VISITING SCHOLAR AND BOOK LAUNCH | On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of co-hosting visiting scholars Lesley Wood from North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit and Eileen Piggot-Irvine from Auckland University of Technology at Griffith, alongside the Griffith Institute for Educational Research. The visiting scholars, along with our GCI member Sara Branch (PhD), delivered a workshop on the topic of "Bridging the Practice-Theory Divide in Higher Education Using Action Research". Following the workshop, we celebrated the launch of the book 'Shaping the Future of Higher Education: Positive and Sustainable Frameworks for Navigating Constant Change, edited by Lesley Wood and Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt'. Commentary on the book was provided by Bill Synnot from Bill Synnot and Associates. We would like to congratulate Lesley Wood and Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt on the launch of their book. LAUNCH EVENT | Join the inaugural Asia-Pacific Society for Prevention Research (APSPR) conference on Thursday, 21 November, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The society aims to foster collaboration on prevention science and research across the Asia-Pacific region, with a mission to advance research on the aetiology and prevention of health and behavioural issues. APSPR seeks to support and encourage collaboration among prevention researchers, students, practitioners, and policymakers to create new opportunities for knowledge sharing and to raise the profile of prevention activities. HDR CONFIRMATION | Congratulations to Joanne Papageorgiou who successfully completed her HDR confirmation last week. Her PhD title was "Under the Influence: Identifying Typologies of Violent Offenders in the Night-Time Economy and their Social and Economic impact". Supervisors Dominique De Andrade Carleen Thompson Molly McCarthy, PhD. Alcohol-related violence within the night-time economy (NTE) continues to pose challenges within the community. Night-Time Entertainment Precincts (NEPs) characterised by high concentrations of licensed venues, foster conditions where impaired judgment, increased aggression and a likelihood of violent incidents are prevalent. As a result, NEPs experience a disproportionate number of violent assaults, straining public health and criminal justice systems. My research will assess the effectiveness of current individual-level interventions aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm. It will identify violent offending trajectories in Queensland’s Safe-Night Precincts (SNPs), focusing on distinct patterns of offending and linking these trajectories to relevant datasets, such as healthcare and law enforcement. Additionally, it will conduct an economic evaluation on the costs associated with these violent behaviours, highlighting the financial burden violence has on the community. HDR CONFIRMATION | Congratulations to Sally Brewer who successfully completed her HDR confirmation yesterday. Her PhD title was 'Unpacking Withdrawals of Sexual Consent in an Australian Context'. Supervisors Danielle Reynald, Associate Professor Danielle Harris and Dr James Ogilvie. Withdrawals of sexual consent are a key component in consent legislation and policies addressing sexual violence in Australia, yet there is limited empirical research on how people perceive and navigate withdrawals of consent during a sexual encounter. A withdrawal of consent occurs after someone revokes sexual consent after initially providing [implicit or explicit] consent. Existing empirical findings demonstrate that most Australians find it difficult to navigate sexual consent in practice, which becomes even more convoluted when considering withdrawals. Persistent sexual behaviour that occurs following a withdrawal of sexual consent constitutes a violation of consent and additional information is needed to explore how people navigate and respond to withdrawals. Although post-withdrawal violations of consent are being recognised legally and publicly, it is still an under-researched ‘grey’ area in the extant literature on sexual violence. This thesis will explore knowledge, perceptions, and reflections of times where an individual’s consent withdrawal was violated from the perspectives of both the perpetrator of the persistent behaviour and victim survivor. The impact of post-withdrawal persistence (and whether this makes someone more or less likely to withdraw consent in future) will also be explored in detail. The aim of this research is to provide a deeper understanding of the process of consent withdrawals (how and why they occur), the circumstances of post-withdrawal persistence, and the identification of barriers to withdrawing consent. VISITING SCHOLAR | Last month GCI and GCI member Silke Meyer had the pleasure of hosting visiting researcher Anne Coomans, who is currently completing her PhD at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR). The purpose of the visit was to conduct interviews for a qualitative analysis between victim-survivor experiences of domestic violence, help-seeking and access to support in the Netherlands and Southeast Queensland during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of her visit, she presented a webinar to the GCI community this week on her broader PhD project, which focuses on trends and mechanisms contributing to domestic violence, in particular in the context of the pandemic. NEW ARTICLE | Recent media and political attention on so-called youth crime waves, particularly in Queensland and the Northern Territory, has unfortunately led to government and police crackdowns, with curfews imposed on young people in areas like Alice Springs. However, a recent evaluation highlights a more effective approach. Findings revealed that a preschool program reduced the number of young people appearing in court by more than 50%. When paired with robust family support, the likelihood of youth involvement in crime decreased even further. This reinforces the importance of early intervention and community support in creating lasting, positive change.
