15-Year Reunion of the First BWL Bachelor Cohort 🏰   This past Saturday, nearly 60 alumni of Mannheim University’s first Bachelor in Business Administration cohort reunited to celebrate 15 years since graduation! 🥳 The alumni were welcomed with speeches by Dean Joachim Lutz and Prof. Dr. Christoph Spengel, followed by food, drinks and conversations. Dr. Ingo Bayer guided the group through the 2017 newly built MBS Study & Conference Center. Special thanks to Simone Steurer, Urs S. und Roman Goldner who initiated this special reunion! Translating Research into Real-World Impact 🌍📊 At the University of Mannheim, we pride ourselves on bridging the gap between academia and industry. A perfect example of this is the work of Prof. Dr. Florian Stahl, Chair of Quantitative Marketing, whose expertise in surge pricing was recently quoted in The Guardian. As he explains, surge pricing, or dynamic pricing, is not just a passing trend—it's a fundamental shift in how businesses respond to demand fluctuations. From ride-hailing services like Uber to hospitality and entertainment sectors, more and more industries are exploring dynamic pricing to optimize their revenues and manage supply and demand. By leveraging the latest in machine learning and data analytics, dynamic pricing is being implemented in real-time to adjust costs based on peak demand. We’ve already seen this in industries such as airlines, hotels, and even the hospitality sector, and it's expected to expand into areas like energy and utilities. 👏 We look back at a successful Conference 2024 of the Mannheim Institute for Financial Education (MIFE) (Universität Mannheim & ZEW – Leibniz-Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung)! 🏆 The grand finale was the awarding of the Deutsche Bundesbank Early Career Research Prize on Financial Literacy by Patricia Staab (Deutsche Bundesbank). 🤝 Congratulations to the two winners: 🏅 Lovisa R. with a paper titled “Beyond Groceries: Financial Confidence and the Gender Gap in Inflation Expectations” and 🏅 David Westerheide with a paper titled “Child Penalties in Personal Finances: Evidence from Bank Data“ 🔑 For their inspiring inputs, the MIFE thanks all 3 keynote speakers: Andrea Grifoni (OECD - OCDE), Carly Urban (Montana State University-Bozeman), and Carlo Di Chiacchio (INVALSI). 💬 Afterwards, a fruitful panel discussion followed on “Strategy and Standards for Financial Education“ Andrea Grifoni (OECD - OCDE), Vanessa Müden (Bundesministerium der Finanzen), Alexander Renner (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung), Manuel Wälti (Schweizerische Nationalbank) and Sebastian Swoboda (Bundesministerium für Finanzen), which was moderated by the two directors of the #MIFE, Carmela Aprea (Universität Mannheim) and Tabea Bucher-Koenen (ZEW - Leibniz-Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung & Universität Mannheim). 🚑 Innovation Meets Emergency Response 🚑 The University of Mannheim is part of the groundbreaking RettungsNetz-5G initiative, funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport. This project explores the transformative potential of 5G technology in medical emergency response, aimed at faster, more accurate, and life-saving interventions across the Rhine-Neckar region. After more than two years, the Mobile Stroke Unit, as key outcome of the project, has been launched. 🎉 Exciting Milestone for M²OLIE Research Campus! 🎉 We’re thrilled to share that the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has officially launched the third funding phase for M²OLIE Research Campus under the esteemed ‘Research Campus – Public-Private Partnership for Innovation’ initiative. Following a rigorous evaluation process—including an on-site visit, a presentation, and a Q&A session—the campus was awarded €10 million in funding for the next five years, beginning November 2024. 🌟 This funding enables Armin Heinzl, Prof. Dr., and his dedicated project group (Mechthild Pieper, Florian Rüffer, and Luis Oberste) at the Institute for Enterprise Systems (InES) to focus on enhancing the patient perspective within the M²OLIE closed-loop process. 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 & 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 - 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐬' 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐲 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐞𝐬 Check out the new working paper No. 158 “Firms’ Willingness to Pay Local Business Tax: The Impact of Trust and Public Goods" by Dr. Henning Giese and Vanessa Heinemann-Heile.    The study shows that firms with higher trust in local governments’ handling of tax revenues and satisfaction with the public goods provided are willing to pay higher local business taxes. However, the effect is concentrated in the provision of public goods of the private sphere of a firm’s decision-makers. They then honed their storytelling skills in an interactive pitch workshop, wrapping up the day with lively connections at a networking dinner. Day two of their first field trip brought inspiration of a different kind—through the Samuel Beckett exhibition and an engaging workshop with actor and director Alex Mello. Beatriz Larouco Maciel Rodrigues is 25 years old, half Brazilian, half Portuguese and grew up in a small town near Rio de Janeiro. After she completed a bachelor’s program in Business Administration, she came to the University of Mannheim to pursue the Mannheim Master in Management (MMM) program. Alongside her studies, she works at UBS in Frankfurt in the field of asset management with a focus on sustainability.
