Reflecting the culmination of an 18-month collaboration with the Griffith Institute for Tourism and EarthCheck, Etheridge Shire Council has reached a significant milestone in sustainable tourism, becoming the first remote and rural council in Queensland to achieve Silver Certification under the EarthCheck Sustainable Destination Standard. GIFT Director, Professor Sarah Gardiner says, “Collaborating with communities like Etheridge Shire is at the heart of our mission at the Griffith Institute for Tourism. This week, in partnership with the UNIC Canberra and the European Union, we hosted the DISINFO Pacific Conference at our South Bank Campus, bringing critical attention to the issue of information integrity in the Australia-Pacific region. With keynote speaker Melissa Fleming, UN Under Secretary General for Global Communications, and Tanya Plibersek, Minister for the Environment and Water, as well as an impressive panel of experts, the event tackled the growing impact of misinformation on democracy, public health, and climate action. Through collaborative discussions and practical solutions, policymakers, researchers, and students united to address how we can build resilience against disinformation in our communities. It's official, our #GriffithMBA Program has ranked first in the 2024 Corporate Knights Better World MBA rankings for the fifth year in a row, topping 174 programs around the world 🎇 🙌 The ranking recognised MBA programs which worked to build a more inclusive economy, while benefiting society and the natural world. Last Saturday night, Professor Duncan McDonnell from the School of Government and International Relations shared the stage with Rory Stewart—former diplomat, cabinet minister, explorer, and acclaimed writer—for an evening of candid dialogue on the state of our world and democracy. The event titled ‘Rory Stewart - Politics on the Edge’, saw Rory recounted his unique journey: from political outsider to Cabinet minister and ultimately, to standing in as acting prime minister before departing from a party he no longer recognised. From managing flood responses and prison violence to addressing Brexit and poverty overseas, Rory has seen firsthand the challenges and shortcomings that define our current political systems. His insights into the world order, populism, and the inner workings of government resonated powerfully with the audience, exploring themes in his Sunday Times #1 bestseller, Politics On The Edge. This week a group of dedicated GBS Student Leaders from our Gold Coast, Nathan and Digital campus joined forces to make a difference. As part of their commitment to community service, these students #volunteered with FareShare Australia, one of the country's largest non-profit kitchens, helping prepare over 3,000 nutritious meals for people in need. Now in its fourth year, the Little Spark Project is a highlight of the GBS Student Leadership Program, inspiring students to think creatively about supporting communities facing various challenges. In a significant step towards advancing gender equality in sport, Griffith University’s Sport and Gender Equity (SAGE) research group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport. This international partnership will foster collaborative research and knowledge exchange, strengthening efforts to empower women and girls through physical education, physical activity, and sport. Griffith University’s iconic bridge is glowing pink this week in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Have you spotted the pink lights yet? Although usually a distinct shade of powerful red, the bridge has spent each October — which is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month— since 2008 turning pink. Driven by Griffith Business School academic and National Breast Cancer Foundation Ambassador Dr Robyn Cameron, the lighting switch has become a key visual ally in continuing to raise awareness of the disease, which remains responsible for nine Australians dying from breast cancer every day. “National Breast Cancer Foundation statistics show that breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia,” said Dr Cameron. Every year over 21,000 people in Australia (including around 200 men) will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Around 1,000 of those diagnosed are women aged under 40. That is about 3 women under 40 years old diagnosed every day. So, it remains crucial that we not lose sight of the work to be done in combatting this disease. “I am proud to be able to play a part in the fight for awareness and funding by making our already-stunning Smith Street bridge even more eye-catching." Since its inception in 1994, the NBCF has invested over $200 million into more than 600 world-class research projects across Australia.
