Supporting youth to become valued members of our community
About us
The Stephen Michael Foundation utilise sports-based well-being, education, leadership, training and employment programs to support children and young people to become valued members of their community regardless of their cultural background, gender or social circumstance. Stephen Michael is widely considered to be one of the greatest ever players from Western Australia and certainly one of the greatest in the history of the South Fremantle Football Club. Throughout his life, Stephen has demonstrated great values and integrity and is considered the perfect role model to have a foundation honouring his name. Following its’ launch in March 2017, the foundation established key partnerships with the Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries, Sandfire Resources and West Gold Mining to initiate program activities. The foundation also consulted with local community members in Meekatharra and with Fremantle College to develop a range of school-based sporting and leadership programs. Since that time the foundation has expanded to provide a broad range of program activities reaching over 3,000 youth across metro and regional Western Australia each year.

Thanks so much to Kelmscott Senior High School for making themselves available to play against our Banksia team. The day meant so much for both the young men inside the facility, and also the young men visiting. An important experience for both teams! Looking forward to working together more in the future.
Football Win Students from Kelmscott Senior High School have visited Banksia Hill Detention Centre for a friendly game of footy with home team the Banksiaroos. The match was organised through the Stephen Michael Foundation, which regularly holds football clinics with the young people at Banksia Hill. It’s not just to develop their fitness and ball skills, but to foster principles of sportsmanship, communication, teamwork, and leadership that will help them off the field – and back in the community. The Banksiaroos came out on top, but the day proved a winner for everyone, with a callout for other schools to be a part of a positive experience both for visiting students and the young people in care.

The Stephen Michael Foundation is proud to announce the appointment of Chrissie Maus GAICD, FAMI as our first female Chairperson. Chrissie brings a wealth of experience in tough leadership positions, community engagement, and philanthropy, making her an inspiring choice by the Directors to lead the Board and Foundation into its next exciting chapter of growth. Chrissie Maus succeeds outgoing Chairperson Tom Bottrell whose tenure as Chairperson has been pivotal in shaping the Foundation’s mission. Chrissie, who has been instrumental in numerous brave social impact initiatives, will work closely with CEO Paul Mugambwa to expand the Foundation’s reach and build on our legacy of empowering youth through sport, education, and mentorship. The Foundation is also thrilled to welcome two new Directors, Christine Coyne and Neil Alweyn whose expertise will enrich our team. With over 35 years of experience, Christine Coyne is one of WA’s leading specialists in Aboriginal Engagement and Cultural Awareness. Christine has worked with a broad range of industries, including mining, construction, and oil and gas, providing tailored engagement strategies, cultural proficiency training, recruitment support, and mentorship for Aboriginal employees. Christine’s extensive experience will enhance the Foundation’s commitment to cultural proficiency and inclusive engagement. With over 20 years in the education sector, Neil Alweyn currently serves as Principal of Kolbe Catholic College. His deep understanding of today’s learning environments and the broader sector will be invaluable to the Foundation’s programs and initiatives. We look forward to this exciting new chapter under Chrissie’s leadership and to continuing our work empowering young people to reach their full potential.

Collaborating with MESH Education has been a valuable and exciting way to provide the youth in Laverton with access to developing life skills, gaining important knowledge, and acquiring an accreditation that can create new opportunities for their future. We’re eager to build on this partnership and continue bringing more impactful opportunities to the youth we support. Thank you Elle and MESH Education !
The importance of connections. A little while back, I joined a supportive community at the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce. Through them, I met Brendon Ah Chee and we had a pipe dream about a potential collaboration. He introduced me to the legendary team at the Stephen Michael Foundation. And today, nearly 18 months on, MESH Education with the help and support of SMF ran our first course together with these superstars at Laverton School, delivering accredited CPR training. AND THEY NAILED IT! Nothing makes me happier than watching the talent emerge from these youngsters.

Young people from across Walyalup gathered at Fremantle Oval to engage in activities aimed at fostering a deep and lasting appreciation for the world’s oldest continuing culture. The SMF Culture Through Sport Carnival began with a Welcome to Country led by Robyn Collard and her grandsons. Across the day, participants watched a performance of traditional dances by the Wadumbah Dance Group, ate traditional food, took part in an art and cultural awareness session with Bruce and Linda Loo, and competed in 4 traditional Aboriginal games. A special thank you to the National Indigenous Australians Agency for their generous contribution, which made this event possible. We would also like to acknowledge the Mayor of Fremantle Hannah Fitzhardinge GAICD ,Deputy Mayor of Cockburn Chontelle Stone, headspace, Palmerston Association, Neami National, City of Fremantle, City of Cockburn,Healthway , and Imagined Futures for their support in bringing this event to fruition. 📹: Hueman Media, RNF Studios

Ask R U OK? Any Day. R U OK? Day serves as an important reminder to stay connected and engage in meaningful conversations that can provide support to those experiencing challenging times. In alignment with this message, we delivered a wellbeing session this week at our Laverton Rising Leaders program. The session emphasised the importance of understanding emotions, exploring the influence of emotions on behaviour and how to express emotions in a healthy and constructive way. A key objective of the session was to deepen students' understanding of resilience as a protective factor for mental health. We discussed an often-overlooked aspect of resilience: The importance of seeking support. Building resilience is a gradual process, and it is most effective when we reach out for help from others. To apply their learning, students were tasked with designing a character that would personify Resilience within the context of the Inside Out film franchise. This activity required them to thoughtfully consider elements such as body language, facial expressions, and symbolism. At SMF, we place a strong emphasis on empowering youth to enhance their emotional literacy. We encourage young people to have open discussions about feelings, reinforcing the idea that we should be asking “R U OK?” every day, as these conversations have the potential to change lives significantly.
