A second bill on #OpenBanking in Canada is expected this fall. The federal government plans to introduce a follow-up to the budget implementation bill, Bill C-69, expected after the 2024 fall economic statement. The bill will include key aspects like accreditation for participating entities. So my saga with #scotiabank Contact Center continues.... I received a questionable text yesterday stating my account was overdue and I need to select various options to make a payment. There is no mention of account #, scotia branding, etc. I then received a call which I did not answer, as I was occupied, where the VM transcript basically said, "You in English You do it now..." I then received an email, again seemed odd, asking me to make a payment. At this point, I contacted the #Scotiabank call center to have my concerns addressed. The agent had me on hold for what felt like 5-10 mins. I asked, am i being placed on hold for so long because you are having system issues - her response was yes. After further being placed on hold - she confirmed that the attempts to notify me where legitimate and I indeed was overdue on a $50 dollar payment. I asked her, how can that be when: 1 - I have Autopay on (talk to your branch), 2 - Autopay was used to make the Oct payment (talk to your branch), 3 - Is my credit impacted due to your issues (talk to Equifax/Transunion or go talk to your branch). So a few observations: 1 - This relentless focus on technology transformation, GenAI is eroding the quality of services and that ever so important human touch. 2 - As senior management continues its focus on riding the wave of cutting edge technology, they are failing to realize that the employee experience is suffering. Employees are struggling with a lack of connectedness, engagement, enablement and empowerment. 3 - Organizations are talking about Client-Assist, Agent-Assist technologies (decades old), but yet, they are not realizing a simple CKM can be a hugely successful solution (SearchNow, HelpNow, WriteAnswers) 4 - Organizations that solely focus on KPIs/SLAs/SLOs lose touch with the quality of service because as we all know, numbers can be manipulated. 5 - As each organization is focusing on cyber and phishing attacks, etc. it might be worthwhile to look at contact types and contact content to make it easier for customers to know its YOU. None of this is complex. But yet, I see every organization struggling with that human touch. Balance can be achieved between cutting edge technology and organization change. It looks as though open banking is finally coming to Canada...  ...but why has it taken so long?   In short, open banking allows consumers to seamlessly and securely share their personal and financial information between approved banks and companies.   It promises simplicity for consumers, making it easier to switch banks, visualize spending and embrace new financial products and services.   It also helps to level the playing field between legacy banks and innovative new fintech firms, enabling companies to share data freely and increasing competition to encourage all companies to better respond to customer needs.   “All fintechs want is to be able to compete on a level playing field, where consumers vote with their dollars. The consumer’s right to choose, enforced by the government, will give them that”, said Alex Vronces - executive director of Fintechs Canada.  The open banking concept has been on the government’s radar since 2018, but last month’s budget finally set out some tangible steps to making it a reality - with $1 million allocated to the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada by 2025 and $4.1 million for the Ministry of Finance over the next three years.   While this is great news – especially for smaller fintech firms who have long been stuck in the shadows of traditional banks – it has also brought fresh criticism. Why has it taken the government so long to act? And will these new changes come quickly enough to support innovation and competition in the here and now?  Whenever it happens, Canada will be one of the last G7 countries to embrace open banking.   Lynnette Purda, a professor of finance at the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, believes its slow adoption is primarily due to perspective.  “There’s a definite movement from a perspective of this [open banking] being competition to co-operation and collaboration and partnership.”  https://lnkd.in/gsabiZ3P What is your view? Transitioning to a new role at Shopify has been a journey filled with both excitement and challenges. Here are a few key learnings from my experience so far. Prioritizing Information: One of the biggest challenges has been sifting through the vast amount of information available. With so much happening across the organization and an abundance of content to absorb, distinguishing between what's actionable and what's just for context is crucial. I've learned the importance of seeking early guidance from my team to help prioritize effectively. This approach has been invaluable in focusing on what truly matters and ensuring my contributions have the most impact. It's about striking a balance between being informed and overwhelmed, and I've found that open communication with colleagues has been key to navigating this. By actively engaging in discussions and leveraging the expertise of those around me, I've been able to streamline my focus and direct my efforts where they are needed most. Embracing Change and Adaptability: This is a dynamic environment where some applications and processes have been around for ages, while others may have been introduced just the month before I started. Some systems endure because they work exceptionally well, while others might be in desperate need of a rewrite, refactor, or replacement. This mix of tradition and innovation requires a willingness to ask more questions than anyone else in the room. It's about understanding the rationale behind existing systems and being game to exploring new approaches. Through all of this, I am realizing that change, while daunting, offers a chance for growth and reinvention. I was ready for a new challenge, and I got exactly what I was looking for. The supportive and collaborative spirit of the team has made this transition not only possible but rewarding.
