Science says a lot about how we learn by watching! Something called Mirror Neurons in our brains fire when we take action or simply observe others. This explains empathy, social learning, and even how our behavior adapts to those around us. Last Sunday, as part of the Professional Speaker Series 4.0 at Success and Innovation, I realized the impact of Mirror Neurons and other intriguing topics while interacting with Rosy Rambani Rosy's story is a powerful reminder to believe in yourself. As an aspiring product manager, that's key. Her journey offered 3 even bigger takeaways: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬: Rosy mentioned the significance of Pareto Principle, urging us to identify the 20% of sources that yield 80% of results. This principle resonates strongly with the challenges faced by International students and New immigrants juggling various responsibilities. For example, by focusing on the essential tasks that contribute most to academic success or career advancement, individuals can optimize their efforts and achieve meaningful results amidst competing demands. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: Reflecting on the impact of our social circles, she emphasized the influence of the five (5) people we interact with most. As governments continue to adopt AI and automation to solve problems and improve efficiency, maintaining trust and transparency in these technologies is paramount. In this article published in the Ottawa Citizen, I discuss the importance of embracing responsible AI in the public sector. At IBM, we always ensure an AI governance framework is built on the following principles: 1. Transparency: AI models and algorithms should be explainable, auditable, and accountable. Organizations should understand how their AI systems make decisions.  2. Risk Assessment: We continuously assess and mitigate AI model bias, data quality, and security risks to ensure AI systems are safe, secure, and reliable. 3. Ethical Guidelines: Clear ethical guidelines for AI use are established, focussing on data privacy, fairness, and accountability.  4. Collaboration: Encourage collaboration between government, industry, civil society, and the public for a collaborative AI governance approach.  5. Continuous Monitoring: Regularly monitor and evaluate AI systems for bias, accuracy, fairness, and legal/regulatory compliance. Over the past year, as the host of the Future Forward series with TheFutureEconomy.ca, I've had the privilege of discussing key topics with leaders from tech, academia, and government. We delved into the greatest challenges and opportunities facing Canada’s digital economy, covering topics from the small business landscape to cybersecurity, AI, and data & privacy. In the final episode, I was joined by Honourable A Anne McLellan, P.C., O.C.,A.O.E. and Hon. Lisa Raitt, Co-Chairs of the Coalition for a Better Future, to discuss Canada’s path to future prosperity - a theme that remains high on the priority list for many of Canada's leaders. Despite concerns about inflation and stagnating productivity, we explored how inclusive growth, technology, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration can drive prosperity for all Canadians. For such an event to be successful, the active participation of experienced professionals in the industry, such as yourself, would be necessary. And your willingness to share your time and expertise with the attendees was a key element to the event’s success. The IT industry had the biggest chunk of mentees that had registered for the session, almost 40% of the total registrations. This big group had an inherent diversity where mentees hailed from backgrounds ranging from web development, full-stack development, data engineering, data analytics, networking, and cloud computing, and even included those who pivoted to IT from completely different industries. But the collective strength of our mentors had covered all the bases, such that each and every mentee was able to gain some valuable guidance. In an ever-evolving and dynamic industry such as IT, it is always important to be on top of the latest trends and developments. With this in mind, all the mentors who are at the forefront of the developments in their respective sub-domains made sure to pass on this knowledge to the mentees in a way that was digestible to them. 🇨🇦 Generative AI can help address one of the greatest economic threats to Canadian prosperity and living standards: low productivity, according to a new AI report by Canadian Chamber of Commerce. A few key findings in the report: 💡 Roughly 1 in 7 Canadian businesses (14%) are early Gen AI adopters. These innovators are found within every Canadian industry and region. 💡Early Gen AI adopters are more likely to be larger businesses, industries with highly educated workers, exporters or emerging enterprises. 💡On its current trajectory, Gen AI adoption by Canadian businesses could reach a tipping point in the next 3 to 6 years, which is likely too slow to keep pace with global competitors. 💡Canadian businesses believe GenAI can enhance their productivity and competitiveness. Replacing workers is not the driving force of adoption. 💡 Global Ipsos surveys reveal that Canadians are less knowledgeable and more nervous about AI than citizens of most other countries.
