In his Bachelor’s thesis, Paul Safari examined how athletes often fail to fully utilize wearable tech data to enhance their training. He developed a mobile tool named “RecRef” to tackle this and was honored with a semester award from our Faculty for his insightful work.🏅 “This project highlights how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between data and actionable insights,” he concludes. We are very proud to have such remarkable students at our Faculty! ✨️ Congratulations and all the best for your further studies! "If companies realize that filling vacant positions could be achieved by tapping into the existing underutilized but highly skilled female workforce, there would naturally be more incentives for women and mothers to remain or re-enter the labor market," says Josef Zweimüller, professor of economics at the UZH Department of Economics. Switzerland has made a substantial progress in integrating women into the workforce, but inequalities remain high. Prof. Zweimüller investigates the origins of this gap and the continuing influence of existing norms that are hard to eliminate. He emphasizes that there are also differences within Switzerland. In the German-speaking part, for example, values tend to be more traditional. Read the full article "Closing the Gender Gap: Pathways to Equality" in the new edition of the Oec. “The collaboration between the Robotics and Perception Group at UZH and NASA JPL brings two important innovations to the mission: advanced navigation algorithms and event camera technology,” says group leader Davide Scaramuzza, professor of robotics and perception at the UZH Department of Informatics. At UZH, researchers are developing drone technology to aid the exploration of Mars. The Mars Science Helicopter (MSH) will target previously inaccessible areas, including the towering Valles Marineris canyon, with altitude differences of up to 8,000 metres, and lava tubes that could contain ice, which is crucial for understanding the red planet. “Poverty reduction in particular is an absolute success story that many people are not aware of," says Dina Pomeranz, professor of applied microeconomics at the UZH Department of Economics. As part of an "NZZ Live" panel discussion, Prof. Pomeranz discussed the question "Is the world getting better and we can't see it?". The panel was chaired by Damita Pressl and also featured sabin bieri, Director of the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) at the University of Bern, and Nora Kronig Romero, Director of the Swiss Red Cross. She opened the discussion with an introductory presentation on the topic and the many positive developments in recent decades. Here you can read about the positive changes that have taken place in recent decades, where the trend is negative and why there are no one-size-fits-all solutions to similar problems: https://lnkd.in/etkEaGaw #Inthemedia #oecuzh #universityofzurich #developmentaid #economics #discussion

“Spotify has the power to determine what music we listen to," says Luis Aguiar, professor of digital transformation at the Department of Business Administration. Streaming services like Spotify dominate the music market, with more than 80 per cent of music now consumed through them. Despite this dominance, the range of music available to the public is more diverse than ever. Digital technologies have made it easy and cheap to produce and distribute cultural works such as music, books and videos. This has led to a boom in production, particularly for smaller and independent labels. Their work is often featured on playlists because it costs Spotify less than music from major labels. Nevertheless, the platform remains dependent on major label content to retain its users in the long term. Learn more about how streaming services like Spotify are dominating the Western music market.
