More than 600 members and guests brought winning vibes to the UDIA SA Christmas Luncheon on 13 December while also raising $6,000 for Childhood Cancer Association Inc. The work of the UDIA SA is underpinned by the people that give their time and expertise to shaping and driving our advocacy, to ultimately influence the policy and reforms that create opportunity to develop the houses people call home and the places where communities and people can gather, grow and thrive. And so, at the Christmas Luncheon on 13 December, UDIA SA President Mark Pivovaroff announced two new life members in John Stimson (Stimson Consulting) and Monish Bhindi (GREENHILL) in recognition of their long-standing commitment to the UDIA and South Australia’s urban development sector. More than 600 members and guests joined together in standing ovation for the contributions John and Monish have made over three decades. IN THE MEDIA — Garage size could have a big impact on housing affordability Rules requiring bigger garages on homes across South Australia would see homebuyers pay $60k to $110k more for a new build, according to UDIA SA data modelling. South Australian councils are pushing for Planning Code changes that would see new single-car garages and carports measure at least 6m by 3.5m — an increase from current minimum size of 5.4m by 3m. UDIA SA Chief Executive Liam Golding says the jump would “make building a home even more cost-prohibitive” and would not ease on-street parking congestion as intended. The $60k average bump applies to single-storey houses in growth corridors, and the $110k figure to double-storey houses in infill areas. Liam notes that in June, South Australia froze changes to the National Construction Code for the next decade. “Changing garage dimensions goes against this principle and the local government sector should not be calling for actions in conflict with state government policy to ease pressure on housing affordability.” “Where there is a local problem, there should be a local solution, and existing powers that councils can utilise to manage parking issues should be exercised,” Mr Golding said.
