In 2023 The Competency Alliance (TCA) founded a Geothermal Sector Council to focus on key skills and competencies required to support growth and development of the Geothermal Workforce. Allen Sinor was appointed to lead TCAs Geothermal Sector council and alliance member companies designated SMEs to join the council and focus on identifying skills that were transferable, skills that could be modified, and new skills required to support professional and technical personnel working in Geothermal. Over the course of the last 18 months a comprehensive competency map has been developed and 10 critical skills groups have been identified. The Sector council has also helped to prioritize the development of courses that will support employees in the Geothermal industry. Some very interesting insights into carbon capture and storage opportunities in Australia in a report released today by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA. The report identifies not only the commercial potential associated with the establishment of a CCS industry in Western Australia but also the very significant impact this would have on decarbonisation in Asia. The need for cross-border CO2 transactions in Asia Pacific - including the emergence of Australia as a storage destination - is a key driver of a major study being undertaken by ANGEA. The  Carbon Certification for Cross-Border CCS Study is developing a whole-of-region framework that will help guide the development of CCS value chains in our region. Intra Energy Corporation (ASX: IEC) managing director Ben Dunn sits down with Proactive’s Jonathan Jackson to discuss the discovery of high-grade #gold at the Maggie Hays Hill (MHH) Project in Western Australia’s Lake Johnston Greenstone Belt. Assay results from 11 rock chip samples collected in March and April averaged 2.56 g/t of gold, with the highest assay at 7.6 g/t. Three parallel quartz reefs, each more than 250 metres long, have been identified. IEC has also found significant gold and lithium targets through a soil sampling program. The northern anomaly spans 1,500 by 150 metres, with gold grades averaging 30 ppb, while a southern anomaly aligns with central quartz reefs, averaging 31 ppb. Dunn expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress of the exploration program, led by Todd Hibberd. The team is preparing to drill in mid-June 2024, pending the acquisition of necessary permits and heritage clearances. Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), is your reporting on carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) attempting to be balanced?   The below linked stories 1) on AM about the ban on CCS in QLD, and 2) online about the award of offshore permits for CCS, are not balanced!   In neither article do ABC journalists appear to have made any effort to talk to a technically qualified expert.   In neither article do the journalists talk about the strong dependency that decarbonisation scenarios of the International Energy Agency and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have on CCS.   In fact the journalists state things like:   -"…The Great Artesian Basin is a monolithic freshwater resource…" which is a horrible way to describe what the GAB is, ask a hydrogeologist. It appears to be used as part of the journalist's hook to leave the reader certain that a CCS proposal into or around the GAB must be preposterous!   -"…Carbon capture and storage is a method of offsetting the coal industry's heavy emissions…" which ignores that in the future energy system (in Australia at least) there is very little coal, so CCS is much more likely to be critical for hard or expensive to abate industries not coal fired power-generation.   And the only quotes I can see are from peak body reps of the ag industry and Greenpeace. I fully support all voices being heard, and so I'm not suggesting these quotes shouldn't be included…but the ABC is meant to be a neutral news source. The ABC is not the Guardian or Sky. Last Quarter we kicked off variability leaching work as part of our Rare Earth Options Assessment – a program of work that aims to identify alternative, capital efficient and nearer term options for producing rare earth elements at the Dubbo Project. If the RE Options Assessment is successful in identifying lower cost, shorter implementation pathways, it will open the potential for a phased development approach, alternative funding opportunities and a focused completion of the FEED services work at Dubbo. The RE Options Assessment work is scheduled for completion in H1 2025. The river is characterised by naturally highly variable flows and is the primary water source for the region, but extraction and a meteorological drying trend associated with climate change have caused declines in discharge of 53–73% since the advent of post-settlement agriculture and industry. Understanding of the spatial extent, quality, and useability of lower salinity groundwater within the surrounding Darling Alluvium, which could provide an alternative and potentially more sustainable water source, was previously limited. Here we present the findings of an integrated study combining modelled ground and airborne geophysical data, groundwater and surface water levels, hydrochemistry, lithology, and remote sensing data to delineate groundwater systems and understand the geological and hydrological controls on their occurrence. The resolution and breadth of datasets acquired and collated permit mapping of the key factors controlling occurrence and quality of groundwater aquifers, namely basement topography and hydrostratigraphy, groundwater-surface water dynamics, and inter-aquifer connectivity. On this basis the study area can be sub-divided into regions with distinctive aquifer distribution and quality, recharge mechanisms, and pressure gradients between aquifers. We also showed that the groundwater levels in the unconfined aquifer have declined, an expected outcome of the decline in discharge in the Darling-Baaka River which forms the primary recharge mechanism for the alluvial aquifers. These outputs have direct implications for key management questions including location and quantity of potentially useable groundwater, risk of saline groundwater up-coning or discharging to the river, and likelihood of groundwater extraction impacting river flows and groundwater dependent ecosystems.

I don’t often cross platform post; but this thread of tweets from Sam Berridge is an absolute must read for those that don’t understand the extraordinary tilting of the playing field towards renewables that has been happening with the current Australian energy policy settings. https://lnkd.in/gjbgYj8v At the same time as offering these extraordinary concessions; our government outright bans a technology that could quite possibly play a serious role in our energy landscape. And the only argument of the anti nuclear squad that might possibly seem to stick is that we’ve left it too late… and so because we’ve left it too late there is no point in lifting the ban now. Which is an extraordinarily poor and shallow argument. It would have been good to already have a civilian nuclear generation industry. But we’ve got a lot of other pieces of the puzzle and it’s never too late to get cracking! The Parliamentary Inquiry hearings into Nuclear Energy are well underway. I would urge everyone to view the recordings of the range of presentations given and decide for yourself which side seems to be more based on facts and science and which seems to be peddling in ideology and fear.

🚨 At a time when New Zealand is quickly implementing policies aimed to encourage and re-attract geoscience and exploration investment to reverse the disastrous effects of its short-sighted 2018 exploration ban, Australia is sending the opposite signal; both face looming natural gas shortfalls. Other countries such as Indonesia, India and many African and South American countries are encouraging exploration to meet national energy needs, displace higher polluting fuels such as coal and biomass for cooking and power generation, and to fund national development. 💡 The world's most sucessful energy basins have flourished from increasing geoscience activity, and environmental activists hell bent on stopping natural gas production know this too well. Only geoscience can provide accurate imaging to explore and produce natural gas and store carbon. Granting exploration and CCS rights without the ability to access new geoscience data- especially where recent products do not exist- is like permitting construction of a building but forbidding its foundation.

**WA'S MORAL OBLIGATION TO HELP WORLD DECARBONISE REAFFIRMED BY WA GOVERNMENT - so why no URANIUM?*** 👏 👏 Thank you WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby; for recognising that "the State does have a duty to the rest of the world in attempting to tackle climate change." “Whatever WA can do to help the world decarbonise above and beyond our share of emissions, is something we just must do. If that means putting extra pressure on our emissions as a State, it’s our burden to shoulder for a greater reduction in global emissions." “Mining our iron ore, our lithium, all our critical minerals – and yes, our gas – help other economies decarbonise.” So this begs the question: What about our URANIUM? Exporting uranium is the single highest leverage activity Western Australia can do to help the world decarbonise. We have an industry here ready to fly - and provide diversified employment options to replace those jobs lost in nickel, lithium and iron ore. Ministers Whitby; David Michael and Premier Roger Cook KNOW its time to address this issue. ⏰ Lets take the politics out of this issue and make a change for the State that is common sense. PLEASE REPOST!

I've reached a noteworthy milestone today with Geoscience Australia: 13 rejections from 13 applications across multiple levels and roles over a few years all within my field - remote sensing and earth system science focused on Antarctica, Oceania and Australia. Some with a more polar focus, others less so. Some with field time, others purely in-house. Lucky 13 was an earth observation role related to Antarctica. From my perspective, the message is clear: don't apply here. I'll be celebrating similar milestones with other organisations as they reach double figures (or more) - because we hear so much about geospatial, research and leadership skills crises, and how hard good people are to find. Let's also talk openly about how hard good people are finding things - the absolute most common thing I hear when taking career advice is 'apply at Geoscience Australia, you'd be a natural fit!'. And there's another federal agency (the one I hear would be a great fit most commonly after Geoscience Australia) running a close second... lets see if they can make the list! So it's time to close this chapter. Geoscience Australia can have a rest from reading my CV. I can rest from writing out selection criteria. I'm still very open to being headhunted by the organization - if you're in GA and want to chat, get in touch. Stopping new local gas projects always increases emissions. Europe (Germany banned fracking) stifled local gas projects ans switched to Russian gas, now US fracked gad(LNG) and future (40plus years) Qatar LNG. LNG has 18% higher associated emissions than if the gas was produced locally. NSW refuses to develop local gas resources (Narrabri and others) imports gas from SA & QLD and now building an LNG import terminal. The NSW Greens or any climate activist organisations refuse to oppose this project. Banning, produce locally or import why do climate activists choose this highest emission option “IMPORTING“.
