Did you know that Agile change or change towards it or Agile transformation fails because Agile is simply not understood deep enough. If we look at Agile from the surface (Agile manifesto) - it is like looking at titles. Or if we attend surface level Agile trainings and play games - it is the same. Here's a deeper look at what's beneath: https://lnkd.in/dBGE8UAJ In very short summary - it's about people to whom others report to and how they determine THE PLACE and THE WAY. Check yourselves and share your thoughts 😎

"Story points are crap! Stakeholders want hours, days and dates!" Do you hear that sometimes when you propose estimating in story points or t-shirt sizes? Some managers misunderstand story point (SP) estimates as a simple kinda esoteric layer to disguise real person hour estimates. This often ends in them establishing a fixed "exchange rate" between SP and person hours. But that completely misses the point of story points and relative estimation! Yet, stakeholders are right to demand specific date ranges instead of abstract SP. They need something to plan with. And the bridge between abstract story points and specific date ranges is the concept of 👉 VELOCITY Understanding velocity lets agile teams make pretty precise predictions of when stakeholders can expect to get certain features. I explain the concept and quirks of velocity in this article in the Agile Compass: https://lnkd.in/ekzHibJQ #agile #velocity #productmanagement

Did you hear them say: "Agile teams cannot keep deadlines"? It's a common misunderstanding of agile methods. In fact, agile methods are better at keeping deadlines than traditional methods! 👇 This article explains how to deliver on time with agile methods https://lnkd.in/ehnGycDU #agile #deadline

3 Shocking Reasons Why Agile Coaching Isn't Just for Experts When: 24th July 12noon ACST Where: Agility@Scale Podcast https://lnkd.in/gYanRcun Who: Bob Galen Why: Some perspectives imply Agile Coaching is for a small set of specialized agilists who serve to improve everyone else. Or that it’s a unique role that others, including managers, Scrum Masters, and leaders, will find challenging to master. This event intends to debunk those notions. Bob Galen subscribes to several generic notions in agile contexts. One is that everyone has leadership potential and can rise to be a leader. The other is that everyone is a coach, can coach, and has a foundational responsibility to coach, regardless of their role. The only questions are will, skill, and experience. In this talk, Bob will explore the nuance associated with agile coaching to demystify it and encourage you to find your inner agile coach in whatever role you currently hold. He’ll share and explore the Agile Coaching Growth Wheel as a competency model for agile coaching. Next, he'll explore the critical aspects of an agile coaching mindset. Finally, he’ll give you a chance to practice having a coaching conversation. Bob hopes to inspire you so your inner Agile Coach emerges, grows, and shines. #NeuroAdaptability #ScrumCraft #neuroagility #theagilestoic #dontbeadick #agile #scrum #agilecoaching #agiletransformation

➡️Plenary sessions in SAFe PI Planning - Cut them short!⬅️ I think there is a lot of value in SAFe. But there are a couple of examples where SAFe and I don't see eye to eye, or anti-patterns I discovered over the years. An example is the default agenda SAFe proposes for the PI Planning. Take a look at https://lnkd.in/eCEjmFXz. Notice the plenary sessions at the start of day 1. They last the entire morning! And then we have lunch... So by the time the teams get to work all energy is gone. My advice: cut them short. Business context: 15 minutes max. Vision and features discussion: about 20-30 minutes. Make sure you communicate maximum time to the speakers. Give them cues during their presentation, and be strict in the time-box. And while you are at it: check the presentation of the high-ranking manager that is supposed to give a motivational speech at the start of the day. Despite good intentions they might surprise you and say exactly the wrong thing. I still remember the time a manager said: "Last PI Planning was learning. This time I expect the plan to be perfect!" Or come up with a more creative way that replaces traditional slide decks. I remember one example where Product Owners pitched the features to all participants in an area in the room labeled the 𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘪𝘵. It took a little longer but was much more engaging. #Scaledagileframework #Agile

Aligning Behaviors with Values & Beliefs in Agile In Agile, values and beliefs aren’t just words on a poster—they should be reflected in our daily behaviors. For an Agile team to truly thrive, our actions must align with the core principles we stand by. Here’s why: 🔑 1. Integrity Builds Trust When we act in accordance with Agile values like transparency, collaboration, and respect, we build trust within our teams and with stakeholders. Trust is the foundation of any high-performing Agile team. 🚀 2. Consistency Drives Culture Our behaviors set the tone for team culture. If we believe in continuous improvement, we need to be consistently seeking feedback, reflecting, and experimenting. When teams see leaders modeling Agile values, it reinforces those behaviors across the board. 🔄 3. Value Delivery is Key Agile is all about delivering value early and often. To do this, we must stay aligned with customer needs and continuously prioritize work that delivers meaningful outcomes. Actions like regular prioritization, continuous feedback loops, and incremental delivery keep us aligned with the core belief that delivering value matters most. 💬 4. Collaboration Over Hierarchy If we value collaboration, we need to foster an environment where every voice is heard, and silos are broken down. Our behaviors—whether in how we facilitate meetings, manage conflict, or encourage idea-sharing—should reinforce the belief that great ideas come from everywhere. At the end of the day, Agile is more than a methodology—it’s a mindset. When our daily actions reflect the values and beliefs we hold, we not only grow as individuals but also empower our teams to reach their full potential. #AgileMindset #ValuesDrivenLeadership #AgileCulture #ContinuousImprovement #Collaboration

💡 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 What does it take to turn a product vision into tangible, measurable value? According to Eric Naiburg in Agile Bulletin 2024, great Product Ownership is not a solo act—it’s a 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵. Effective Product Ownership requires a distinct set of capabilities and skills, fulfilled by multiple people, roles, or functions. Agile Employee Survey Methods (1): Anne M. Schüller introduces a series of quick, open, and agile survey tools. Today: The Question of Conscience. * Employees will only share their thoughts if they believe that they will be appreciated. Involvement activities can therefore only bear rich fruit where there is the right breeding ground. * One of the most productive agile employee survey methods in this context is the “question of conscience”, which goes like this: "Imagine you were our corporate conscience. What would you tell us? What is going great? What could we do better in concrete terms? And what do we need to change as quickly as possible?" * Important: Give plenty of space to fill in. Unvarnished answers can reveal a lot of things you’ve always wanted to know. Perhaps the superiors will finally find out what everyone but them already knows due to rumors and what the real reasons for persistent problems are. * Following such a survey, suitable suggestions for improvement are worked out by the employees themselves and implemented immediately afterwards. * This is never about wallowing in grievances and looking for scapegoats, but always about how any shortcomings can be quickly and constructively eliminated. Read more in the article: https://lnkd.in/eBc-xyNH #QuestionofConscience #EmployeeSurveyMethods #EmployeeSurveys

Fair to say the majority of scrum masters haven't been the enablers and positive disrupters they should be. Sure, they do a solid days work running* scrum teams (* deliberate word), mentoring, training, but en-masse don't transform their organisations. As always, products and projects come and go, things change, improve, fall back. But the Scrum Master here is largely incidental. Equilibrium's more or less maintained. Looking globally, that's the Scrum Master product a couple of million CSM / PSM1 certificants (if that much) have put out there. As a product it's been on the shelves for a while and the market is - some might say finally - responding. Maybe it's an over correction, we'll see. Apparently BANI is the new VUCA. Brittle, anxious, non-linear, incomprehensible... sounds about right to me. And I see a theme running through that acronym: 'fear.' - triggering a need for safety, that could manifest as the opposite of disruption, autonomy, experimentation .... instead, hunker down and hope it passes. Like in Don't Look Up. Some organisations will embrace this, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot don't right now. A minority of scrum masters know the potential power of the role and understand some of what's needed to get there. Of those, some will hit the hard walls of resistance in their organisation and some will hit their own boundaries of what they are able or prepared to do themselves. Others - probably a minority of this minority - will be 'successful' in the way it's being referred to here. Like Geoff Watts and the Pathway Guides at AMI, I believe in the attributes described in the article, and that they will add significant business value (not just financial) to an organisation. Amongst several, I do see two challenges right now. (i) Under these BANI conditions, how to reach the business leaders who might be taking refuge in the status quo, with news about what the Scrum Master product really is, and why they might need it. Yes, you who's just de-hired all your Scrum masters....hmm. and (ii) when they're listening - making proper sure to deliver on it. Surely anyone now taking a Scrum Master role has a bigger obligation to the profession to be a great one. For me, I'm not sure if a recovery plan - as in something that will reverse the current trajectory of the Scrum Master - is the obvious thing. The experiences of the majority are pushing it this way now, so maybe we need to yield and then side-step, coming back with something better. An evolution plan ? Whatever it is, I think it will evolve forwards rather than backwards. At the heart of it, a prominent display of the value brought and a focus on the USPs mentioned: push past reticence, speak truth to power, resilience etc. Ultimately whether these reside in what we currently know as Scrum Masters, or in another job, I think matters less than that they occur. (done as a re-post to beat the reply character limit. sorry if it's a bit long)
