Some very helpful tips and insights specifically: 'Being PROACTIVE by: - always having your resume & LinkedIn profile updated - keeping your eye on job boards like SEEK & Indeed - staying visible on LinkedIn through posting & messaging - keeping in regular contact with your professional network - keeping in regular contact with recruiters - attending the occasional 'coffee chat interview' - practicing your soft skills like selling & communicating' Being made redundant can happen to anyone, anytime and without warning. It usually happens with a request to an unexpected meeting with your manager accompanied by someone from HR (who was not on the invite list) Diificult as it is, your success in finding a new role is going to depend on how quickly you can pick yourself up, dust yourself of and get back in the game of looking for a role - with the same commitment and cadence as doing a role. Some disheartening news out of Telstra in the last 24 hours with regards to the newest wave of redundancies. To those affected, I want you to know that you’re not alone in what can feel like a very challenging market. This situation does not define your career. My thoughts are with all of you during this difficult time. Given the sheer size of their existing workforce, and Market Share, I'm curious to see what the broader impact will be in the tech industry, and whether their competitors will follow suite or take advantage of this situation. Here's my two cents nobody asked for: 👩‍🔧 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The sudden influx of new talent into the market may again impact rates and salaries which were seemingly starting to stabilise after a period of rapid adjustment following the 2021-2022 boom. 𝘛𝘰𝘱 𝘛𝘪𝘱: Just because rates might come down again, that's not an excuse to put out low ball offers. Pay people what they're worth, regardless of what others might be doing. People will remember how you treated them when the market bounces back. 🎣 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐃𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬: Companies that are able to quickly absorb and integrate some of the existing talent may gain a competitive edge. 𝘛𝘰𝘱 𝘛𝘪𝘱: Evaluate your interview process - make it quick and snappy, talk about relevant projects and if you like them, offer same day! 🚧 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦: Other organisations might feel strain as they struggle to balance budgets, a strained recruitment process with the influx of job seekers into the market, and even possibly restructure in order to take advantage of this talent, which could lead to a domino effect. 𝘛𝘰𝘱 𝘛𝘪𝘱: Don't make rash decisions. Consider your strategy and your customers first. ☎ 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: Already most job seekers are feeling the frustration around lack of contact or feedback from Recruiters, Talent and Clients. As the volume of available talent increases, it will only become more challenging to get back to each and every applicant with meaningful feedback. 𝘛𝘰𝘱 𝘛𝘪𝘱: How supported is your T&A function? Are you partnering with reputable recruiters who you feel confident are protecting your brand in the marketplace? If you're not sure - ask them. Consider if you need to make any adjustments to streamline this process. Most importantly, be respectful! Is your business prepared for the 3G shutdown?🗼 Telstra has announced it will be delaying their shutdown of its 3G network until 31 August 2024, Optus will shut down their network on the same date and some providers already have. For businesses, this means that certain mobile phones, eftpos machines, tablets, security systems and potentially medical alarms that are still using the 3G network will be made obsolete in the near future. Is your data ready to ensure the success of the implementation of your new system? As high as 70-80% of system implementations fail, and of this, it has been cited that as high as 30% of the data in the system once launched is incorrect. In the countless system implementations I have been part of, I always start with “how confident are you on the quality of the data going into the new system, and what is your data preparation plan?”. We are currently working with a client who is moving from outsourcing to insourcing various assets, and is looking for a system to manage the assets once insourced. The challenge they have is the data going into the system is manually constructed in Excel, and lacks governance to ensure it is correct, accurate and timely. If not addressed, this lack of data quality issues will hinder the system implementation, provide inaccurate reports and may also put the insourcing strategy at risk. Prior to any new system implementation, it is critical you ensure your data is secure and fit-for-purpose, and to ensure your processes are documented and optimised. Only then, will you be able to truly realise the envisioned ROI. In addition to data quality, it is also critical businesses understand what data is being captured, where the data is being held and how it is stored to ensure they are meeting regulatory requirements.
