  • Embodied Carbon in Construction: Policy Primer for Ontario

    Zizzo Strategy

This primer provides an overview of the concept of embodied carbon and describes how life cycle assessment (LCA) can be used to calculate and minimize life cycle GHG impacts from construction projects. It draws on the lessons learned from a recent case study that calculated the embodied carbon of a new commercial building in Toronto and explores how LCA can be applied in Ontario to minimize life cycle GHG impacts from construction projects. It draws on the lessons learned from a recent case study that calculated the embodied carbon of a new commercial building in Toronto and explores how LCA can be applied in Ontario to minimize life cycle GHG impacts from construction projects. The primer combines international best practices and an understanding of Ontario’s specific technical, financial and political context to offer recommended actions that specific stakeholder groups can take to translate lessons learned from LCA research into concrete policy and processes.

Pioneers into Practice is a Climate KIC program which includes two month-long knowledge development and placement programs that brings together professionals from industry, small companies, universities, research institutes, local councils as well as non-profit and public organisations.

The program consists of a number of mentoring and learning sessions, two separate one-month work placements at participating low-carbon organizations in different European regions, and concludes with a two-day workshop where participants share their placement experiences and wider thinking on systemic innovation.

Ryan´s first placement was with leading German Property Management company, WISAG, in Frankfurt, Germany. Ryan´s placement included time at the Frankfurt Airport Hilton, which is located in the LEED Gold-certified iconic office complex, The Squaire, at the Frankfurt Airport, where WISAG is the property manager.

Ryan helped WISAG to optimize the building's energy management systems, including better understanding of all energy and water meters and management system. The goal was to create a seamless and easy-to-use system that provides the building operators with a fine-grained picture of the building's consumption patterns so that optimization opportunities can then be highlighted.

Ryan´s second placement was with the Valencia Institute of Buildings, in Valencia, Spain. While there, he worked with the team on one of Climate-KIC’s flagship projects, the Building Technologies Accelerator, which focuses on measurable CO2 reduction in the building technology market – including both refurbishment as well as new buildings.

Our focus was innovative work environments, and understanding the relationship between greener office environments and increased occupant health, productivity, and satisfaction.
