🔄 Changes, expectations, troubling thoughts and fears about the future generate negative stress and impact our mental and emotional health. 🌟 Whether it’s adolescents facing final exams or executives, our workshops repeatedly show that no one is spared from negative stress. Delivering peak performance, working under time pressure, and maintaining emotional control in conflict situations is easier said than done. However, mental strength can be developed when we consider body and mind as one: aligning body and mind is the essence of martial arts and some elements of training can be well integrated into everyday life. We've all been there: your organization is going through change, rumours have started flying, and the helpful reassurance you try to offer backfires. I loved this article by Liz Fosslien in Harvard Business Review on "How Leaders Miscommunicate When Tensions Are High". She nails the common pitfalls--I've seen them all in my experience coaching leadership teams. Here are three of them to watch out for, along with some practical examples of how to improve communications in difficult times. 1. Lack of Clarity: Ambiguity in communication can lead to confusion and misalignment. Take time to ensure your messaging is clear and direct to maintain team focus. 👎 "We had to cancel some projects. Move on to other tasks." 👍 "Due to budget constraints, we are cancelling Project X. We will reallocate resources to Project Y, which has higher strategic importance. Team members affected by the cancellation will be reassigned with clear new objectives by the end of this week." 2. Over-reassurance: While it’s important to calm fears, over-reassurance can appear dismissive. Balance empathy with honesty to sustain trust. 👎 "There might be a change in leadership, but it shouldn’t affect you." 👍 "We are preparing for a leadership transition to bring fresh perspectives. The new leader will be introduced at our quarterly meeting, where they will share their vision and strategic plans. Your roles and responsibilities will remain unchanged during this period." 3. Ignoring Feedback: Shutting out team input during high-stress times can worsen the situation. Foster an environment where feedback is welcomed and valued. The tricky part: invite input that you will be able to implement and remember to acknowledge it. 👎 "We’re not sure what the future holds, but keep working hard." 👍 "While we finalize our future direction, our immediate focus is on sustaining our current projects and improving customer satisfaction. We are hosting a series of workshops to gather your input and will communicate the finalized strategy by the end of next month." How to set boundaries with your Boss👇🏾👇🏾 👉🏾Sometimes you can’t outright tell your boss - “no” 👉🏾If that’s the case instead of simply saying ‘no,’ setting boundaries with your boss is about proposing alternatives solutions 👉🏾Solutions that accommodate you and meet the needs of the team/ organization in some capacity Today I did a segment on Breakfast TV with hosts Sid and Meredith, and we spoke about setting and maintaining personal boundaries with out conflict. One thing that we touched on but didn’t get a full opportunity to dive deep on was what I shared above 👆🏾setting boundaries with your boss. No matter the setting or scenario you get to prioritize your feelings and personal boundaries. It called self care! When you’re “good” your boss and the organization benefits too. Companies who understand this will foster culture centred on human values. One crucial element of the #coachingapproach is the Expertise of Not Knowing. It is a concept highlighted by Buchinger (1998) that states that the #coach should not be seduced by the expectation of knowing the solution or working on quick solutions. Instead, they should consider #uncertainty as an integral part of the solution process. This approach can serve as a model for the client, relieving them of the need to know everything and helping them navigate complex situations without the pressure of having all the answers, fostering a more open and explorative problem-solving environment. A recent HBR article presented a framework for leaders on how to handle their employees' #emotions that I found worth sharing; 𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑌𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝐸𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑦𝑒𝑒 𝐹𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑟𝑦, 𝑆𝑎𝑑, 𝑜𝑟 𝐷𝑒𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑. By mastering these steps, leaders can effectively support their employees' emotions, leading to a healthier and more successful organization. 𝟏. 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 It's common to have a go-to response when dealing with others' emotions. Many people tend to jump into solution mode too quickly. To improve, be aware of your actions in different contexts and ensure your response matches the situation's needs. 𝟐. 𝐏𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Observe how your employees react to your responses. Did they seem grateful for your concern? Did they provide #feedback that could help you respond better next time? Understanding their reactions can guide you in meeting their needs more effectively. 𝟑. 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐫𝐞 Develop a variety of responses by observing how others handle emotions. Experiment with new approaches in everyday interactions, such as apologizing for causing frustration or offering a smile to someone who looks sad. These small experiments can prepare you for high-stakes situations. 𝟒. 𝐀𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐞 Start by recognizing your employee's feelings with a validating remark, such as "That really is a lot; I’d be overwhelmed too." Once they feel #heard, follow up with #advice or assistance, like sharing time management strategies or helping prioritize tasks. This two-step approach—accepting the emotion and then helping shift the mood—is highly effective. 𝟓. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Use the same approach to address your team's collective emotions. Acknowledge their feelings and then provide guidance on moving forward. For example, after a tough loss, acknowledge the sadness and then encourage the team to focus on the next challenge.

𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒚: 𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑨𝑫𝑯𝑫 𝑪𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 (𝑾𝒆𝒆𝒌 25) Last week, I had the privilege of attending a workshop titled "𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗗𝗛𝗗 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘀" 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝘀. As someone who embrace lifelong learning, I am interested to explore how to partner with clients with ADHD. I found the insights from #BarbaraWilliams both profound and practical. Thanks to Barbara and the ICF Calgary Charter Chapter for organising this meaningful workshop. Two key takeaways particularly resonated with me and draw my attention to any type of coaching. 𝟭. 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆  Barbara reminded us that trust and safety are at the heart of a transformative coaching relationship. Reaching out to a coach, often a stranger, takes immense #courage, especially for clients managing ADHD. Acknowledging that initial act of courage is just as important as focusing on outcomes. In coaching, we may get caught up in measuring success by how clients meet their goals. Yet, it’s essential to honour the courage it takes to simply begin the journey. This was a powerful reminder for me to hold space for my clients’ bravery as a part of their transformation process. 𝟮. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲   Another impactful takeaway was Barbara’s emphasis on redefining what success looks like for clients with ADHD. Traditional benchmarks of success often don’t apply in the same way. Instead, every small step forward is worthy of recognition. Barbara drove this point home by repeating a word that stuck with me:  "Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate." For clients navigating ADHD, small achievements whether it is completing one task or making progress toward a goal, deserve celebration. Acknowledging these moments reinforces positive behaviour and builds momentum. This insight reminded me that coaching is not just about big milestones but also about cherishing every incremental victory. 🎯Reflection:  How often do we pause to acknowledge the courage it takes to start something new? And how can we celebrate the small wins, both in our own lives and in the lives of those we support? 🚩Call to Action: This week, I challenge you to honour the bravery it takes to seek help and to celebrate small victories along the way. #ThursdayThriving Another amazing #collisiontoronto Day 2 was done. This year, there are 37,832 attendees from 117 countries joining the #collision conference. 42 percent are women. There are so many great innovative solutions and potential use of AI and Gen AI. Very exciting to see. However, what I love most about attending tech conferences such as the #collision is more than seeing the cool applications of technology. It is about through listening to the experts, talking to professionals from different backgrounds and perspectives that made me pause and ponder on the ideas of how our future may look like, how society may change depending on the decisions and steps we are going to take now and each step of the way as individuals, companies, and governments on the use of technology and how much effort we are to make to help people to navigate the change and impact that it is going to bring. The key is to keep an open mind , willingness to listen to diverse ideas and perspectives, learn together, and to collaborate and find a right path for human and planet to evolve with tech. "Making Homefun a Fun Activity: How to Get Your Kids Excited About Learning at Home!" As parents, we all want our kids to do well in school. One way to help is by making sure they enjoy and take part in their schoolwork, even at home. But what do you do when homewfun feels like a burden? Here’s how to make homefun fun so your child looks forward to it! What Not to Do: 📌 Don’t Push or Nag: Constantly reminding or pressuring your child to do their homefun can make it feel like a chore. This can create negative feelings about learning. 📌Don’t Give Rewards for Every Task: Avoid giving rewards every time they finish homefun. This can make them only work for rewards instead of learning because they want to. 📌 Don’t Hover: Hovering too much can make your child feel like they can’t do things on their own. Let them take the lead with little help from you. This builds their confidence and independence. 📌 Don’t Compare Them to Other Kids: Every child learns at their own pace. Comparing them to other kids can make them feel bad or discouraged. How to Make Homefun Fun: 🎯 Create a Fun Learning Space: Set up a special spot in your home for homefun. Let your child decorate it with their favorite colors or supplies. A fun space can make them excited to learn. 🎯 Set a Routine: Pick a regular time each day for homefun. Having a set routine helps build discipline and makes it a normal part of their day. 🎯 Turn Homefun into Games: Make homework more fun by turning it into games. Use flashcards, puzzles, or challenges. For example, turn math problems into a race against time! 🎯 Encourage Breaks and Movement: Kids can’t sit still for long. Give them short breaks to stretch, snack, or dance. This helps them stay refreshed and focused. 🎯 Show Interest and Celebrate Effort: Ask about what they’re working on and show interest in their homefun without taking over. Praise their hard work, not just the results. This will keep them motivated. 🎯 Give Them Choices: Let your child decide how they want to do their homework. For example, ask them which subject they want to start with. Giving them choices boosts their motivation. 🎯 Be a Role Model: Kids copy what they see. If they see you reading or working on tasks, they’ll be more likely to see homefun as something normal and positive. For the last decade, mental well-being has been on the decline — and stress is on the rise 📈: 41% of employees report experiencing “a lot of stress.” That number increases to 60% for those working in companies with bad management practices. How do we fix it? Popular solutions include wellbeing apps or stress management training. But meditation apps alone can’t counteract the stress of poor management or a toxic work culture.
