Former Carat and Dentsu Aegis Network ANZ boss Simon Ryan reckons the new breed of nimble holdcos can outmanoeuvre the old guard – and he’s still planning to run one globally, just as his old boss Jerry Buhlmann did, helming the business that bought the smaller one he co-founded, and then the bigger fish that snapped up Aegis. With private equity grafted muscle, Ryan reckons he’s skipped five years of scale grind – but still gets to act like an independent. Now he’s hunting acquisitions, with content and creative first off the bat. He thinks local media owners need a Kerry Packer-esque bruiser in the face of global platform onslaught as jumpy marketers pile into channels that claim a direct link to sales. Retail media spending is on the rise! 🚀 The latest report from IAB Australia revealed that retail media investors spent 37% of their media and #marketing budget in retail media, up from 26% in 2023. Other key insights 👇 💡 40% of #advertisers and agencies are tapping into new budgets for retail media, with 60% of retail media spending in Australia being diverted from budgets for traditional media channels and social media. 🛍️ #FMCG, Health & Beauty and #Retail are the top 3 categories of advertisers to execute retail media campaigns. Expect more structural upheaval in the $14bn ad market in the next 12-18 months as more corporates like Commonwealth Bank’s move this week to monetise owned media assets join retailers in carving out new touchpoints to customers, says Coles360 boss Paul Brooks. Broad consensus has retailer media growing 10-20 per cent at present and will exceed forecasts of a $1.6bn to $1.9bn pool by 2025.

dentsu have released our Ad Spend Forecast for May 2024, this is a bi-annual forecast that examine major shifts in ad spend by geography and by media channel across 56 markets, and serve as an important source of client engagement. We will be looking to roll this our to our client over the coming months. Our Head of Investment Ken Lam said, “We are excited to share the latest dentsu global ad spend report, whereby worldwide ad spend is forecasted to increase by 5.0% in 2024. Or an inflation-adjusted 2.6% across top 12 markets as media inflation show signs of slowing, but remains high for Television and more sought-after, premium digital video formats. Closer to home, Australia’s forecast is adjusted to a moderate 1.8% growth in 2024 post a slower start to Q1, with some of the softer demand attributable to Easter timing and reduced spends across key categories including Food & Produce, Utilities and Government.
