Germany and Deep Tech: A Future-Defining Opportunity The Zukunftsstudie IX by MÜNCHNER KREIS e.V. highlights the transformative potential of Deep Tech to boost Germany's innovation capacity, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty. But success won’t happen automatically. For Deep Tech to transition from research to real-world application, we need: 👉 Companies willing to make long-term investments 👉 Research institutions that professionalize knowledge transfer 👉 Policymakers who create agile frameworks 👉 Stronger collaboration in innovation ecosystems, especially for SMEs and start-ups 👉 Investors ready to back groundbreaking technologies Where do we stand – and what is SAP doing? A key finding of the study: Turning research into commercial applications remains a significant challenge. This is exactly where we as SAP play a crucial role. As a global leader in enterprise software with over 50 years of experience, SAP is dedicated to driving innovation by bridging the gap between academic research and practical, commercially viable business solutions. Since 2019, we have been working closely with the Technische Universität München on deep tech topics such as different aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. For example, we have been working together on cutting-edge topics such as Generative AI, Deep Reinforcement Learning, Probabilistic Programming, and Explainable AI. By co-innovating and integrating these pioneering technologies into SAP solutions, we enable start-ups to test and scale their innovations in real-world business environments. This ensures that our customers benefit from forward-looking, practical solutions. This collaboration highlights our commitment to turning research results into actionable value for industries worldwide. The release of this study is a key highlight of the Münchner Kreis' 50th anniversary, where I am proud to serve on the board. The study underscores the value of the Münchner Kreis' work and why it is my mission to provide as many people as possible with access to this network to benefit from its insights and recommendations — because innovation is a shared responsibility that transcends individual stakeholders. I look forward to your thoughts and ideas! MÜNCHNER KREIS e.V. Michael Dowling Helmut Krcmar Dr. Rahild Neuburger Dr. Katharina Wollenberg Michael Wittmann Dr. Leonard Przybilla

Normally, I post about all facets of corporate innovation, but today I'm happy to announce great news from a completely different area: Matthias Anderski, Tim Ströbel from Universität Bayreuth and I just published a paper on #athletebranding in European Sport Management Quarterly! 🥵 Why does this make me feel proud? Because it was such a looong way to the final ‘accept’ and academic researchers may feel with us: ▶️ 2016(!): First idea concept & research question - “How can athletes (mainly from niche sports) can leverage brand building to finance their careers (e.g. via social media)?” ▶️ 2017: First interviews conducted ▶️ 2017: Conference paper with the working title “Athletes as entrepreneurs” ▶️ 2018-2024: Submissions, revision rounds, rejections, another study and almost endless re-writing ▶️2024: Acceptance & publication 💡 The paper adds to our understanding of how athletes position themselves as brands (often called ‘self-marketing’). We found three different athlete types: #brandmanager, #brandsupporter, and #brandantagonist – and they think and act differently with respect to their brand building efforts. It was great working with you guys on this project! #publicationalert #academicresearch #athletes Citation: Panthen, M., Anderski, M., & Ströbel, T. (2024). ‘I wouldn’t call myself a brand, but many people say my name could serve as a brand.’Exploring a conceptualization and typology of athlete brands. European Sport Management Quarterly, 1-22.

The best part of work is always at the terminals. Yesterday at the HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG Container Terminal Tollerort. Supporting the incredible works of founders Marcel Wiegand and Nico Marks and their exciting venture passify that secures and automates gate processes. The roll-out was a blast. Speaking with hundreds of truck drivers all day long and showing them the easiness of the gate process via smartphone App. This is another great example why founders who have years of terminal work experiences make the difference when it comes to gate integration, process knowledge and smooth software roll-outs. And this is just the start. passify simplifies and streamlines the access management process for both truck drivers and facility operators, while providing real-time information on pick-up and delivery availability. Definitely a startup to watch on an exciting growth path. #smartport #terminalaccess #startup #truck #gateprocess

Start-ups in Europe: a light at the end of the tunnel - finally! This article by Nadine Schimroszik in Handelsblatt gives reason for hope for the tech ecosystem, as it summarises a development that has been tentatively emerging for some time: The number of new #start-ups in Germany is growing again, by 17 per cent, as shown by a comparison of the first quarter of 2024 with the same quarter of the previous year. 💡It is particularly interesting to see that most investments are being made in AI. An unmistakable sign that they continue to be a driver of innovation for the German startup ecosystem. We recently came to a similar conclusion with my team, as part of our analysis of the German startup landscape. Our conclusion: more and more funding are being mobilised for ♻️ #Greentech business ideas that are based on AI-based technologies and have a positive impact on our planet. The #ard #documentary „The Autocrats’ Code“ explores how modern autocrats like Putin, Erdoğan, and Xi Jinping consolidate power. Experts from #politicalscience, #datascience, #socialmedia, #marketing and #humanrights where brought together to create an #artificialintelligence that creates a potential successful authoritarian avatar. In my opinion a #mustwatch for understanding how #democracy is being undermined and the role of #AI in that #ethical context; and the warning signs we can’t afford to ignore.

ICYMI ... Maybe something to read this summer: OECD Artificial Intelligence Review of Germany This report provides an international benchmarking of Germany’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem and discusses progress in implementing its national AI strategy. The report draws on quantitative and qualitative data and insights from the OECD.AI Policy Observatory and from the OECD Programme on AI in Work, Innovation, Productivity and Skills (AI-WIPS) – an OECD research programme financed by the German Federal Government – and results from a series of interviews with a wide range of stakeholders in Germany. The review discusses Germany’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges in AI, and provides recommendations to steer AI policy in Germany in the coming years. The evidence is presented according to the core focus areas outlined in Germany’s national AI strategy, which include: 1) minds; 2) research; 3) transfer and applications; 4) the world of work; 5) policy and regulatory frameworks; 6) society. Furthermore, the report discusses AI infrastructure and it includes three sector spotlights on AI in the public sector, AI and environmental sustainability and AI and healthcare. "Space travel is far more than just the pursuit of stars and planets - it is a driving force behind technological innovations that are revolutionising our daily lives." Can rarely put in words how deeply I embrace this strong statement by Matthias 👍 Our friends from Helios paradigmatically stand for this. By developing efficient methods to extract oxygen from the lunar soil they discovered a novel method to produce green iron (and other metals) very energy/cost-efficiently, opening a great potential for the steel industry to decarbonize their value chain without any "green premium". To make just one amendment: In the long run, the survival of all life on our home planet depends on our will and capabilities to become a star-faring civilization. As "four billion years from now, the increase in Earth's surface temperature will cause a runaway greenhouse effect, (...) heating Earth's surface enough to melt it. By that point, all life on Earth will be extinct." Those wo care about environment and sustainability can't seriously be against space travel. When you look at the broader picture. In this sense: 🖖 https://lnkd.in/dCQ9CRaD

🔹 🔷 🔹 Can Industrial AI be a cure against the gradual deindustrialization of Germany? 🔹 🔷 🔹 The Pioneer, one of the leading German political and economic media, has released an article I wrote about the potential impact of Industrial AI yesterday. Germany with its rich tradition in engineering and industrial solutions is well placed to leverage AI to fuel the next wave of industrial innovation. A race that is still not run - as opposed to GenAI that is dominated by the large US tech giants and LLMs that are already commoditizing. A race that will likely leave room for several new German unicorns that can add to the industrial innovation process - ideally in a cooperation with established industrial players such as BMW, Mercedes, Siemens or Bosch. But it will require a significantly better availability of venture capital all the way from inception to a profitable business as well as a targeted industrial development policy to leverage this opportunity. Time for the industrial giant Germany to shed the sluggishness of recent years and remember the entrepreneurial spirit of its industrial forefathers such as Benz, Siemens, Bosch, Zeiss or Bayer. For those interested to read a little more - you can find the article on The Pioneer here (in German - have Google translate it for an English version): https://lnkd.in/eW9FWnzA (For those of you that do not yet have access to The Pioneer here is pdf-link: https://lnkd.in/er4_mVrV)

Technologies such as AI have no value, unless we come up with a clear vision what to do with them! 🤔 Thank you Martin Szelgrad for inviting me to take part in a group discussion at Austrian Federal Computing Centre about the role of AI in the Austrian and European economy. And thanks for featuring my statement in the latest edition of the Report Verlag magazine! 🚀 I highlighted 2 things during this discussion: 👉 We need to build up our own expertise in Europe and we need to do it quickly. A great opportunity is to link AI to areas where we have already a leading position, such as tourism in Austria. Österreich Werbung / Austria Tourism is already taking big steps in this direction. AI Hubs where we proactively advance our own developments in a collaborative approach will accelerate the process. 👉 A clear vision is what we would like to achieve is essential. Where are we headed? The vision motivates all players to contribute and more importantly to stay here and strengthen our economy rather than moving abroad. What can we do to accelerate to speed up the uptake of AI in Austria and Europe? Thanks for an inspiring discussion! 🏁💥 How can we keep European companies competitive while watching countries like Germany fall behind in innovation rankings? A recent Handelsblatt article by Thomas Jahn and Nadine Schimroszik uncovers what’s behind the innovation ranking produced by the Federation of German Industries (BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V.) and Roland Berger, where Germany has moved down to 12th place out of a total of 35 selected countries. 🤝 Earlybird Co-Founder & Partner Dr. Hendrik Brandis comments “As a business location, we should aspire to commercialize deep tech technologies here in the long term. But if companies are faced with a choice of either not finding the necessary follow-up financing or accepting a relocation, the latter will be the preferred option.” This article includes special mentions of Earlybird portfolio companies Isar Aerospace, Marvel Fusion, and Lilium. 🚀 Experts, investors, and entrepreneurs see 4 main measures for Germany to secure a better future. Always asked myself, if I can be happy …always? As an entrepreneur you are in the natural habit of optimizing all aspects of a project so why don’t optimize your life? After many years of learning about what makes us happy, I think it is only a transient state. But maybe we can feel even better … when we are in Flow! Flow is the state of consciousness in which we forget space and time, are maximally happy, motivated and efficient. In this state, we feel our best and achieve the most. What do we need to achieve this flow? Why is it so important for founders and managers? I talk about this in the podcast with editor Elena Todeva Listen in and share your best flow moments. #flow #flowmoment #success #performance #motivation #alignment #leadership #newwork #startup #vc #entrepreneurship

Shaping Europe’s #DeepTech future together! 🌍🤝 One of the highlights at this year’s #FallingWalls Science Summit was our #BCG x SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen Executive Table, bringing together leaders from diverse innovation agencies, corporates, and venture capitalists across Europe. Never before have we gathered such a diverse group to shape our deep tech future. This fruitful discussion marked a powerful step toward a pan-European deep tech strategy, focusing on three crucial changes needed for us to lead in global innovation: ➡ Change scientific dogma: Almost half of the world's PhDs are awarded in Europe, yet success for scientists is still measured mainly by publications. To empower real-world impact, founding a company should be a natural next step post-PhD. Shifting this mindset can inspire a new generation of science-driven entrepreneurs. ➡ Strengthen business transfer: With German universities investing only 0.1% of their budgets into business transfer, we see an urgent need to rethink these priorities. University transfer centers should move from profit centers to service providers, supporting deep tech startups through long-term investment, encouraging both risk-taking and sustainable growth. ➡ Build a shared ecosystem: While Europe has made strides in early-stage funding, there’s a gap in later-stage investments, especially compared to the US. Encouraging companies and governments to become startup clients and fostering venture clienting are essential steps to create a sustainable ecosystem that helps deep tech startups scale effectively. At BCG, we are proud to have collaborated with SPRIN-D to build these bridges and foster the essential discussions. Thank you to all participants for joining the table and exchanging your ideas. #Innovation Markus Lorenz Rafael Laguna de la Vera Antonia Jenkinson, ACCA, FCSI Anna Bergstrand António Grilo
