🇺🇳 Last week, our UNCTAD TrainForTrade 2024 Statistics of International Trade in Services e-learning course came to an end! Delivered to 1,200 statistical data compilers and users from 154 countries, the course brought together professionals from national statistical offices, ministries, port authorities, academia, and the private sector – fostering meaningful dialogue between compilers and users.
⚧️ After the six-week program, 476 participants earned certification, including 46% of women, reflecting their growing presence in leadership and technical roles within trade-related sectors globally. Among them were women from Iran, Algeria, and Pakistan, with particularly low female labor-force participation rates, as well as Somalia, Ethiopia, and Guinea, where systemic barriers, such as FGM and child marriage, often limit women’s access to education.*
📚 The course, grounded in the MSITS 2010 Manual, covered the importance of trade in services statistics, prerequisites for data collection, sources, and methods for compilation (Balance of Payments and Foreign Affiliates Statistics), dissemination, and analysis.
🌍 During my time supporting the course, I contributed by drafting new test questions, which involved rigorous analysis of the course's technical contents and stimulating discussions with my colleague Tomasz Kulaga. I also collaborated with trade experts from the WTO (Shradha Bhatia), UNSD (Vysaul Nyirongo), and UNCTAD (Sanja Blazevic), who addressed participants' questions in both the forums and during the end-of-course webinars. Additionally, I had the privilege of reviewing and selecting 7 compelling case studies submitted by participants to be showcased in the webinars. Below are some of my takeaways from their insightful presentations!
Speakers: Andżelika Kuźnar, Bagaskoro Cahyo Laksono, Sanja Blazevic, Vumile Manzi, João Vitor Cabral De Moraes, Nisan Armand COULIBALY, Manuela Romanne BIABO AYOUMOU, Alexis ATANGANA MEKA
It was a pleasure working with Raquel Cuesta de Andrés, Lili Flour, Dominique Chantrel, Tomasz Kulaga, and Sanja Blazevic on this course delivery. Many thanks to the entire TrainForTrade team for trusting me with this endeavor!
