🎯 5 Tips for Finding Finance and Accounting Talent in a Tight Market 🎯 Have you noticed how tough it’s become to find top finance and accounting talent in Melbourne lately? Do you find yourself competing for candidates with in-demand skills like financial analysis, compliance, and strategic planning? Over the past 6 to 12 months, I’ve seen the market tighten significantly. While demand is skyrocketing, the supply of qualified professionals just isn’t keeping up. When you find a skilled and suitable candidate you have to act quickly to secure them for your vacancy otherwise they’ll get snapped up elsewhere. Here are 5 tips I’ve found effective recently: 1. Widen Your Search Don’t fixate on the perfect résumé. Look for candidates with transferable skills who can grow into the role with some training. 2. Engage Passive Talent The best candidates aren’t always looking. Use networking, referrals, and meaningful conversations to connect with them and their network. 3. Showcase Growth Opportunities Candidates want more than a job—they want career growth, flexibility, and a strong company culture. Highlight these benefits upfront. 4. Upskill Your Team When hiring externally is tough, invest in developing your current employees with certifications or targeted training. 5. Tap Into Global Talent if possible. Melbourne’s appeal makes it a top destination for international professionals. Expand your search globally to find fresh talent. 🌟 What’s Next? Recruiting in a talent-short market isn’t easy, but it’s an opportunity to get creative and strategic. What trends have you noticed in Melbourne’s job market?

Let me tell you a quick story. I was recently helping an amazing CFO with his job hunting. He was beyond frustrated with not being able to have a conversation about the majority of the opportunities he applied for, the main reason being industry experience. He explained to me then that he didn't get the judgement: "I work in finance, one of the most transferrable industry skillsets out there. I've got so much to offer." I agreed with him and explained that the current market is too risk-averse and that most employers are unwilling to take the risk, even if you're the best candidate. We talked about how poor some hiring decisions have been for companies, seemingly because they only hire from competitors or the same industry. Anyways, role on a few months. He secured a role in the same industry he's worked in for the last few years. He called me asking if I could help him recruit a role in his new team. I said of course. We started discussing the opportunity and guess what? That's right! He asked that the candidates come from the same industry. I gently reminded him about his own journey, to which he responded, "This is different, though. Industry experience is essential." I pushed back but he wasn't having any of it. I respected his decision and continued with the brief. Hiring Managers - You are the ones who control this. Not your company, you. There's some incredible finance talent out there. Open up and have a chat with them. ------ I'm Richard, Co-Founder of HPR, a 5-star rated Accounting and Finance recruiter in Sydney. For the best finance talent, please reach out. A career in finance and accounting is perceived to be the most secure in the world. It’s also commonly known in Asia as the “ironclad bowl”. This is because every company, regardless of size, needs an accountant to record and monitor its financial books. However, it’s difficult for finance professionals and accountants to stand out from the crowd when they are searching for jobs. Most of them have similar qualifications, certifications and experience using similar tools and software for work. This is why employers look for the X factor that differentiates one from all the other job applicants, such as someone who has a very strong professional profile. This is why more and more accounting and finance professionals are using marketing and personal branding strategies to build distinct online and offline identities to appeal to potential employers. #personalbranding #leadershipdevelopment #success #successmindset
