Congratulations to The Station at Cochrane Crossing for winning a WoodWorks Prairie Wood Design Award! The Cochrane Transit Hub is a civic gateway for modern transit solutions that maintains a strong connection to the area's transportation heritage. Heavy timber glulam beams form the exposed structural “bones,” of the station, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. Visible through large glass facades, the timber beams extend past the building envelope to connect with surrounding plazas, uniting the building with its public spaces. Wood, brick, and glass elements combine to create a dynamic, accessible transit hub that pays homage to Cochrane’s roots while promoting movement and connection. Congrats to the Science Collaboration Centre at Chalk River, Ontario, awarded a WoodWorks Ontario Award! Overlooking the Ottawa River Valley, this six-storey mass timber building is a collaborative hub for nuclear science, with flexible office and meeting spaces, an auditorium, library, rooftop terrace, and data center. Using Integrated Project Delivery, the design team created a resilient, sustainable facility that meets federal net-zero carbon readiness standards. The Centre bridges both spaces and scientific communities, setting a new standard for innovation on campus. Congratulations to Mohegan Trail, recipient of a Wood Design & Building Honor Award. Perched on a coastal bluff, this island home was crafted to withstand harsh storms and navigate the logistical challenges of its remote location. With materials transported by passenger ferry, lightweight construction and adaptability were essential. Strategically through-bolted framing anchors the structure against high winds, while cedar shakes and exposed framing lend a raw, sturdy aesthetic. Inspired by traditional Northeastern architecture, Mohegan Trail balances simplicity and durability, setting a high standard for resilient coastal design. Sustainably sourced wood is central to the design, with flitch beams supporting wide spans and Western red cedar cladding the ceilings, soffits, and entryway screen. This cedar screen gently filters light, casting dynamic shadows throughout the day. Inside, the warm red cedar ceiling, paired with white oak floors and maple walls, creates a cozy glow at dusk—a welcoming retreat in the woods.
