In Montreal, a taxi has a base rate of $4.10, then $2.05/km and $0.77 per minute waiting. I hate to break it to the CBC but that's also an algorithm. Any pricing scheme is going to be better for some and worse for others. And like with almost all AI, transparency or explainability is an illusion. Is it better to know how your taxi fare is calculated, as above, but have no idea how much the trip will cost, or to know how much the trip will cost but have no idea how it's calculated? It's not about the underlying technology, or what constitutes an algorithm, it's the impact that matters. It would be a very cool study to look at who benefits from one-size-fits-all time and distance pricing, vs. who benefits from customized pricing. Always great to speak with Jon Fortt! AI is definitely going to change the landscape of enterprise apps, esp. when it comes to security & risk management. Build static workflows for "what if" scenarios are neither productive nor competent. Dynamic data mining and workflows will be far more productive for the data security use cases. AI is best for these "composable" apps.

💥 Two years after Tim Horton’s settled a class action in Canada for sharing location data through its use of the Radar SDK in its app… 💥…And two years after Greenley vs. Kochava claimed the Kochava SDK intercepts consumers’ location data when using mobile apps 💥…Bender vs. Twilio claims the Segment SDK collects personal information in a similar fashion. Are class action plaintiffs taking up the cause of SDK liability? Or are these flukes? In Bender vs. Twilio, Noah Bender downloaded and used the Calm meditation app on his cell phone. He later claimed the Segment SDK intercepted sensitive communications between himself and Calm. Segment is designed for developers to collect data , including search terms, search results, keystrokes, button presses, page views, and consumers’ names and email addresses. Bender is suing Twilio for violating America's Wiretap Act, the California Wiretap Act, and California's Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act (CDAFA). This may be the Calm before the storm for class actions. Bender's complaint alleges over 11,000 app developers have integrated Segment into apps for shopping, productivity, gaming, and mental health. Shouldn't we have an *actual* conversation about how Element AI, Canada's beloved AI company (until it was acquired by Silicon Valley) *before* funding another AI company hundreds of millions? Just a thought! Element AI (now a part of ServiceNow) isn't our only public conversation to be had. North Inc., before it was acquired by Google, shares a similar story. I wrote about it in Artificial Intelligence Policy and Funding in Canada: Public Investments, Private Interests. "Prior to the acquisition by Google, North Inc. was heavily funded through grants by the Canadian government when it was under independent ownership. Even 'ex-Google' tags don't seem to cut it in the product management job market. Let's unravel the surprising reason why. 👇 I was reviewing a product leader's resume the other day. He had managed teams of up to five people and had a significant impact at various places. All seemed to be good. But he had been applying at many places and not getting much response at all. He was puzzled and said something that many clients have told me recently. "Shobhit, I thought it would be easier." Easier to get interviews, to get noticed, to get to the final rounds, to get offers. But it just isn't today. Even when you come with a pedigree as "ex-Google" or "Experienced product manager" its not easy. Hiring managers just don't want another "accomplished product leader." They want to know that you are EXACTLY the right fit for the job. That you bring accomplishments and skills that are unique to the job. This is precisely why so many product managers struggle 👉 They build generic resumes and pitches 👉 They apply to tons of places without a clear strategy 👉 They struggle to articulate why they are a good fit for the role 👉 They do endless smocks with people who have no idea how to give them the right feedback 👉 They have some success.....and then do not get past the next round 👉 They repeat the process What if what it took for you to start getting MORE offers, and even the ideal offer, was a SIMPLE tweak in the words you're using in your narrative and stories that positioned you the right way? Gaining buy-in for building 0 to 1 products inside large companies relies on effectively communicating the product vision.. Lenny Rachitsky recent podcast with Mihika Kapoor (product leader at Figma) is packed full of insight on building new products inside large companies and her process for building compelling product vision documents 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁: "The first is that you cannot go into a vacuum and come out with a compelling vision that does not exist. You have to be fundamentally inseparable from your users, and also, fundamentally inseparable from your team. And so, I think that there is sort of this important cross-pollination of functions that is really important in crafting a compelling vision" 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗰 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝗿𝗴: "And then if you're on the larger side, I think that having a really tight relationship with your sales team is really important. And basically, just being on sales calls because you want to be in a situation where the customer pain points on sales calls are cross pollinating into the product roadmap. And so I think really leaning into that, building that relationship between these traditionally more siloed orgs and hopping on those calls is something that I'd really recommend." What can product managers learn from the world's most popular cricketer? Here's the latest surprising lesson "All the need to do is to put on our spinners. He will slow down." For those of you who don't know cricket, this statement might as well be in a foreign language that you don't speak. So, let me take a step back. Virat Kohli is the world's third most followed athlete on Instagram, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He is also by far the most popular cricketer. He is 35, which many people consider to be the latter half of his career. They expect him to retire in 2-3 years. People have accused him of being slow to bat against spinners (i.e., he scores runs slowly against a particular kind of bowler). But he proved them all wrong in this year's India Premier League. He scored 30% faster than before. And above all, he addressed this glaring weakness in a way you can only expect from him. Virat Kohli, a true icon, demonstrated a hallmark of greats - re-inventing himself when he had many years of success behind him. His story is a testament to the power of career transformation. And that's exactly what some of our best students do. Getting another job is probably doable all by yourself. It's not about a job. Consider the success stories of our students. I had the opportunity to attend the Toronto Machine Learning Society (TMLS) Summit. Sharing my learnings and observations: ➡ RAG RAG RAG ... and did I say RAG? Contextual Semantic Search is how Enterprises are unlocking the value of GenAI ➡ Evaluating the accuracy and reliability of LLMs is becoming increasingly important. Frameworks such as RAGAS.io and TruEra are there to help! 🏁 Hamza Farooq hosted an incredibly interactive session covering the LLM ecosystem and what to take into account for GenAI applications. 🆕 Royal Sequeira Aslesha Pokhrel Christopher Tee delivered a hands-on workshop covering DSPy to optimize your prompts like a software engineer. First interaction with this framework and I really liked how modular it is and felt like Object Oriented Programming for LLMs. 🔗 Yizhi Yin covered Graph RAG and helped us build a personalized product recommendation engine. Pretty cool. 🧠 Ehsan Amjadian talked about lessons learned from building a RAG solution for the financial industry. Very insightful. I need to look into beyond just my chunking strategy 🤓 🙏 Thank you to David Scharbach and the entire organization committee for a great event. Haven't seen the inaugural Pendo Feature Adoption Report from 2019 yet? Based on 615 subscriptions for customers using Pendo >1 year. 😬 Only 12% of features are frequently used, 8% moderately used. 😩 80% of features are rarely or never used.  Optimizing onboarding and adoption of the most important, core features will get the product-led flywheel spinning and not clutter up the user experience. Four Surprising Lessons from Product Managers Who Transitioned into AI/ML Product Management Roles. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the insightful discussion we had with two alums of our programs who came back to share with the group about how to transition into AI/ML product management. They successfully transitioned into AI/ML product management roles and shared invaluable lessons from their journeys. Here are my top four takeaways: Master Your Stories: Three emphasized the importance of having three core stories that you know inside and out. It’s not just about showcasing your AI/ML skills but how you can zoom in and out of these stories to answer different types of questions. This narrative approach they learned in the program was critical to their success. Behavioral Mastery is Critical: Many underestimate behavioral interviews, thinking it’s just about talking about past experiences. As my co-founder 👋 Sam Feldman aptly said, “Behavioral is deceptively hard.” It requires consistent practice and self-critique, including reviewing your mock interviews. There’s no excuse for not watching your recordings—this feedback loop is crucial. Leverage Networking Techniques: Our alums found that the outreach techniques they learned from the program were more effective than applying online, especially in a challenging market. By targeting hiring managers directly, they secured interviews that would have been impossible through traditional applications. Though it may seem daunting, this method can set you apart in a crowded field. AI/ML aspects were a tiny aspect of the work: They had to demonstrate that they understood where the technology could be used and the trade-offs rather than position themselves as experts. They also did not do ANY technical learning and didn't have any AI/ML certificates 😀 For those navigating the competitive AI/ML space, these lessons reinforce the basics: hone your narrative, master the behavioral aspects, and don’t underestimate the power of strategic networking. Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez says that #1 blocker for Enterprise GenAI use cases is data privacy and #2 blocker is the cost (implies ROI). He also explained what Canadian AI startup, Cohere does and how they make money. A must watch for anyone who is interested in Enterprise GenAI use cases. He also said that GenAI fear mongering is cheap ways to get attention (I am paraphrasing, he didn’t use the word cheap). Quite a bit commentary on Google Cloud AI developments as well. Other mentions Oracle and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Aidan comes across as a mature tech leader for his young age. He sounds more realistic and less me too, in GenAI hyped era. AI / MBA / CFO question: How can a small business reasonably be “supported” to implement AI? Other than training employees to use LLMs, I haven’t seen any Cost-to-Benefit Ratio that works. Have you? Assumptions: 70-75% of people in Canada/US work in a small business. Average sales in the US for small business is 300k/year, about the same in Canada Net profit available for reinvestment approx 10% / 30k

The question I get asked the most is should I focus more on strategy or on execution. The answer is irrespective of what you are focusing on don’t forget to communicate the net impact of your focus. Personally I tend to put more effort on execution. It has helped with the following: 1. Learn the product, customer issues and the organization in depth 2. Ability to partner and gain the trust of your colleagues 3. Showing tangible results and customer impact at the end of the year

Air Canada was SUED over wrong answers from its customer support bot. Here’s why it happened ⬇️ The chatbot linked to a page with the right policy but gave an incorrect answer in its response. This means the chatbot had access to the right data, but its knowledge base fell out of sync with the live content on the website. If: 🔹 the website content was treated as the main data source to update the bot, or 🔹a single CMS (Content Management System) was used to synchronize both the bot and customer support page This mistake could have been avoided. --- I discuss possible reasons why Air Canada's chatbot hallucinated responses in our latest article.
