
