We're nearly half way through Summit Day at Security Education Conference Toronto (SecTor) and #TheAISummit room has been consistently busy. Our latest panel - 'Strengthening Cybersecurity and AI in Canada: Guarding our national infrastructure and interests'- featuring RCMP and Ontario Government experts discussing national security challenges within Canada generated fantastic insights. 🛡️ Key takeaways: 🗳️ We're in an election "super cycle" with 73 countries holding elections this year - the potential for misuse of AI is high. ⚡ AI is accelerating cyber threats - what took hackers 8 hours now takes 2-3 minutes 🤝 Traditional siloed approaches won't work - public/private partnerships are essential for accelerated progress 🎯 Job requirements need rethinking - curiosity and drive matter more than certifications 💾 Canada's current disclosure rules pose challenges - one investigation had 8 terabytes of data to process in 18 months! The message was clear: We need to break down silos and leverage expertise across sectors - from academia to private sector to government agencies. What i want to share today is not a cyber matter but unbelievable degree of amateurism in handling of operational risk management...with HUGE impact (people life, companies' images, loss of money, and much more..) For one minute, let us put the bad delivery of update by Crowdstrike aside. What about the responsibilities of impacted companies in this issue? they cannot go eyes shut pushing in production a vendor released update on their underlying digital systems supporting business without enough care, solid change management process, proper service delivery...not acceptable at all.... Were there test of the update in non prod environment? Were there a validation by a committee to deploy a vendor provided update in prod? Where is the rollback plan?
