Canada and the United States share more than 5,000 miles (nearly 9,000 kilometers) of border. Almost half of that is water: as far west as the Yukon River basin, as far reaching as the Great Lakes, and east to the St. Croix River basin. To help Canada and the United States prevent and resolve disputes over the use of the waters they share
About us
The International Joint Commission prevents and resolves disputes between the United States of America and Canada under the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty and pursues the common good of both countries as an independent and objective adviser to the two governments. In particular, the Commission rules upon applications for approval of projects affecting boundary or transboundary waters and may regulate the operation of these projects; it assists the two countries in the protection of the transboundary environment, including the implementation of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the improvement of transboundary air quality; and it alerts the governments to emerging issues along the boundary that may give rise to bilateral disputes.

"We are not surprised that our 2024 poll results show those large majorities are going up. Support for Great Lakes protection was high in 2015 and is even higher 10 years later. And the Great Lakes truly unite us across our differences: There are surprisingly few areas where opinions diverge depending on age, income, and political or ethnic identity.”
