With 2024 coming to a close, we are reflecting on accomplishments over the past year. A Community Science program was piloted in 2024, which entailed lending out Water Rangers kits to community volunteers to test water quality and upload results to an open-data platform. A big THANK YOU to our 2024 volunteers! With a donation to the River Institute, you can be a part of supporting the expansion of Community Science programs along the St. Lawrence River. As the River Institute's 30th year comes to an end, we are reflecting on some great memories for #ThrowbackThursday! This Thursday we are going back in time to 2018 when Dr. Leigh McGaughey first joined the team at the River Institute and launched the Great River Rapport Ecosystem Health Report! The public workshops and surveys mentioned in this article were instrumental in informing the selection of the project's 35 ecological indicators. The project has come to encompass more than ever imagined back in 2018. Learn more about the Great River Rapport 👉 https://loom.ly/pF2XMRM

📣New publication announcement! Learn about how constructed ponds in cities can support dragonfly reproduction at similar rates as naturally occurring ponds. These constructed ponds are used to collect runoff and prevent floods in cities but should therefore also be considered as important habitat for wildlife. Authors of this paper includes the River Institute's own Dr. Mary Ann Perron and Dr. Cristina Charette! Collaborators include partners from the University of Illonois, Concordia University, and the University of Ottawa. Read all about it🔗 https://loom.ly/C5rkPxQ

Have you noticed anything new at Rotary Creek recently? Thanks to a grant from the Great Lakes Local Action Fund, two new signs were installed at Rotary Creek this year to highlight the history of the creek and the local biodiversity.🐟 The design and installation of these signs was a partnership between the River Institute, the City of Cornwall, and Watersheds Canada, with art by Catherine Proulx. Also Included in this grant was support for several invasive phragmites removals and planting events in an effort to restore the natural features of Rotary Creek. 🌾 Be sure to check them out on your next walk!🚶
