📢 Q4 Finance & Accounting update As we enter Q4, the Brisbane finance and accounting recruitment market continues to show strong momentum, with contracting and temporary roles remaining in high demand. This is largely due to businesses seeking flexible solutions to manage increased workloads and specific projects as the year closes. Many organisations are relying on temporary hires to meet these needs, allowing them to maintain operational efficiency while managing costs. For further information please reach out to my colleague Aimee Allaway. On the permanent side, there is an increasing demand for skilled finance professionals, especially in junior to mid-level positions (I am currently working on several roles within the $95K-$130K range + super across various industries). In today’s competitive market, career progression, company culture, and a clear path for professional development have become crucial in attracting and retaining talent. Throughout the year, I’ve noticed that candidates are increasingly willing to leave roles early in their tenure if these key factors are not adequately met. To all the hiring managers out there, please note that candidates are often weighing multiple offers, as such a smooth and efficient recruitment process is essential for success. Do you really need a part-time Finance Manager? I’ve just seen a couple of part-time finance manager roles advertised locally. Typically this will be the only finance person in the business – and every time I see one I really want to challenge the business owner as to whether that’s really what they need. The functions a business needs to cover are typically : 🖥 Operations: Suppliers & Customers Accounts, Payroll & Staff Expenses, Apps & Systems automation, Credit Control 🎫 Compliance: VAT, Year end Accounts, Corporation Tax 📈 Performance: Management Accounts, Budgeting & Forecasting, Key Performance Indicators, Cash Flow Management 🎯 Strategy: Financial Planning & Growth, Risk Management, Treasury & Financing It would be quite rare to find someone who can cover the whole spectrum efficiently while providing value for money, so you're probably either not getting the strategic input or paying too much for the operational finance. In addition, the business owner now has to manage a finance person, and needs to cover for them while they are on holiday or off sick. Don’t get me wrong – you might hire a superstar. We're still in a society where these roles typically attract awesome mothers who need the flexibility to work shorter hours whilst they are the main childcare provider, and are willing to work for less pay and for a less challenging role than they would have commanded pre-children. A gift AND a bargain! And I would know about that 😉– It is how my business started –I was that part-time finance manager for 2 different employers, and made myself redundant from both roles quite quickly by implementing operational efficiencies. So I set up MD Accountancy Team to help more businesses do the same. If you are that business owner, looking to employ a sole finance team member for your business, I would encourage you to consider the alternative and start with a virtual finance function ✔ You get exactly the right amount of a specialist at every level of the finance function ✔ You deal with a firm whose business it is to have the best tools for the job ✔ No holiday cover, no holiday pay, no sick pay to worry about ✔ The function scales up exactly as you do – There is no cliff edge when you need an extra person, or when the agreed part-time hours are no longer sufficient for your needs, or difficult conversations if your business contracts a bit ✔ You don’t need to replace your team member if they decide to move on 💲 It might actually cost you less Worth a thought?

📣 Exciting developments in the accounting job market! Congratulations to all accounting professionals on your recent performance and salary reviews. It's a great time to celebrate your achievements and career progression🎉 We're seeing a strong demand for hybrid work options among candidates. Many are prioritising flexibility and are turning down roles that don't offer remote work opportunities. Meanwhile, salary expectations have risen, reflecting the increased cost of living. In particular, there's a notable demand for Financial Accountants and Senior Financial Accountants, with salaries starting at $110-120k plus super. Employers are keen to enhance benefits to attract top talent despite economic pressures. Salary expectations from candidates have increased if anything, with most still feeling the pinch from the increased cost of living. The trend here is that salary expectations are generally about $10k higher than previously advertised roles 12 months ago. In the last 6 months we have also seen more movement of accounting candidates up to a Senior Manager level. Financial Controllers, Management Accountants, and Analysts are still readily the top commercial roles and in Government across Australia presently for the second half of the 23/24FY. Candidates in Professional Practice - There are still candidate shortages across professional practice, with most firms hiring at either the intermediate or senior level in business services, or both in some firms. There doesn’t appear to be a great deal of movement in the candidate market, but it will likely pick up again at the end of July once lodgements have been made. Audit seems to be steady, with most firms not feeling a great need to recruit in this space in the last six months in Perth. At Thomas Executive, we're currently recruiting for two exceptional roles in Perth: Director Corporate Finance Salary: $224,000 - $273,000 per annum + benefits Ideal for seasoned finance professionals with executive-level leadership experience and CA or CPA qualified. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/gvGPVj6F Senior Tax Manager Offering a competitive salary up to $130k incl. super Perfect for talented Corporate Tax professionals with CA/CPA qualifications and strong technical skills. Join a leading mid-sized public practice firm. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/gCsNyZpq If you're a senior qualified accountant interested in these roles or exploring other opportunities, please reach out to me at [email protected] or DM. Let's discuss how we can advance your career together! 😊

This week I will have spent 11 years recruiting accounting and corporate finance professionals in Perth. I have been racking my brain for a piece of advice that rings true for everyone but that's probably fairly hard to do considering everyone's circumstances are so unique. I have landed on one piece of advice from a few years back that has probably been the most relevant when talking with candidates... > Take 3 factors - Industry experience, your primary skill set, size of companies you have worked for > When moving jobs you can typically change 1 of these factors and still have a decent chance at getting the role > It's not impossible to change 2 or even all 3 factors but it likely takes a candidate short job market, knowing someone on the inside of the new company or maybe a bit of luck It's certainly not groundbreaking advice but from the experience I've had it's fairly reliable. For example most hiring managers iv recruited for over the years are happy to consider someone without relevant industry experience so long as the candidate is an expert at the job they've applied for and they've worked in a similar size company with similar accounting issues OR You can move from financial accountant to FP&A so long as you know the industry inside out and have worked for similar size companies and so on...

We are busy! *** Senior Finance Opportunities with Elevation *** Magic Rock Brewing Co. , based in Huddersfield has created a delightful set of different beers over the years and if you are into your Hazy IPAs, Chocolate Stouts, Sours or even a good crisp lager, I thoroughly recommend giving them a try. 👌 They have an establishment in Holmfirth too which I have been to a few times and it really is a great place. The kind of place where you go for a pre-dinner drink but actually just end up just staying there for the whole night instead.......Which is exactly what happened to my wife, her sister and my mother in-law last night (on a belated mothers day celebration) when I went to pick them up at closing time instead from the restaurant they had pre-booked and later cancelled. Anyway as mentioned - it's a good place to try for sure if you are ever in that neck of the woods. 👍 🍺 The point is, they were having a good time so lost track of time. The restaurant could have also been fabulous but they never went so actually don't know what it was like or what it had to offer. It's a bit like considering new roles, you like what you are doing and you are happy doing it - you think to yourself, "no need to look really"..... However, what if the opportunity can offer something different; New people to learn from, new experiences and activities to challenge you and help break you out of that comfort zone you have got accustomed too. I do fully appreciate it comes down to what an individual wants and the timing needs to be right of course. If you are thinking of that next step right now and are perhaps qualified or nearing qualification, we would love to hear from you. Even if you are not considering a move, myself and Steve Bruce are more than happy to provide advice to support your future career aspirations. We are busy! Here are some roles we are currently managing: - Financial Accountant - Construction Sector - Roth - Up to £50K + Bonus Finance Manager - Manufacturing Sector - Roth - Up to £65K Management Accountant - Retail Sector - Mansfield - £42K Commercial Finance Analyst (Power BI) - FMCG - Roth - Competitive Salary Internal Auditor – Engineering Sector – Gainsborough – £48K Management Accountant – Manufacturing Sector – Alfreton - £50K p.s I got them a pizza 🍕 each for the way home - So (in case you wondering - probably not...) they did finally get to eat something in the end! Something I have noticed that happens time and again in organizations across all different industries and markets is a lack in willingness to hire and pay people who work in their accounting and finance departments. So many people see the accounting department as just an added cost to operating the business and look to pay as little as possible often hiring people with no actual accounting knowledge or experience. I've seen this happen through a few scenarios. 1. Posting a job that is responsible for overseeing accounting functions and employees, but not requiring much more than a high school diploma and some previous experience in an office while offering maybe $20/hour. 2. Posting a job requiring a college degree and years of experience performing certain tasks and a reasonable salary to attract higher level talent, then hiring someone under qualified at a much lower salary to save money. 3. Promoting internally and putting someone into a higher level position they have no knowledge or training for with a small raise and no training or support. The problem with this is those organizations end up with a department full of people who don't actually know anything other than how to perform tasks they have been shown to do. They have very little if any understanding of the impact of what any mistake they make could mean to the organization. Then when it comes time to answer questions or make big decisions, there is NOBODY in the accounting department that can truly provide insight. The accounting and finance office should be a major asset to any organization. Viewing it as just a cost center can quickly turn it into a liability. The old saying "you get what you pay for", also applies to the accounting and finance office. I recommend you choose wisely. #accounting #finance

Monday Morning insight from the contract desk at Hoxton Circle Finance and Accounting recruitment. Happy Veterans Day! - In 2024 76% of CFO's reported significant talent gaps throughout their departments in several private industry sectors where interim temporary F&A talent can fill those gaps. - Going into 2025 the strongest sectors we see with growing demand, and wage growth are Finance/Accounting, IT and Engineering. - According to Yahoo Finance, 75% of CPA's reached retirement age around 2020 with fewer entering the field, leaving a large talent gap causing a four-fold increase in demand for Accountants between Q1 of 2022 and Q1 of 2024. - Interim temporary Finance and Accounting talent can fill these demands and we expect these trends to continue into 2025. We offer interim, temporary or contracted/consulting recruitment needs. Not all Senior Accountant roles are created equal. Finance/accounting leaders, this could be why you aren’t getting the candidates you need. Let me explain… Earlier this year, I was tasked with finding a very specific, pretty rare accounting skill set for a repeat client. They had it listed as “Senior Accountant.” That can be many things. In this case, they were looking for someone who not only had managed cash and multiple bank accounts, but also had done reconciliations for a high volume of transactions, and had rolling cash forecasting experience. While this was a Senior Accountant role…it sounded a lot like Corporate Treasury. Because I understand both Accounting and Corporate Treasury, and how they can cross over, I knew exactly what my client was seeking. It wasn’t an easy find. (which is often why I’m involved!) Cash management/treasury work, when combined into a more general accounting or finance role, isn’t always obvious on someone’s profile or resume. The right questions must be asked and a deep dive is often required. Context is critical. One could be managing cash for a 2 location, $2 million business, with 20 transactions a month. Which won’t translate to a company with nearly $300 million in revenue, 170+ locations and thousands of transactions. We uncovered the right person - she had all 3 core requirements - and she was an excellent culture and team fit. Soon thereafter she was hired, and everything is working out. How do I know this? Because during a regular check-in she told me, “Everything is great!” Music to my ears 🙂 The key to better recruiting results is rarely more job postings. The key is being more specific in communicating what the job entails. *To both your recruiting partner and to candidates* Fix that, and you’ll start getting the candidates you want.
