I recently had the honour of being a panelist at the 13th Canadian Summit on Food Regulation, where we explored the complex and often challenging topic of “Navigating the Grey Zone of Claims”. It was an insightful experience to share perspective with industry experts on fostering transparency, compliance, and innovation in food labeling. Some key takeaways from our discussion: - Interpreting Regulations: Applying regulatory guidelines and technical expertise in areas where the rules aren’t entirely clear. - Balancing Compliance and Marketing: Leveraging communication approaches like "No, but" and "Yes, and" to strike a balance between truthful, non-misleading claims and compelling marketing strategies. - Anticipating Regulatory Changes: Preparing for changing regulations while recognizing that "compliance is the integrity” of both product and brand. Special thanks to Lauren Cozens, Kraft Heinz, my fellow panelists, and the event organizers Food Safety & Regulation Canada for creating a platform where we can collectively advance industry standards. It is through these collaborative discussions that we can ensure consumers are well-informed and build trust in our products. I’m excited to continue these conversations and contribute to shaping a more transparent and innovative future for our Industry.

Over the past two days I had the privilege of attending the 13th Annual Canadian Summit on Food Regulation in Toronto. This conference was a great opportunity to network with knowledgeable and prestigious food safety leaders from across Canada. The topics presented at this conference dove deep into various policy frameworks. We engaged in fruitful conversations, some of which included: • How policy and regulation work to increase food safety • The intersection of consumer trends, public health, regulation, and business interests in food innovation • Transitioning to Front of Pack labelling • Allergen management I am eager to share the knowledge and insight that I gained at this conference with my co-workers and others in the industry to promote collaboration and engagement. Food is an essential part of our lives and working towards global harmonization for food regulation is the next step for the future.
