The Toughest News from Australia in 2024! Reserve Bank of Australia Reports $2.8 Billion Accounting Loss for 2024. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has found itself in a challenging financial position, reporting a $2.8 billion accounting loss—marking the fourth consecutive year of losses. But what’s causing these losses? > Low-interest pandemic-era bond purchases are yielding less income than the interest payments the RBA owes to commercial banks. > This has led to cumulative losses that have wiped out its equity, leaving the RBA with a negative equity position of A$20.4 billion. What does this mean for Australia and beyond? 🔸 For Australia: The RBA’s financial strain limits its ability to respond to future economic challenges, potentially impacting national economic stability. 🔸 Globally: This loss might raise questions among international investors about Australia’s economic health, potentially affecting investment inflows and currency stability. 【港企欲擴張 招聘意向5年高】 CPA Australia: Hong Kong Firms Plan Expansion as Hiring Intentions Hit Five-Year High 澳洲會計師公會調查顯示，2025年香港的經濟前景和商業信心將進一步改善，超過一半受訪人士預期他們的公司明年收入將呈增長，在擴展計劃上亦變得更積極，招聘意向達至2020年以來最高水平；另有62%受訪者預計明年會加薪。 CPA Australia conducted a survey on Hong Kong's economic and business outlook from October to November 2024, interviewing a total of 568 Hong Kong executives, accountants and financial market professionals. Interviewees were generally relatively optimistic about the economy in 2025. Over half of respondents expect their companies to see revenue growth next year and have adopted a more aggressive stance on expansion plans. Hiring intentions have reached their highest level since 2020, reflecting a renewed optimism in the market. Additionally, 62% of respondents anticipate salary increases in the coming year, further underscoring the positive sentiment surrounding Hong Kong’s economic recovery. Why are so many finance functions in such a poor state? I hear horror stories from candidates on the daily on the kinds of finance functions they are inheriting. I'm hearing about basic stuff like the ATO asset and liability accounts being unreconciled with massive differences going back years, issues with stock carrying values and issues with lease accounting and revenue recognition. I had an issue once where the client was a large Pty Limited for several years but had no idea they needed to be audited. What do you think is the reason for this? Under-resourcing, poorly trained staff, poor technical screening of candidates when they join? Love to hear your thoughts because poor performance and poor compliance is at epidemic proportions.
