  • India’s #helicopter sector is set for significant growth as the Ministry of Civil Aviation unveils new #plans to enhance the industry’s operational and #service capabilities. At the recent Heli Power India 2024 conference, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu proposed developing a #network of over 50 Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) units along #national highways and expressways, aiming to make #helicopters a critical part of India’s healthcare #infrastructure. This #initiative would enable rapid airlifts for patients in remote areas, drastically reducing response times and expanding access to quality #healthcare—an opportunity Edge Aviation is excited to support by offering #safe, reliable air ambulance #services. Additionally, the Ministry is establishing a #helicopter accelerator cell to streamline regulatory processes and support the sector’s #growth. The accelerator will simplify decision-making and gather industry expertise, benefiting operators like Edge Aviation by enhancing #efficiency and ensuring higher standards in #commercial and #emergency helicopter operations. The creation of dedicated helicopter corridors and a regulatory #framework specifically for helicopters marks another major #step forward. This will reduce delays, #enhance safety, and simplify the complex air traffic systems currently navigated by helicopter operators. For Edge Aviation, these #developments mean improved access to airspace, faster permit approvals, and a smoother, more predictable service for our #clients. “Edge Aviation views these government initiatives as game-changers for the helicopter industry, paving the way for growth in emergency response, healthcare, and private charters. We’re ready to lead in this evolving landscape and are committed to delivering excellence in helicopter services that enhance connectivity and accessibility across India.” Shweta Salunkhe Co-founder, Edge Aviation.

  • India’s #air travel #market with the #UK is set for significant #expansion following a revised air #services agreement between the two nations. The new #agreement, established in May, allows #airlines from both countries to increase flights from 56 to 70 per week between London Heathrow and key #Indian hubs such as #Delhi and #Mumbai. This #boost comes as demand for travel between the two countries surges, fueled by a combination of #tourism, #business, and a sizable Indian diaspora in the UK. The revised agreement is expected to intensify #competition among airlines looking to capture the lucrative India-UK market. Both British Airways and Air India are positioning themselves to capitalize on this #opportunity. British Airways, which currently operates 56 weekly flights from Heathrow to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, #Chennai, and #Hyderabad, has already announced plans to introduce a new daily flight from Delhi to Heathrow starting in April next year. This addition will bring the airline’s total weekly flights to #India to 63, further cementing its presence in one of its most #profitable markets. The UK, particularly London, remains a prime #destination for Indian #travelers. The British capital is home to one of the largest Indian communities outside India, making it a popular choice for both leisure and #business travel. Additionally, London’s status as a global financial hub and its cultural appeal attract a large volume of Indian tourists and business #professionals. With the increased flight capacity, passengers will benefit from greater flexibility and more choices when #planning their journeys between the two countries. The surge in #air traffic between India and the UK reflects broader #trends in the #global travel market, as the demand for #international travel rebounds in the wake of the #pandemic. As more flights are added and competition heats up, travelers can expect improved services, competitive #pricing, and increased #availability of direct flights. Both Air India and British Airways are likely to further ramp up operations to stay ahead in what is becoming a fiercely contested market. With the revised air #services agreement, this expansion sets the stage for enhanced #connectivity and convenience for travelers on both sides. "The expansion of air travel between India and the UK is a fantastic development, not only for frequent flyers but for businesses like mine that thrive on seamless global connectivity. As a player in the helicopter charter industry, I see this as an opportunity to bridge the gap between major airports and more remote destinations, offering travelers a luxurious, time-saving alternative. With more flights connecting India and the UK, the potential for partnerships and expansion of services catering to business executives, tourists, and high-net-worth individuals will only grow." • As India’s #aviation sector experiences unprecedented growth, GE #Aerospace is strategically increasing its #component sourcing from the #country to support both its commercial and #defense programs. With a well-established presence in #India through a manufacturing facility in #Pune and the John F. Welch Technology Centre in #Bengaluru, GE Aerospace has already cultivated #partnerships with 13 major Indian suppliers, including Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL). Mahendra Nair, Group Vice President for Commercial Programs at GE Aerospace, emphasized the importance of India’s role in their #global supply chain. "We have got some very capable companies in India with the right engineering talent and production footprint," Nair said. "As long as they meet our technical standards, the potential for growth is enormous." With India’s aviation #market expanding rapidly, Nair sees continued sourcing from India as a #logical next step to keep pace with #demand. Vikram Rai, South Asia CEO of GE Aerospace, highlighted a significant rise in sourcing from India, which increased 20-fold between 2018 and 2022. Despite the promising #expansion, Rai noted ongoing #global supply chain #challenges, with a projected recovery still two years away. "Demand on the supply chain is growing 25 percent annually, and even in today’s constrained environment, we are delivering 25 percent more than last year," Nair added. In partnership with Safran Aircraft Engines, GE Aerospace’s CFM joint venture produces LEAP engines that power many of India’s narrow-body aircraft, a fleet that now relies on over 1,300 #engines from GE and CFM. Beyond #commercial aviation, GE Aerospace plays a crucial role in India’s defense sector, with its engines powering the Indian Air Force’s Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mk1, helicopters, and naval vessels. The #company employs approximately 3,000 people in India, underscoring its long-term commitment to the region. GE’s GEnx commercial engines, which power Boeing wide-body #aircraft, recently achieved a significant milestone of two million flight hours with South Asian carriers, with Air India Group alone accounting for over 90 percent of these hours. “As India’s aviation market continues to soar, GE Aerospace is well-positioned to capitalize on this growth through increased local partnerships and an expanded supply chain footprint.” Shweta Salunkhe Co-founder, Edge Aviation.

  • India is set to lead the #world in #electric air taxis by 2026, according to Nikhil Goel, Chief Commercial Officer of Archer Aviation. The California-based company, which specializes in electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft, is introducing its 4-seater Midnight #airtaxi in India. Capable of carrying four passengers and a pilot for up to 160 kilometers, the electric air taxi offers a quieter, #emissionfree alternative to traditional helicopters, designed to ease urban congestion and improve mobility. Archer has partnered with InterGlobe Enterprises, the parent company of IndiGo, India’s largest #airline, to help launch its air taxi #services. By replicating IndiGo’s #successful model of scaling operations to reduce costs, Archer aims to make air taxi services more #affordable. The company initially plans to target passengers using IndiGo, especially for #airport transfers, leveraging the airline's massive customer base of 9 million #passengers monthly. Goel emphasized India’s potential to become the largest #market for air taxis, citing strong support from India’s civil #aviation regulator, the DGCA. The DGCA is working on policies to regulate air taxis and #develop vertical ports for landing and takeoff. Archer is also in the process of securing final certification from the FAA in the U.S. to begin carrying passengers #globally. “The idea of having quite intriguing, eco-friendly air taxis zipping people around the city is a game-changer. It’s going to open up so many opportunities, not just for faster commutes but also for luxury and business travelers who want convenience without the environmental impact. I can see these becoming a natural extension of our current services, offering a seamless experience for those who value time and sustainability.” Shweta Salunkhe Co-founder, Edge Aviation.

  • India's Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry is set for significant #growth, with projections indicating that the sector could expand from $2 billion to $4 billion within the next seven years. Civil #Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu announced in the Lok Sabha that the #government is actively facilitating this expansion by implementing a uniform #GST rate of 5% on aircraft parts, components, and testing equipment. This move is expected to make it more appealing for both #domestic and #international airlines to invest in India’s MRO services. The government’s focus on developing the MRO industry is part of a broader strategy to transform #India into a #global aviation hub. In addition to tax incentives, the government is extending support for setting up MRO facilities, including those with airstrips or airports, and has introduced new guidelines to streamline operations. This #initiative is in line with the rapid growth of India's aviation sector, which has seen domestic #airlines place orders for over 1,100 new aircraft in the past decade. Key policy measures include extending the #export period for goods imported for repairs from six months to one year, increasing the time limit for re-importing goods under warranty from three to five years, and reducing GST on MRO #services from 18% to 5%. The government has also allowed 100% #Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through the automatic route for MROs, exempted customs duty on tools, and simplified parts clearance processes, making it easier for #businesses to operate in this sector. "The government's push to enhance the MRO industry is a promising development for the entire aviation sector, including private helicopter operators like us. Simplified regulations and tax incentives will not only drive growth but also ensure that we have access to high-quality, cost-effective maintenance services within India. This initiative will significantly boost operational efficiency and contribute to the overall development of the industry." Shweta Salunkhe Co-founder, Edge Aviation.

  • India's #aviation sector is poised for significant growth with air passenger traffic expected to rise by 8-11% year-over-year, reaching around 407-418 million in the current fiscal year, according to ICRA. This surge is driven by increased leisure and #business travel, improved connectivity to new domestic destinations, and a continued uptick in #international travel. In the previous fiscal year, passenger traffic had already reached 376.4 million, marking a 15% year-over-year increase and surpassing pre-Covid levels by 10%. Vinay Kumar G, Vice President & Sector Head, Corporate Ratings at ICRA, highlighted the strength of India's recovery compared to #global trends. "#India accounted for 4.2% of the global passenger traffic in CY2023, up from 3.8% in CY2019. While global passenger traffic recovered to 96% of pre-pandemic levels, Indian traffic soared to 106% due to strong economic growth and new airport routes," he said. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has streamlined the regulatory framework, significantly reducing delays in tariff order implementation. Progress has also been made in resolving issues such as cost of equity, forex losses, and the treatment of real estate income. The gap between proposed and approved capital expenditures has narrowed to around 10% in the third control period from 25-30% in the first two periods. ICRA projects that #airport operators' revenues will grow by 15-17% year-over-year in FY2025, driven by increased passenger traffic and non-aeronautical revenues. Kumar emphasized that despite higher interest expenses and debt repayments associated with #capital expenditure programs, airport operators are expected to maintain healthy debt coverage metrics, supported by strong #profitability and robust liquidity. “The anticipated growth and improved connectivity signal a robust demand for air travel, which presents substantial opportunities for our industry as well. Increased passenger traffic often leads to greater interest in diversified air travel solutions, including private charters.” Shweta Salunkhe Co-founder, Edge Aviation.

This marks the international debut of the airline's flagship aircraft, making #AirIndia the sole carrier to operate the A350 between #India and #Dubai. The A350-900, adorned in Air India's striking new livery, was welcomed with fervor at both Delhi and Dubai #airports. Pre-departure festivities added to the excitement, with guests receiving special A350 memorabilia to commemorate this historic occasion. At #DubaiInternationalAirport, the ceremonial lamp was lit by Mr. Satish Kumar Sivan, Consul General of India in Dubai, along with Mr. Jamal Al Hai, Deputy CEO of Dubai Airports, and Mr. Mohammed Abdulla Lengawi, Director General of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority. Its advanced aerodynamics and fuel-efficient #engines reduce carbon emissions, aligning with Air India’s commitment to #sustainability. As travelers soar across the skies, they can appreciate the harmony between #performance and environmental responsibility. Air India’s A350 deployment is part of a broader fleet overhaul.
