Responsive electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure goes hand-in-hand with enabling robust and innovative EV charging solutions. But what policies and regulations are in place or, more to the point, need to be implemented to meet the demands of Canada’s e-Mobility market? This was the hot button topic explored by our Manager of Distribution Policy & Compliance Helen Guo and her panel at @EV CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE CANADA 2024: “The Role of Policies and Regulations in EV Charging Infrastructure Roll-Out.” Helen and her fellow panelists discussed specific policies currently in place to support EV charging infrastructure deployment, learnings from other jurisdictions, incentives and programs to further support electrification. Helen offered insights into the OEB’s newly established EV Charging Connection Procedures, which sets out standardized and streamlined requirements that Ontario electricity distributors must follow; our ongoing policy work, including a new electricity delivery rate for installers of public charging stations; and the issue that charger reliability poses as a significant barrier to EV adoption. Although still a new area for Ontario, EV integration is evolving and growing quickly. One rising trend in the #automotive market in Canada that became supercharged during the semi-conductor related vehicle shortages of 2021-23 was the growth of build-to-order (BTO) vehicle purchases – where a consumer orders a specific vehicle, rather than buying from inventory. Already championed by some new entrants such as Tesla, BTO grew in prominence in 2021-23, largely by necessity, as dealer inventories hit record lows. Now in 2024 with inventories restored, DAC reached out to both dealers and consumers to gather some data as to the perceived future of this dynamic. The research clearly showed that Canadian vehicle purchasers are willing to wait some time to take delivery of their new vehicle. Indeed only 10.1% of consumers noted a willingness to wait less than a week while 55.7% said they would be willing to wait more than a month. Over twenty percent of consumers (22.6%) noted that they would be willing to wait more than 3 months. Dealers also clearly believe that some form of BTO is here to stay. When asked about their outlook for sales in 2030, dealers stated that they expect 45.3% of sales at that time to be BTO - with traditional inventory sales at 54.7%. “Consumers are clearly willing to wait a reasonable amount of time to take delivery of their desired vehicle” commented Andrew King, Managing Partner at DAC. He continued, “Assuming supply chains are working efficiently and vehicles can be delivered in a timely manner, extensive on the ground inventory does not appear to be a prerequisite for success in meeting consumer demand.” The DAC Light Vehicle Study is an annual survey of 4,500 Canadian vehicle maintainers and purchasers that has since 1992 tracked vehicle maintenance incidence, costs, DIY/DIFM rates, brand preferences, and much more across multiple product categories. #radio #radioadvertising

ICYMI: Canadian zero-emission vehicle adoption hit an all-time high in Q3 2024 with S&P Global Mobility data showing battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles made up 16.5 per cent of all new vehicle registrations in the quarter. “This means that [in Q3 2024] approximately 1 in every 6 new cars registered in Canada was a ZEV,” reads the report. “This growth reflects a 14.4% increase in overall ZEV volume compared to the previous quarter, driven by a 15.1% rise in BEVs and a 12.4% increase in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).” S&P predicts the leap — up from 13.4 per cent in the second quarter of this year — puts Canada on track to surpass 15 per cent new zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales for the year. As part of its long-term forecasting, S&P Global is projecting that, were Canada to maintain its current adoption trajectory, the country could reach 25.3 per cent new ZEV sales by the end of 2026 and more than 30 per cent by the end of 2027. Interesting piece I was quoted here by CBC’s Lisa Xing on Chinese EVs and the Canadian market. There is a very clear delineation emerging between those of us with a stake in the auto industry and leading the charge for transitioning Canadian jobs and companies and the unaffiliated environment lobby interested simply in EV product regardless of origin. You don’t have to analyze and decipher the arguments, they are presented on the record. The former say the transition must be accomplished thoughtfully and with Canada’s industrial interests as priority one. The latter says Canada’s climate climate interests are more important than industrial ones. I really just have one question though: how does coveting clean and cheap end products from the world’s worst polluters advance Canada’s climate interests? It doesn’t. I developed utility-scale renewable energy projects and the public policy that launched it in a previous life. This morning, I was joined by Brian Kingston from the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association (CVMA) and David C. Adams from the Global Automakers of Canada (GAC) as we launched “Countdown to 2035” in Ottawa. These were my remarks: “As the Federal Government’s Zero Emissions Vehicle aspirations start to meet market realities around the country, the Countdown to 2035 will provide valuable information and insights to consumers and public officials as to what is required, where and at what pace. The positive progression towards higher Zero Emissions Vehicle adoption that we are seeing in Canada is also starting to lay bare the stark realities of what consumers consider to be essential pre-conditions for them to make the transition to these vehicles and what constitutes a positive ownership experience once they have done so: affordability and an available and functioning charging infrastructure. Without those two key factors, consumers are very hesitant to make this change. And for those that have made the change, they define their ownership experience and with it their desire to re-purchase and remain in an EV as evidenced by a recently published survey of McKinsey. The data presented by Countdown to 2035 not only shows how woefully short we are falling in meeting those needs, but also how non-sensical and counterproductive recent decisions by some Provinces to curtail their purchase incentives are. The bottom line is Canadians need Federal and Provincial action for better, more reliable charging infrastructure and supports for purchasing Zero Emission Vehicles in every segment of the market.”

Canada’s 2024 budget includes tax credit for building EV factories. Canada’s federal budget includes a tax break hoping to entice automakers to build electric vehicle (EV) factories in the country. The incentive offers a 10 percent tax credit on the capital cost of buildings used for EV manufacturing.
