Business News recently discussed the future of the Henderson precinct with Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia – a dedicated defence shipbuilding and maintenance hub in the existing industrial area of Henderson.   The precinct’s expansion underscores a growing issue in WA: a scarcity of available industrial land. To support this ambitious project and the expected influx of workers, there is an urgent need for more industrial and residential land to be released to the market.   Demand for land is already high in the Western Trade Coast – Cygnet West has recently sold over $168 million worth of property in the area across vacant land lots and developed workshops. The unsatisfied demand for larger lots (minimum one hectare), highlights a robust market eager for further opportunities.   The release of additional land to meet the surging demand will be a highly anticipated and essential step, supporting not only the expanding needs of the Henderson precinct but also benefiting existing WA businesses eager for industrial space. Last week, SDA posted a notice to #industry to allow for planning ahead of Tranche 3 competitive opportunities. SDA’s Tranche 3 programs will provide sustained capability with advanced improvements over Tranche 2 plus future #warfighting applications. More specifically, Tranche 3 Transport Layer (T3TL) serves to advance the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture’s (#PWSA) Data Transport and Navigation capabilities with three mission-specific variants that each serve multiple capabilities. SDA expects to release the first T3TL draft solicitation in early second quarter of fiscal year 2025 for the T3TL Upsilon variant and a final T2TL Upsilon solicitation early in the 3rd quarter; we expect to make up to two awards for this variant. Additional solicitations will include the T3TL Sigma variant and T3TL Lambda variant, with both variants anticipating up to two awards. Eligible Australian businesses can begin preparing an application to any of the four streams which include Sovereign Industrial Priorities, Exports, Skilling, and Security. The Defence Industry Development Grant program provides up to $39 million per year until mid-2028 to support small or medium sized Australian businesses operating in the defence sector to enhance their capabilities, capacity and security posture. In a few weeks, the Australian Defence Industry will come together at Land Forces International Land Forces International Land Defence Exposition 2024. For some, they will have attended many of these shows and for others, this will be the first time. It is important to have a robust plan when visiting exhibitions like Land Forces, however more importantly, it is necessary to understand why you are attending and what it is you deliver to your potential customer. If you are a supplier or manufacturer, ask yourself why the soldier would want your equipment in the field over someone else's. Soldiers don't care about cost, they care about ease of use, how much does it weigh on top of all the other kit I am already carrying, how long will it last before I need to resupply it, or can I give it to my 18 year old new recruit and trust they can use it without blowing their own hand off. If your equipment performs well in a lab, take it outside into the bush for a few days and see how it performs then. Operational Test and Evaluation (OT&E) is crucial to field any new equipment, and you want to know what you are proposing is going to past the test. When you are at the conference, take time to talk to the soldiers walking around the show. Generals and Colonels are important as they are the decision makers, but the Diggers are the ones that have to use it, and their feedback is paramount to delivering capability. AWARD WINNER! 🏆 PSM Upstream Solutions Engineered Crates, Safer Roads 🥇 We are the proud AWARD WINNER of this years Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety WorkSafe WA Work Health and Safety Excellence Awards 2024 in the ‘Best solution to a work health and safety risk' category for our Engineered Structural Preservation Crates. When we founded PSM in 2016 and started preserving, storing, maintaining and packaging critical spares for the resource industry. we quickly came across a problem. Crates that the spares arrived in were substandard, presenting a major HSE risk to those having to handle the damaged crates. We also have learned that there are thousands of incidents on our roads every year, with cargo falling off trucks and putting the lives of the general public in danger. First, we tried to find a supplier of wooden crates that could supply structurally sound crates with a guaranteed Working Load Limit (WLL). To our big surprise, there were none. Realising we had to do this ourselves, we embarked on a journey of engineering, research and development, testing and prototyping to come up with a timber crate that complies with the National Transport Commission’s design guidelines, as well as AS1720.1, the Australian Timber Structures Code. By engineering the design of the crates, taking into account the weight, dimensions, Centre of Gravity (CoG), friction factors and load distribution of the asset on the crate base, we can guarantee a Working Load Limit (WLL) of each crate we manufacture. Lashing points are clearly marked on the outside of the crate to make use of the structural strength of the crate, and anchor points are added internally to securely strap the asset to the crate base. Crates are manufactured using structural timber for all load bearing parts and non-structural timber for all non-critical parts, to keep the costs down. We also issue a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) with each crate, guaranteeing the strength, durability and Working Load Limit (WLL) of our product. We have even thought about re-use by using screws and latches when assembling the crates. Why throw away a perfectly good crate when you can use it again and again over a ten year design life? But most importantly, we have come up with a product that significantly reduces the HSE risk of handling and transporting goods on our roads, keeping people in logistics, transportation, maintenance, as well as the general public out of harm’s way. And that can only be a good thing. FORGING A FRAMEWORK FOR A CAREER IN SHIPBUILDING Introducing Keaton, a welder, a footy fan, and this year’s SA Apprentice of the Year. Our apprenticeship program is not just about getting hands-on experience, it’s also about building a cohort of people to play their part in sustaining Australia’s submarines. Keaton was nominated for SA’s Apprentice of the Year by team leader, Adam, who says “it was his work ethic and strong relationships that stood out to me.” Let’s hear from Keaton: What’s it like being the shipbuilding industry? “It’s pretty cool to work on submarines every day, while you could do a welding job at lots of places, there’s nothing like working on a sub.” How did it feel to have formal recognition of your work? “I’m proud, but at the end of the day it’s a team effort. It’s important to remember that it takes lots of people with different skills to complete the job.” Do you have any advice for people thinking about an apprenticeship? “Give it a go. CEO Projects at Hancock Prospecting, Sanjiv Manchanda was on hand at the official opening of the upgraded Marble Bar Airport, which will provide greater flexibility to our people, as well as provide improved infrastructure for the local community.
