2023 was one of the worst years for wildfires in the EU in over two decades.     🔴 Forest fires affected more than 500,000 hectares of natural lands,  🔴 The 🇬🇷 Alexandroupolis region fire was the largest single wildfire on record in the EU,  🔴 ‘Megafires’, impossible to control with traditional means, are becoming more common.    The increased frequency and intensity of wildfires is an evident effect of climate change, which is driving extended fire seasons and causing fires in areas that were not usually affected.     Although 2024 saw a downturn in EU wildfires, damage remains above the 10-year average.       We must continue to work to improve our resilience and response to wildfires, and take action to tackle climate change → https://europa.eu/!KyvRhh    #EuropeanUnion

    • A map of Europe titled "Wildfires in Europe 2023," showing wildfire activity as coloured dots of varying sizes to represent the area burned. Larger dots indicate larger areas burned: purple for ≥5000 hectares, red for 1000–5000 hectares, pink for 500–1000 hectares, orange for 100–500 hectares, and yellow for ≤100 hectares. High concentrations of wildfires are visible in southern Europe, particularly in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Turkey, as well as parts of Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean region. Sparse activity is observed in northern Europe. The data is sourced from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).

Merci 🇫🇷, obrigado 🇵🇹!    #EUSolidarity means standing together when it matters most.    After Spain activated the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism in response to devastating floods, Portugal and France swiftly stepped in to help.    🤝 Over 150 team members and 60 vehicles joined forces with Spanish authorities, working tirelessly to clear streets of debris, pump out water and mud, remove vehicles, and transport rubble.    This is EU solidarity at its best. ©️ European Union (footage by Spanish Civil Protection and ANEPC)

    • A large assembly of rescue teams and emergency responders lined up for a group photo. The teams are wearing uniforms of various colors, representing different organizations and nations. Flags of Spain, Portugal, and the European Union are displayed prominently. Emergency vehicles, including trucks and ambulances, are parked in the background
    • A civil protection worker in a blue European Union Civil Protection shirt observes a construction vehicle clearing debris. A firefighter operates the muddy excavator, and another person in black attire stands next to the observer, all engaged in post-disaster recovery.
    • Rescue workers in helmets and reflective uniforms working in a flood-stricken area beneath a damaged bridge. The muddy floodwaters are filled with debris, including large piles of tree branches, uprooted vegetation, and trash caught against the bridge supports. Nearby, a car is partially submerged and surrounded by rocks and tires washed up by the flood.
    • Two emergency responders in uniforms are analyzing a large map displayed on a wall. One, wearing a yellow high-visibility vest with emergency insignia, points to specific areas on the map while holding additional detailed maps. The other, wearing a dark uniform with an EU emblem, observes attentively. A secondary map labeled "DELIMITACIÓN DANA" is visible on the wall in the background. This setting appears to be part of a coordinated emergency planning or disaster response effort.
