Over the past four months, I have been working as a construction inspector at MTE Consultants, changing it up from my typical role of Civil Designer. This goal was set in collaboration with my manager in January 2024, aiming to enhance my understanding of construction procedures and the entire construction and post-construction process. During this time, I actively engaged with various construction sites on a part-time basis, where I conducted erosion and sediment control inspections, performed final inspections, and worked full-time on select sites. These experiences allowed me to develop valuable skills, particularly in communication, as I interacted with contractors and authored numerous inspection reports. Additionally, I honed my time management skills by juggling all the required site visits and completing the associated paperwork. I am eager to apply this experience as I continue my journey towards obtaining my P.Eng and furthering my understanding of site development processes in the years ahead. Here are a few photos to recap my summer: 1) Selfie for MTE’s site photo contest. 2) Installation of curb with the GPS machine. This was one of the highlights of my time inspecting. 3) Swab test for commissioning of watermain. These swabs are 50mm larger than the pipe which helps clean any debris in the pipe. One of the many steps on sites to ensure the building gets clean drinking water at the end of the day! 4) A remote-control trench packer! This was used to ensure the soils around this new manhole were compacted, while also ensuring the safety of the contractor and their crew.
