The Canadian Commercial Corporation | Corporation commerciale canadienne announced on August 12th, 2024 the signing of a government-to-government (G2G) contract with France’s DGA - Direction générale de l'armement du Ministère de la Défense – a branch of the defense ministry for the sale of two (2) DHC-515 FIREFIGHTER™ aircraft manufactured by De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (DHC). Through CCC’s G2G contract, DHC will supply the waterbombers to France and spare parts, training, and maintenance support. In recent years, France has experienced a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of wildfires, largely attributed to climate change and shifting weather patterns. The new waterbombers will help reinforce the country’s firefighting resources as the effects of climate change continue to take hold. “The DHC-515 represents the best that Canadian aerospace engineering has to offer and CCC is proud to help the government of France protect its people against wildfires with the next generation aerial firefighting aircraft.” said Kim Douglas, VP of Business Development and Marketing, CCC. ANAC-EASA-FAA-TRANSPORTS CANADA Certification collaboration strategy 2025-2030 This is a very interesting document on the important topic of collaboration between 4 major Authorities on aircraft certification. It is dated October 29, 2024 and is revision 1 of a document signed in 2014. The attached picture describes its scope that cover aircraft certification and Rulemaking. ⏩️ Objective 1 covers metrics, maintenance of confidence, validation work plan and risk based validation. ⏩️ Objective 2 address validation and recognition of operational evaluation activities, recognition of Maintenance Review Board reports, of Instructions for Continuing Airworthiness and of Master Minimum Equipment List. ⏩️ Included in objective 3 are Unmanned Aircraft, Light Sport Aircraft, EVTOL, hybrid / electric propulsion, Hydrogen propulsion and Artificial Intelligence ( Large airplanes only, extension to other categories is considered) ⏩️ Objective 4 is about policy harmonisation, pre-Rulemaking studies and systematic communication of Rulemaking work. Following the launch of the Canadian CORRIDAIR Project last September, a significant collaboration has been formed to advance the infrastructure for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) commercial drone operations in Canada. Vertiko Mobilité / Vertiko Mobility, a vertiport developer, and Jaunt Air Mobility, a producer of electric-powered rotorcraft, are at the forefront of this initiative, supported by Thales, CAE, ASDR, Taïga telecom, Drone Express and SCI Group Inc Canada under the Consortium de recherche et d'innovation en aérospatiale au Québec (CRIAQ). The project has been awarded USD 2 million by the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie du Québec (MEIE). The goal is to trial an air corridor between the Ville de Joliette Hospital in southwest Quebec and the Conseil des Atikamekw de Manawan, located on the shores of Lake Métabeskéga in the Lanaudière region. Guillaume Côté PhD, President and CEO of CRIAQ, emphasized the project’s dual focus: “We view the platform as primarily addressing the potential social issues as well as the transportation advancements of health products via the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector. We must take these important elements into account.” Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of the Economy, Innovation and Energy, highlighted the strategic significance of the initiative: “The CORRIDAIR project is an important step in placing Quebec at the forefront of drone and air cab technologies. By investing in this infrastructure, we’re not only advancing the technology, but we’re also paving the way for viable, sustainable business models capable of meeting the needs of isolated regions.” Jaunt Air Mobility sees this award as a critical endorsement for eVTOL services in Quebec. Eric Côté, the company President, stated, “Developing an aircraft is one thing, but if you don’t integrate them into an operating system, it will remain an inaccessible technology, difficult to gain social acceptance. It was this objective that sealed the partnership between us and Vertiko Mobilité.” Thales, a leading Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Traffic Management company, joins the project with valuable expertise and validated data to advance the BVLOS capabilities. Thales' role as a technology partner for VantisUAS, North Dakota’s BVLOS UAS operations system, brings crucial know-how to the team. The 14th Air Navigation Conference in Montreal recently brought together global aviation leaders to focus on Performance Improvement Driving Sustainability. The aim of the Conference was to reach a global consensus on performance improvement initiatives that will best allow International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Member States and industry to address aviation’s global environmental challenges and the rapid evolution in aviation operations and technologies. The Conference saw strong collaboration, with many recommendations moving forward for tangible outcomes. The Australian delegation played a key role, with CASA’s Joe Rule co-authoring one paper, co-sponsoring nine others, and preparing briefings for over 200 working papers. ‘Our paper on flight safety and wildlife hazard risk management was well received and will be further explored by expert groups,’ Joe shared. ‘It was noted that there are opportunities for the reduction of bird and other wildlife strike hazards by applying new methodologies and technologies. ‘A lot of the recommendations will be referred to the Technical Panels and Working Groups for actioning, with many CASA technical experts participating in these panels.' ‘Most recommendations arising against the agenda items have been referred to existing expert groups for actioning, rather than requiring the establishment of new groups (one-off groups in some cases), which was a good outcome from previous practices at past conferences. Maeve is partnering with Pratt & Whitney Canada to design the M80 hybrid-electric 80-seater regional aircraft. The M80 aims to deliver the performance of a jet with the cost efficiency of a turboprop, boasting a range of up to 1,200 nautical miles (2,222 kilometers). The developers aim to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 40% compared to benchmark regional jets, while maintaining comparable speeds and altitudes. Maeve targets entry into service by 2032. Pratt & Whitney Canada, a Raytheon Technologies company, brings over four decades of experience in providing propulsion solutions to the regional aviation market. Anthony Rossi, Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at Pratt & Whitney Canada, commented, “Reaching the ambitious goals of reducing emissions and making aviation more sustainable will depend on combined efforts to accelerate technology innovation and drive collaboration across our industry. The Montreal-Ottawa Chapter of the Vertical Flight Society is happy to present an in-person event in the Montreal region: From Crash to Clarity: Understanding Helicopter Accidents. Insights from Canada’s Transportation Safety Board and Bell Textron Canada 🚁 📆November 26th, 2024, doors open at 5:30pm, talk starts at 6:30pm. 📍3 Brasseurs Centropolis Laval The theme of the evening will be the investigation of helicopter incidents and accidents, with a focus on some of the technical cause factors for some recent accidents. Starting with an introduction to the Transportation Safety Board (TSB), Jean-Pierre “JP” Régnier will present a review of vertical lift-related accidents that have occurred over the last four years. The cases presented will include accidents for which the main cause factor was technical in nature, within the accident’s chain of events. Benoit Albert will follow with a second presentation on the most common Bell helicopter incident signatures, which are often used to reconstruct the accident’s timeline. We will see that most helicopter accidents can be dissected by preserving and analyzing the evidence located at the scene of the incident. Each aircraft incident requires the collaboration of multiple different specialists to establish its root causes, and formulate recommendations to prevent future accidents. Quebec is extending its partnership with Airbus Canada until 2035, with a joint investment of $1.65 billion to continue manufacturing the A220 planes. This collaboration, which sees Airbus investing $1.2 billion and Quebec contributing $413 million, will significantly boost the aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. It's an incredible step forward for Airbus Canada and reinforces Quebec's position as a key player in the aerospace industry. For Airbus Canada, this partnership means doubling production rates and securing thousands of quality jobs in Quebec. With 3,500 employees dedicated to the A220 project, this investment ensures long-term stability and growth. With this investment, they will be able to double the production rate in the next 14 months! It signals continued innovation and growth for the broader aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, benefiting suppliers and the community at large.
