Last week I wrote a post about not simply accepting the first thing that comes your way. This is about DISCERNMENT and making sure it’s what YOU really want. This message seemed to resonate with a lot of the women in my network, so I’ve been inspired to create some ‘how-to’s’ to help you lean into what you want (and deserve). How to DISCERN if something is right for you (btw I love this word – it means to recognize small details, accurately tell the difference between similar things, and make intelligent judgements by using such observations): 1️⃣ Your intuition will tell you right away; the challenge is being able to hear it through all the external clutter and loudmouthed doubt. Observe how your body feels when you think about what you’re being offered. Does it feel peaceful or anxious? You’ll need to get still and quiet to ascertain this. If this is challenging, take a day or two before you make a decision and in that time, take a few minutes each day to sit still and ask yourself whether this is right for you. 2️⃣ Observe whether you’re reacting from fear. Again, this will take some inner reflection. Are you saying yes because you’re worried it will be taken away from you, that this is your only chance, or that you better take what you can get? If you answer 'yes' to these questions it likely means that fear is in control. 3️⃣ Honestly assess whether this is what YOU want or if it’s something you think you ‘should’ want. Or is it something others tell you that you need/want? Reflect on whether it aligns to your core values or links to your overall life goals. *** Taking time to go inwards and giving yourself the gift of reflection, will open up the space to confidently make the decision that is best for you (which is what discernment is all about). You deserve to be discerning about your life. 💛 ____________ These are the types of conversations I have with my clients on a daily basis – helping them discern between intuition and external noise, responding instead of reacting, and taking control of what is most important to them. Why won't they reply to your emails? Culture could be a big factor. 👇 It could be that they are just busy—long delays before responses are not uncommon in the Canadian workplace. Or, it could be your writing style doesn't work for them. This isn't necessarily about your language skills. You can have excellent grammar and vocabulary and still write emails that aren't effective in another culture. For example, if you write in a style that's common in Japan, there's a good chance it will frustrate a Canadian supervisor or recruiter. I recently highlighted this in an exercise at the Job Hunt In Canada Workshop for Japanese, co-sponsored by TNO - The Neighbourhood Organization and MYNDS, and co-hosted by Megumi Noteboom, Anri Yoshizawa, and Merumo Unno. It doesn't have to be perfect before you use it. Whether it's inviting guests over before you've finished your remodeling or cleaned the house thoroughly, Maybe it's not going on vacation because you have no money (there's always a way! Maybe it's your LinkedIn profile that's not finished and you think you're not going to accept or reach out to make connections until your profile looks perfect. Please get over yourself! When I had no money I spent two years as a volunteer (well, paid local rates!) teacher in Thailand and was able to visit many places while I lived there. I've never had much interest in the sites - it's getting to know local people that excited me.  I then got to visit some of the friends I'd made when they returned to their various homes around the world. And yes, years later I was able to reciprocate their hospitality.  I worked just long enough to save for the next trip. I made friends when I was a scruffy traveler.  Many of those friendships blossomed into deeper friendships. Make connections now and give your network a chance to support you. Something unexpected happened when we spent time with people on the streets experiencing homelessness.   🙏🏽We realized that the greatest poverty in life is not financial poverty - it is the poverty of loneliness.   1 in 3 people currently experience extreme loneliness. It's safe to say we've all experienced it at some point in our lives.   In a society that can be highly stratified, let's choose today to extend our reach not only to the fringes of society, but to those around us.   We are all called to deeply care, and tend to the needs of people around us at work, school, etc.   Imagine a world where people are fully alive, deeply caring for one another, and relentlessly willing the good of the other: - Less crime - Healthier populations - Less mental illness - A stronger economy   Come spend time with Greater Love as we fight loneliness. Knowing these tips is helpful for most of us who are blind or legally blind. If you know our name, please useit and also announce your name as you approach. Example. “Hi Gina, it’s me Kris” When you do this: 1) It lets us know that you are speaking to us. When we can’t see who is talking, we don’t always know who you are. Sometimes we say hello to be polite but are not 100% sure who you are. 2) Often when someone is talking, we do not always know for sure if you are actually talking to us or to someone else. By addressing us by name saying “Hello Gina” then we know for sure you are talking to us. 3) It can be difficult at times to recognize a person by voice alone, even someone we know well. When you let us know who you are we find helpful. Remember, we do not have the visual cues that people with full sight use to recognize each other easily. 4) Our surrounding environment has many noises like traffic, people talking, kids playing outside, or the photocopier printing. There might be coffee brewing, a radio playing, or other background noises that make the sound of your voice more difficult to pick out. 5) If you see us and we don’t acknowledge you, please do get our attention. Often there are distractions that sighted people don’t recognize as being a distraction. Please think about this. When you cannot see an image, so you rely heavily on your hearing to be aware of your surroundings, it makes it even more difficult to identify someone when there are surrounding noises. Please get our attention because I guarantee you, we would really like to know that it is you so we can say hi and connect. As a speaker, I was recently asked this question: "What advice would you give to young women aspiring to leadership roles?" LOVE that question. Such an important one. My answer: "First of all, I want to say thank you. Your voice matters, and it needs to be heard. Not gonna lie—it’s tough work. We’re in the midst of a major culture shift in business right now, and what was the standard in a business, a left-brain dominated world where profit was above people, community, and nature - is being challenged. The world needs compassionate, creative, and well-rounded leaders. And it happens to be that women have been caring for their families and communities for thousands of years. So you are already part of a lineage of strong, purposeful, and caring beings that have held the world together since the dawn of time. So, go for it! And if I can give you one piece of advice, it’s this: Love yourself passionately, because if you don’t, you’ll always be waiting for someone to give you permission. But the work that needs to be done right now can’t wait for the permission of the people in power, whose ways have placed us in the mess we’re currently in. It needs to stem from your heart, your truth, and what you know needs to be done. So if you don’t love yourself fully and unconditionally yet, invest in developing that love. Also, invest daily in meditating and strengthening your clarity and purpose, because it will be questioned every day. And we need it to shine bright." Generally speaking, we Canadians are a humble bunch. We don’t like to talk about ourselves, and we certainly don’t brag about our achievements. In fact, many of us were taught NOT to self-promote as it often appears to others as arrogant or self-aggrandizing. So, how do we conduct an effective job search with one arm tied behind our backs? When it comes time to talk about ourselves in a job search situation, our skills are often lacking. It’s not every day someone asks us to “Tell us a little bit about yourself” or “Explain why you would make a great hire.” Yet, being able to accurately articulate our value is precisely the skill we need to be successful in our job search. Don’t get me wrong, we can be humble. Just not in this scenario. One of my favourite things about the I do is helping people find the words and the confidence to share their stories. When they get stuck, I ignite the conversation with a few subtle prompts. 💬 “Tell me more?” 💬 “How did that feel?” 💬 “What did you like most about that statement?” 💬 “What do your colleagues think/say/feel about that?” Often, I see people more clearly than they see themselves. That’s because I’m trained to listen better than most. I pick up on subtleties and nuances. I hear what others miss.
