Refreshing to hear Olivia Leland Co-Impact at Devex #Climate & #Gender Justice event remind us that women don't live single issue lives. The women driving real change on gender equality do not experience the world in siloes. This reflects exactly the experience of Equal Measures 2030 coalition members. This is why the #2024SDGGenderIndex we built together reflects a gender lens on all of the #SDGs. If nearly 75% of ALL SDG Targets are reliant on gender equality, and women changemakers don't recognise siloes in their lives, why are #Climate and #Gender conversations so separated during this #UNGA79 #UNClimateWeek #SOTF?? We will only live in a more equal, stable, prosperous and sustainable world when we tackle underlying unfairness, exploitation and extraction in our society. As part of my Policy Fellowship with Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto, I had the opportunity to review the insightful report, "Demand for Impact of Mentoring Newcomer Professionals: The Case of TRIEC Mentoring Partnership" This comprehensive study highlights the significant positive outcomes of community-based mentorship programs for skilled newcomer professionals in Canada. The TRIEC Mentoring Partnership pairs internationally educated professionals with mentors to overcome job market barriers. Key findings show participants are 2.45 times more likely to find quality jobs in 3 months, with 85% finding jobs in 6 months. 80% report improved job skills, and mentees expand networks fourfold. The demand for such programs is growing, with a significant portion of recent immigrants in major Canadian cities being potential beneficiaries. However, the program is not enough, and additional mentoring activities are needed to address the nuanced needs of newcomers in various sectors and stages of their careers. Thanks V. This is truly an important discussion. - The status quo is not good enough. We have a growing "charity gap", and our social problems have lingered for too long. Voluntary, independent decision-making has not worked . We are overdue to systemize a change. The recent increase in the DQ is a prime example of such a necessary + beneficial systemized change. We need to get cranky and see the proverbial glass as half empty. We need to be self-critical. We need to act with urgency. We need Future of Good, Imagine Canada, CFC, and others (GIV3), to develop the platform for change. Asking for a "home in government" is not the answer, and the constant denial by Ottawa should be recognized. This is why www.GIV3.ca is launching a new initiative we call "Mutare" (Latin for change). And this is why we initiated some qualitative research this month (with ~25+ thought leaders) to help develop a Strategic Plan for the sector . - I would be happy to chat why I believe trust is not higher. But the key focus is 'what we do about it'. We must do something about it. It starts with being strategic.

Here are the questions I leave Executive Directors/Board Chairs to reflect on: ✔️ Infrastructure: Is your infrastructure robust enough to support your goals? ✔️ Budget: How effectively are you managing your budget to ensure sustainability? ✔️ Fundraising Goals: Are your fundraising strategies aligned with your mission and growth targets? ✔️ 5-Year Plan: Do you have a clear and actionable 5-year plan in place? Last chance to check out this strategy for developing program-specific Value for Money (VfM) criteria before it moves into the archive for paid subscribers. VfM criteria, focusing on aspects of good resource use, are often specified by donors and decision-makers. Commonly, five criteria known as the “5Es” (economy, efficiency, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and equity), are defined by entities like the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and National Audit Office (NAO). However, there’s no universal set of VfM criteria and even if we use the 5Es, generic definitions won’t do. I recommend a flexible, inclusive approach to developing meaningful criteria. Evaluation criteria should be context-specific and collaboratively defined with those affected by the program. The 5Es can serve as a starting point. Here’s how 👇

📲 Introducing WIEGO's Social Security Subsidy Cost Calculator Social security is a human and labour right for all workers, including informal and self-employed workers. However, self-employed workers are often expected to shoulder the entire burden of paying contributions, resulting in affordably high contributions or payments too low to yield adequate benefits. This is a major barrier for the nearly 80% of informal workers in developing countries that are self-employed. The most effective way to address this affordability gap is for governments to subsidize social insurance contributions for (low-income) self-employed workers. Global evidence shows that countries that have managed to significantly expand coverage have recognized this and implemented various forms of subsidies. However, it is difficult to argue for something without having at least a ballpark figure. This simple calculator helps estimate the costs of different subsidy options, as well as the impacts of those on workers' social security benefits. [It's a savings model to keep it simple. OMG YES The added personal trauma that comes with entering the professional stage is huge. The referendum really put it into perspective almost 70% of people DO NOT want to hear an indigenous invoice. This is reflective in the workplace. And it comes down to the bias and systemic structure of the colonial system. Which is pretty much the unwritten rule society follows - White way is the right way. There is a sickening that occurs in my bosy when I witness or think of mob who have been asked to tell their stories of personal trauma and abuse to raise awareness. Usually they stand in front of, on a stage, or in some way separated ( an object to look at) of a mostly white audience are baring their story. The effect on the audience, is shock, sympathy, disbelief angry, surprise etc, much like the curiosities of early colonialism. Does it change practice and processes? I think it may influence policy but getting to change practice is totally different issue. We can change policy with a few words, and stroke of a pen. We can’t change practice so easily. Practice is individually influenced, it is the individuals intent, the individual belief system, the individuals feelings and thoughts and the individuals understanding of their place in the world, that influences they way an individual practices. Therefore for practice to change, individuals have to change. They must be able to challenge their own unwritten rules, ( codes of accepted conduct , like privilege and place) acknowledge and examine their own feelings and behaviours and use their thinking to influence both towards change. Those of us that are advocates for human rights who changing practice we and Let’s look at a few examples. - they dont seem to stay, we are committed to employing Aboriginal people but …,,, They are always a running late……. There is always a family emergency …… How many deaths can in family have? I can never get reports on time…. They don’t speak up at team meetings…,.,, They never want to do acknowledgement of country……,, They have the opportunity to teach other staff about their culture….. Unless they share how are we to know what’s going on in their lives..

Systemic Change Requires Tri-Sector Collaboration When we talk about addressing the major challenges of our time—whether it’s climate justice, economic inequality, or social inequity—we must recognize that no single sector can do it alone. Real, lasting systemic change is not about quick fixes; it’s about fundamentally shifting the structures that perpetuate inequity and injustice. And that requires collaboration across private, public, and social sectors. But what does this actually look like? How do we move from partnership in name only to true collaboration that drives systemic change? Here’s what I believe is essential: 🔑 Recognize the Interconnectedness of Problems and Solutions  Systemic challenges like climate change or racial inequity are deeply interconnected. Solutions require aligning efforts across sectors, with each bringing its unique strengths to the table. The private sector provides innovation and scalability; the public sector offers policy frameworks and accountability; the social sector ensures community voices, equity, and a justice-centered approach. Center Equity and Justice at Every Level For tri-sector partnerships to drive systemic change, equity must be central, not an afterthought. This means designing initiatives that directly address structural barriers and uplift historically marginalized communities. We can’t build solutions that work for everyone if we aren’t intentionally addressing the needs of the most vulnerable. Communities must not just be stakeholders—they must be co-creators of the solutions. 💡 Create a Culture of Co-Ownership and Trust Systemic change requires that all sectors share power, responsibility, and decision-making. Co-ownership and trust are built by being transparent, listening deeply, and fostering long-term relationships. This isn't about short-term wins but about creating a sustainable culture of collaboration where all parties are invested in collective success. 🌍 Focus on Long-Term Vision, Not Just Immediate Outcomes While short-term metrics matter, systemic change is a long game. It’s about reimagining systems that have been broken for generations. In tri-sector partnerships, we need to continuously ask: How is this work laying the foundation for long-term impact? Are we building the structures and relationships that can evolve with the challenges we face? Systemic change is hard, messy, and slow. But when we build tri-sector partnerships that are rooted in equity, driven by community needs, and sustained by trust, we create the conditions for transformative change that goes beyond the surface—and into the heart of the systems that need to evolve.
