At the South Western Sydney Hand Centre, based at Fairfield Hospital, clinicians observed a notable trend where many people with traumatic hand injuries were also facing mental health problems. Find out how the team assessed around 400 patients on their first visit and again three months after their surgery to understand their recovery, particularly focusing on their mental health: https://lnkd.in/gCJ5hdsd #healthresearch #southwestsydney

“The sooner health conditions are identified in an individual the better, as we can support people to receive the appropriate care as soon as possible for the best long-term gain,” said Faye Southcombe, Director Healthy Kids & Families. In 2018, we established the Growing Healthy Kids framework and investigated clinical practices for supporting children with weight management. "A lot of the young people we support are dealing with a range of challenges, all unique to them. When you combine this with a period of self-discovery, where sometimes the gender they identify with isn’t known or necessarily accepted by others, this can contribute to the challenges they’re facing. “It’s important we’re creating a safe space where they feel welcome.” In the latest edition of Thrive, Clinical Psychologist Talia Burton shares how Campbelltown Hospital’s Mental Health Adolescent Inpatient Unit implemented the ‘The Gender Sphere’ project, improving gender affirmative practices for consumers at the unit to ensure a trauma-informed approach. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is an annual international campaign that takes place from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day. This campaign serves as a critical platform for raising awareness and mobilising action to combat the pervasive issue of gender-based violence, which affects millions globally. The 16 Days of Activism is not just a campaign; it is a movement that seeks to create a world where everyone can live free from violence and discrimination. By participating in this initiative, we contribute to a larger narrative of change that seeks to dismantle systemic inequality and build a future where gender-based violence is a thing of the past. Together, we can amplify our efforts and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by violence. South Western Sydney Local Health District has a number of events planned including an Education Forum planned for the 3 December at Campbelltown Hospital.
