MDST Chart of the Week: With scheduled container shipping capacity of approximately 4 million TEU calling at the port, Valencia now shares the top spot with Tanger Med as the best-served port in the Mediterranean. This achievement comes as Valencia increased its capacity by 4% compared to last year, while Tanger Med experienced a 7% decline. Tanger Med is not alone in facing a reduction in capacity: Piraeus recorded the steepest percentage drop, with its capacity shrinking by 26%. Double-digit reduction was also experienced by Genoa and Port Said, with both ports expected to see an annual reduction of 14% in the container shipping capacity offered to them. #shipping #maritime #freight #capacity #mediterraneanport
After a steep decline from 2019 to 2022, the global liner shipping network is growing again. In 2024 Q2, 937 ports were connected to at least one regular liner shipping service. This observed rise in the number of active ports was evenly spread across global regions. MDST Chart of the Week: As the Red Sea crisis persists, world regions continue to be served differently by the shipping lines. In November, scheduled deepsea capacity is expected to contract compared to the same period last year for the Gulf & ISC, Europe & Mediterranean, and Australasia & Oceania, with projected declines of approximately 12%, 7% and 4% respectively. In contrast, other global regions are set to see capacity growth. Notably, Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to experience a 15% increase, driven by a higher number of diverted services now calling at ports in the region. #shipping #freight #deepsea #capacity #linerservice
