Im Rahmen dieser jährliche Ausgabe, sprach Nobelpreisträger, James J. Heckman, zum Thema “The Economics of Inrequality and Education.” #uzheconomics #pioneeringeconomics #economicresearch #uzh #globalisation University of Zurich UBS Center for Economics in Society UZH Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics

#uzheconomics #pioneeringeconomics #economicresearch #uzh UBS Center for Economics in Society University of Zurich UZH Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics NZZ
RESEARCH SLAM | 🇨🇭 Michael Baltensperger, a PhD student at the Zurich Graduate School of Economics at our department, discussed in a recent talk the economic impact of Switzerland's inter-cantonal tax revenue sharing system. His analysis explores how it influences cantonal tax rates, overall GDP, and the welfare of lower-income households, concluding that while it mitigates tax competition, it raises tax rates and lowers economic output. Michael's presentation was part of the Department of Economics’ Annual Research Night, supported by the Excellence Foundation Zurich. #uzh #pioneeringeconomics #cantonaltax #revenuesharing University of Zurich UZH Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics

5 key lessons on scaling entrepreneurship in organizations The ECONnect event of the UZH Department of Economics at Zunfthaus zur Saffran provided again a treasure trove of insights. Here are 5 key lessons on scaling entrepreneurial ways of working that I took from the Co-founders of Partners Group, Planted and Zahnarztzentrum: >> Incentive structures attract and select certain types of employees Urs Wietlisbach, Co-Founder of Partners Group, explained the approach of the private equity firm when they hire new leadership for the companies they acquire and transform. - They value domain & market expertise, and rigorously staff boards and company leadership with experts from the field in which the company operates (loved to hear it as one of the WOMEN FOR THE BOARD!) - They ask company leadership to have substantial skin in the game: leaders are expected offer up 90% of their own net value as an invest in the company. While that may sound extreme, as a behavioral and neuroeconomist, I found that bit thrilling as it cleverly selects for 3 factors that may help explain investment success: -> It selects for entrepreneurs, i.e. people who are willing to bet their economic livelihood on bringing something to a new level -> It also selects for people who feel a fit with the company -> And it selects for people with deep knowledge of the domain and market, because you wouldn't comfortably make this bet otherwise Quite nicely, it also strongly aligns the interests of the agent (company lead) and principal (investor). >> Incentives should differentiate Sara Hürlimann, Founder of zahnarztzentrum.ch AG, pointed out that incentives should differentiate in at least two ways: - Excellent work should be rewarded with excellent returns - Fix and variable salary components could differ depending on the type of job, there is a rationale for having much higher incentives for people who have leverage in their role to bring a venture substantially forward >> Entrepreneurs are in for the long run It takes years to transform or build a company from scratch. Don't expect payoffs on the order of 1.5-5x the original invest too soon, and find smart ways to keep going so you can reap the reward of hard work over the years. >> A good salary package matters, too Pascal Bieri from Planted noted that younger employees, who came of age in more uncertain times, now show a preference for a good fixum and are less lured by bonus and stock options than in the past decades in the startup world. >> Product development sits at the heart of the business Pascal also reminded us of a core piece of entrepreneurship - that the product development sits at the heart of the business. Planted is a Deep Tech startup that leverages clever machinery to produce nutritious and delightful protein out of few natural ingredients. They take an iterative approach, much like in software engineering. We got to savor Chicken "4.6" that delightfully rounded off the evening at the apero.
