The Sydney Water Innovation Festival (SWIF25) is returning in March 2025! SWIF25 is all about Sectoral Collaboration for Innovation, offering a fantastic opportunity to connect, collaborate, and innovate with industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, innovators and professionals. Our goal is to inspire change and drive innovation in the water industry and beyond. She is the head of content and marketing at Strategyzer, developing the latest thinking and methodology to turn complex innovation challenges into simple, visual practical tools accessible by all. We're preparing to release a smart water metering RFI in January 2025 to support improved delivery of service and outcomes for our customers. The RFI seeks to gather intelligence to inform a suitable operating and delivery model for the managed installation and operation of over 1.6 million smart water meters across the Greater Sydney area. RFI responses will inform the preferred operating and delivery model for smart water meters ahead of procurement for provision of services via an RFP scheduled for Q2 2025. If your business is an Australian supplier of smart metering solutions, please ready your teams for a RFI response. The RFI will be released on Buy NSW and Sydney Water’s website as soon as it is ready. We anticipate the RFI to be available late January 2025 with responses due mid to late February 2025. The Sydney Water Innovation Festival 2025 (SWIF25) returns in March next year, where we’ll be taking innovation to the next level! 💡 SWIF25 is a unique gathering that unites diverse perspectives from industry, academia, government, and global players. Our goal is to inspire, collaborate and ignite innovative solutions to the challenges we face today. We’re excited to announce our first keynote speaker for the event: Professor Christopher Lawrence. Professor Lawrence is an Aboriginal health and wellbeing researcher. He’s been a chief investigator on many research grants, including an NHMRC tripartite study exploring Indigenous resilience in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Professor Lawrence is the Associate Dean Indigenous in Monash Information Technology and Monash Engineering at Monash University. Underpinning his work at Monash University is a focus on collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia – using technology and innovation to improve their health, wellbeing and education while fostering more ‘tech-smart’ communities through co-design. Professor Lawrence is also the creator and Head of Monash University's National Indigenous Space Academy (NISA) at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena C.A. NISA sends Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university STEM students to NASA/JPL to intern and learn how to become space explorers. In addition, Professor Lawrence leads the National Indigenous Innovation Challenge at Monash University which supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneurs and businesses by embedding innovation in their enterprises. Did you know that more than 35 cities around the world use purified recycled water as part of their drinking water supply? This includes Namibia and California since the 1960s, Virginia since the 1970s, Singapore since 2003 and Perth since 2017. Sydney Water will release an Expression of Interest (EOI) in early 2025 seeking proposals to develop and lease 12 hectares of land in Kemps Creek known as the Circular Economy Zone (CEZ). The CEZ will enable Sydney Water’s vision of an eco-industrial park that activates the circular economy in the Aerotropolis growth area and play a vital role in ensuring it becomes a resilient and sustainable city where people want to live, work and visit. The site sits adjacent to the Advanced Water Recycling Centre (AWRC), next to the M12 motorway, and five kilometres from the Western Sydney International Airport. This is a flagship site presenting a unique range of opportunities to drive systemic change in waste management, potentially harness wastewater recycling and water management synergies with the AWRC, undertake renewable energy production, and produce a host of potential circular economic products and services. The opportunity is ideal for either individual proponents, joint ventures or partnerships involving waste specialists, property funds, developers, and financiers seeking long-term investment and sustainability projects. Sydney Water’s key objective for the CEZ is to activate the circular economy by unlocking the value of the site through suitably aligned industries who will bring best practice, innovative thinking and a collaborative approach to deliver this project. Today we’ve announced the awarding of two major infrastructure contracts to Ironbark Joint Venture, with the projects to support thousands of new homes and jobs in the North West Growth Area. The contracts, with a combined value of $200 million, include the delivery of the North West Wastewater Connection and the Thornleigh Pipeline Duplication – key Sydney Water projects designed to enhance capacity in the region and ensure wastewater and drinking water systems meet the needs of customers now and in the future. Ironbark JV, comprising Bouygues Construction Australia and Rob Carr Pty Ltd, will manage the delivery of a new rising main and sewage pumping station upgrade as part of the North West Wastewater Connection, which will bolster the network leading into the Rouse Hill Water Resource Recovery Facility with a new 800-metre-long underground pipeline. Ironbark will also manage the duplication of a 1.4km drinking water pipeline between Thornleigh Reservoir and the Thornleigh-Wahroonga Water Pumping Station to increase its resilience by allowing water to be transferred between the two locations to cater for the growing population. We’re excited to be partnering with SUEZ and ACCIONA AU & NZ to deliver the first stage of a new pre-treatment plant at Prospect, which will help secure Greater Sydney’s drinking water supply during periods of extreme weather. The Suez Acciona joint venture will manage the design and construction of the $838M project, which will have the capacity to treat up to 500 million litres of water per day. The Prospect Pretreatment Plant will provide additional treatment for raw water to support the nearby Prospect Water Filtration Plant. Almost 85% of Sydney households receive their drinking water from Prospect WFP, which takes water from Warragamba Dam, Upper Nepean Dams and Prospect Reservoir. This new facility will allow the Prospect WFP to continue providing safe, secure and reliable drinking water during periods where raw water quality has been impacted, such as after large storm events where there is increased run-off into the dams, from heavy rainfall that follows bushfire events, or high inflows following extended drought periods.
