Senators urge pilot retirement age rise as experience leads to fewer accidents In the letter published on November 20, 2024, lead signee Senator Marsha Blackburn and her colleagues said that data supported the argument that “experienced pilots have fewer accidents than junior pilots”. According to the letter, the ICAO recently “advanced formal action directed at raising or even eliminating the institution’s recommended pilot retirement age of 65 years” at the 14th Air Navigation Conference. When an aircraft experiences undercarriage damage or runs on rims, it can block the runway, leading to safety concerns and delays in airport operations. This poses a serious challenge for timely aircraft recovery. In a significant regulatory action, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) has fined Air Canada $250,000 for operating flights over prohibited Iraqi airspace. This penalty underscores the stringent measures in place to ensure aviation safety and compliance with international airspace regulations. The violations occurred between October 2022 and January 2023. During this period, Air Canada operated flights through restricted Iraqi airspace under its codeshare agreement with United Airlines. In a written statement to Parliament, the UK Foreign Secretary (David Lammy) has announced the suspension of certain export licences to Israel. “around 30” of the 350 export licences granted to Israel have been suspended including aircraft components and components that facilitate air to ground targeting. Lammy emphasised that this “is not a blanket ban” nor is it “an arms embargo” and the government will continually review its position. The UK’s Export Control Joint Unit (“ECJU”) has published a notice summarising the licences suspended and the impact on exporters, who will be contacted by the ECJU to confirm the decision. The ECJU has also amended the following open general licences: open general export licence (exports in support of Joint Strike Fighter: F-35 Lightning II); open general export licence PCBs and components for military goods; open general export licence technology for military goods; open general export licence software and source code for military goods; open general trade control licence for category C goods; and open general trade control licence trade and transportation: small arms and light weapons. [FREE TO READ] "Fume events" are underreported, with a spokesperson for the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) explaining that dangerous and potentially deadly #fumes on aircraft, especially older planes, are a much bigger problem than anyone realises. “The AFAP would like to see the Civil Aviation Safety Authority take this issue more seriously, including insisting that high-grade air filters be made mandatory for all commercial airliners flying in Australia, and that bleed air systems are redesigned in future aircraft. We should also see appropriate and accurate testing of fumes in aircraft cabins.” Fume events are the result of the long-term design flaw that sees bleed air mixed into cabin air across most aircraft makers, including Boeing and Airbus ... After a fume event on a Qantas National Jet Systems #B717 last year, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau found that airborne contaminants “may result in the rapid onset of incapacitation, which although possibly subtle, can significantly affect the safety of flight”. “Contaminants from bleed air may be being inhaled unknowingly. #ICAO80 in Photos 📸 The First Session of ICAO Assembly was held in Montréal, Canada, from 6 to 27 May 1947. It brought together representatives from various countries to lay the groundwork for aviation standards, regulations, and cooperation among nations in the aftermath of World War II. What is the ICAO Assembly? The ICAO Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the International Civil Aviation Organization. It usually meets once every three years and is composed of representatives from all ICAO Member States. It serves as a forum for discussing key issues concerning international civil aviation, including safety, air navigation, environmental sustainability, and regulatory standards. Besides reviewing topical Working papers and major issues, Assemblies also elect the ICAO Council States and establish ICAO's budget and work programme for three-year periods. It does this by adopting Resolutions and by taking appropriate action on the reports of the Council and any matters reported to it by the Council. The 42nd Assembly will take place in the fall of 2025.

Following a bird strike that led to an engine fire shortly after taking off from Queenstown, New Zealand, the Boeing 737-800 jet was skillfully diverted, ensuring the safety of all on board. This incident is yet another example to highlight the critical need for effective wildlife hazard management plans to enhance aviation safety. Proactive measures and comprehensive hazard management strategies are essential to prevent such occurrences and safeguard both passengers and crew. Following a bird strike, there's a comprehensive investigation process that may not be widely known. The incident is reported to aviation authorities and wildlife teams. Evidence like bird remains or "snarge" is collected and identified, sometimes with airport biologists' help or DNA testing. The aircraft is assessed for damage, and wildlife management plans are reviewed and improved to prevent future incidents.
