This week, Millani facilitated 4 roundtable discussions in collaboration with CPA Canada and Finance Montréal about the CSSB’s (Canadian Sustainability Standards Board) exposure drafts (CSDS 1 & 2) for the first Canadian sustainability disclosure standards, based on the ISSB’s (International Sustainability Standards Board) IFRS S1 and S2. Feedback from stakeholders is being solicited until June 10, 2024. Even though CSDS 1 and CSDS 2 are in consultation, certain Canadian issuers are already subject to other disclosure requirements. Some of Millani’s clients have already started preparing to meet these requirements. This evolution in disclosure requirements presents a strategic opportunity for issuers. The question of aligning materiality assessments with either IFRS or the CSRD’s ESRS is a false dichotomy. A solution to managing these disclosure requirements is to undertake a double materiality assessment. Thank you to the CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council for your ongoing advocacy and leadership. Unfortunately, our federal political leaders didn't listen to your advice to prioritize the release of a Buy Clean strategy (which they've been working on since 2021) in yesterday's budget. The longer we wait, the less competitive Canadian manufacturers become. I see a glimmer of hope on page 54 of the budget: "In the coming months, the government will engage with housing, construction, and building material sectors, along with labour unions, Indigenous housing experts, and other relevant stakeholders, to co-develop a Canadian industrial strategy for homebuilding. Together, we will explore all essential inputs into building homes in Canada, including raw and manufactured materials, supply chains, and building techniques to ensure that all orders of government and industry can achieve our ultimate goal of building homes smarter, faster, and at prices Canadians can afford." CDP applauds the work of the Canadian Sustainability Standards Board in drafting and proposing for consultation the Canadian Sustainability Disclosure Standards, as it adapts IFRS S1 & S2 to local contexts by bringing under scope key sectors and the inclusion of Indigenous Rights and perspectives.   Once finalized, CSDS 1 and CSDS 2 will constitute voluntary standards in Canada. Of course, Canadian businesses are not solely thinking about preparation for CSSB disclosure but also considering how to satisfy reporting requirements across the world. CDP has been at the forefront of these global alignment efforts – our goal is to ensure that voluntary disclosure remains robust while also easing the reporting burden companies increasingly face. The class brought board and senior-level executives together from Canada, US, Poland, Netherlands, Suriname, Chile, Australia and France who rated the program a high satisfaction score of 6.4 out of 7. The 2024 session has been expanded to incorporate best practices on managing reputation risk and communicating effectively with other stakeholders such as public, government, unions and other important groups. Sustainability reporting in Canada is changing to provide increased transparency and to align with global standards. The Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) has proposed new standards for the coming years. These new standards will align with the global baseline set by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). These new requirements will enhance the clarity and comparability of sustainability disclosures from companies. Requirements for additional data will come into effect over the coming years, eventually requiring data ranging as far as Scope 3 GHG emissions by 2027.
