Some agencies are really struggling at the moment. If you're a Creative, Copywriter, Art Director, or Designer, starting out, without the wisdom of experience, that knife turns a little. The Creative Industry tends to track the economy. When things are great, it's great. When things aren't, it isn't. So, things 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 improve. But some of the stories I'm hearing from juniors are a tad savage. I'm sorry to say I can't run around giving everyone who deserves one a job. I wish I could. 🎁 Aussie #marketing, #advertising & #media types, I have a present for you! Not a great present to be fair, but nonetheless, a gift. Y’see, I *know* I should be reading the trade press religiously. It’s really the most basic effort one can make to stay current with what’s happening in our craft. Do I do it religiously? No, I do not. Not because the trade press is bad, or because I don’t care, it’s mostly because I’ve been conditioned to consume everything in one place. A “feed”, if you will. And since the trade press are the healthy veg buried under all the other junk I feast on, I miss a lot of it. So, because I wanted to fix this - and because I’m a huge dork - I built a thing I can quickly nip into that shows me the latest ten headlines from across the Aussie media & marketing trade press. The best ideas are the simple ones that are hard to pull off… No Home Address was a beautifully simple idea on paper, but hard to execute. Aren’t those the best - simple, but almost impossible to pull off? Simon Dalla Pozza and Lewis Aramayo idea for Aussie charity Whitelion sat pinned to the top of the wall for a while, waiting patiently for the right time to present it, the right opening. But good ideas shouldn’t wait. So, when the awesome Gavin McLeod came into Ogilvy, he and the equally awesome Luke Hawkins took it off the wall and to the client, backed by the strategic smarts from the smart Magdalena Tomislav and Toby Harrison all armed with the confidence the agency could pull it off,  the client bought it on the spot. Big credit to them. Next, the digital boffins created the bit of code, but the idea had no scale, reach or impact without the brands donating their home pages. Thanks to the work of the brilliant account team led by Damien Pashby with Sarah in support and the client's connections, big brands across the land came on board - Domain, News Corp, Broadsheet, ASAHI, NBL and CUB, plus loads more. The campaign was live for a month and the money raised gave thousands of young people access to critical services and set them on a path towards their own home address. It is such a joy to debut at Silver Mercury Marketing Awards with Genius Group in collaboration with Ikra Group and Atomic Agency! Our Far East Pollock promotion campaign yielded a pretty catch! 🔻 ✅ Bronze for Best Integrated Marketing Campaign ✅ Bronze for Best Strategy in the Food&Drink category ✅ Special award from the judges for Best Project Pitch Together with Ilya Uskoev we developed the creative concept for the campaign, creative strategy, platform, copy, brand identity, design system consulted the client and directed the teams through their implementation. Pollock is a mass produced but very under-appreciated fish. It's a great and healthy source of protein with a very low carbon footprint. Though hundreds million tons of pollock are caught every ear in the northern Pacific, for many people fish is not a big part of their everyday menu. The audience is vast, and their demands and context vary and interchange, while none of pollock's attributes is enough by itself to persuade them to buy. To add insult to injury, pollock has some reputational issues, which make it unattractive for the older generation and unnoticed by the younger people. Our client aimed to make it an everyday meal and bolster its consumption.  To face the challenges, we needed to create a Second First Trial for the audience, thus rewiring their attitude towards our under-appreciated Far East Pollock. We caught and drove the audience’s attention in various contexts and through various customer jobs and needs by building our communication with various value points for the audience around the word “Wildly” - “Wildly Tasty”, “Wildly Natural”, “Wildly Healthy”, “Wildly Handy”, “Wildly Interesting Far East Pollock”! We invested in ensuring that our second first trial was as tasty and satisfying as possible. So we bet on the evergreen content of recipes catering to every taste and skill that makes you salivate and delivers on the promise. We inspired the influencers to fall in love with our pollock and create content to best suit their natural tastes. This way we naturally engaged with the tastes of a vast and very fragmented audience with little effort. As a result, Wildly Interesting Far East Pollock won three Silver Mercury Awards! We reached 39,5 million people, 84% NPS, 145% VTR KPI, and 87% buying intent! By the way, can you remember any "second first trials" in your life? This is a special one, Waitangi Day. Working for The Quentosity Group, I've had the pleasure of crafting a script and motion that echoes the profound significance of this pivotal moment for Aotearoa. In the lack of a fitting song to exalt this occasion, I used a drumbeat from a soundbank to compose some original keys that complement the motion. At Because we collaborate with many in house teams, and are of the view that transparent, well-structured communication between teams is more crucial than ever. When client and agency collaboration works, it's a true partnership. Here are a few things we encourage clients to consider when engaging with in-house & agency resources (not an exhaustive list!): ➡ Pressed for time or short on capacity? - Consider the agency an extension of your team. Spending time initially to align on ways of working and expectations can yield smoother collaboration. ➡ Have a strong concept already? - Share it openly. This saves the agency time from presenting ideas that may have already been considered and discounted, streamlining production and maximizing creative energy. ➡ Briefed both in-house and agency teams? - Be upfront. Also ask the question of why you are doing this? ➡ Introduce your in-house team to the agency if they're assessing the work. ‘Let’s quickly jump on a call.’ Could be one of the most destructive sentences ever uttered. I’m all for being quick and nimble. But these impromptu ‘catch-ups’ give cover to chaos and only enable more bad work. It’s where the brief becomes a chain of consciousness. It can’t be noted, minuted or referred back to. It lives and dies in its own window of existence. Doing more damage than good. Worse still, it engages none of the deeper cognitive thought that forces us to stop, think critically, explain, detail and justify. As I’ve said before. Don’t explain the ask to me. Explain it as if I was someone coming in completely cold. With no context or inherited knowledge, no forgiveness curve. Processes are there for a reason. Like brakes, they’re designed to make the machine go faster. So next time, don’t reach for the phone because it’s expedient or convenient. Stop. Think about what you’re asking. Write it down.   Then think about it some more. And hit send. If there’s grey area, explain it on a follow-up. When it comes to a quick call, that may be the best call to make.
