Together, we stand with Australians in need until they can stand for themselves.

About us

Mission Australia is a national Christian charity motivated by a shared vision of an Australia where everyone has a safe home and can thrive. Since 1859, we’ve been standing alongside people in need across Australia, offering real hope that has lasting impact. Backed by our supporters, churches, partners and funders, we work together for the long-term wellbeing of anyone who needs us, reflecting our values of respect, compassion, integrity, perseverance and celebration. We collaborate with people experiencing homelessness or disadvantage to tackle the root causes of their challenges through providing access to safe, affordable homes and innovative, evidence-based support services. Every day we deliver homelessness crisis and prevention services, provide social and affordable housing, assist struggling families and children, address mental health issues, fight substance dependencies, support people with disability and much more. Mission Australia believes a person’s circumstances shouldn’t define their future and that given the right support, everyone can reach their full potential. That’s why we stand together with Australians in need, until they can stand for themselves.

  • The Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (#MYEFO) predicts deficits for the next four years, which will hurt those experiencing hardship and homelessness the most.  We urge the Federal Government to prioritise people who are vulnerable in #Budget2025 planning. The growing crises of homelessness, housing affordability, and the rising cost of living are already affecting too many lives, especially those struggling the most. Marion Bennett, our Executive of Practice, Evidence and Impact said: “Investing in ending homelessness isn’t a short-term expense – it’s a long-term saving. Every dollar spent on preventing homelessness reduces future costs to our healthcare, justice and community services systems. This not only improves quality of life but also boosts economic productivity, as people are better able to engage in education and work and rely less on income support.”  All in all, greater Government investment in preventing homelessness = a healthier, safer and more productive Australia. With government leadership, we can #endhomelessness through: 💰 Raising JobSeeker and other income support to at least $82/day and increase maximum threshold of Commonwealth Rent Assistance by 60%.  🏡 Building 1 million new social & affordable homes over 20 years.  💡 Creating a $500M Homelessness Prevention Transformation Fund to stop people becoming homeless in the first place.  👦👧 Funding youth-specific housing, including Youth Foyers. More than 3,000 people seek help from homelessness services like Mission Australia’s every hour. • Tis the sea-son 🌊 The crew from our community shed in Cairns, spend a morning beachcombing at Wangetti beach. They scoured the shores for nature’s hidden treasures, collecting driftwood, seed pods and shells to be transformed into unique Christmas creations. So much coastal charm and creative flair!

  • Our groundbreaking partnership with Great Southern Bank has been recognised as a QLD State Finalist for Best Strategic Partnership Award by Fundraising Institute Australia! 🎉 🌱We’re proud to work together with Great Southern Bank to drive positive change in our communities. Together, we're transforming community housing across Australia, delivering safe, affordable, and energy-efficient homes to those who need it most. Our planned program of upgrades includes solar panels, water tanks, insulation, window glazing, LED lighting and energy and water meters. These features promote overall health and wellbeing for tenants, while reducing carbon emissions. Early results from a similar project in Forster, NSW, show tenants saving an average of $500 annually on energy costs. 🏠 Congratulations, team. This partnership is a great example of collaboration in driving real, positive change in our communities.  #CommunityHousing #StrategicPartnership #Sustainability

  • At 64, Susan faced homelessness, joining a rising number of older women who have spent their lives caregiving, working low-paid jobs, and navigating financial hardships—only to find themselves vulnerable without a safe place to call home. But in Brisbane, Fiona Terry and Janet Maher want to transform how we support older women in housing crises.  They worked on a three-year funded pilot project to help older women to find pathways out of homelessness. Alongside housing support, the program offered social, health and wellbeing services. With the pilot now complete, Fiona and Janet hope to secure further funding to continue this vital work and are calling for lasting change by demanding a rethinking of support systems and affordable housing for older women. Their work highlights an urgent need: dedicated services and policies that recognise the contributions and unique challenges of women who’ve given so much to our communities.

🌻Our Youth Advisory Group had a great day at Triple Care Farm! 🚜 Six members of the group travelled from all across Australia to see the Farm and learn how the program works. The program staff at the Farm gave them an in-depth tour of the facilities, including David Martin Place Withdrawal Centre, the Residential Rehabilitation Centre, and the art and education rooms. Some of the young people currently staying at the Farm for treatment also spoke with members of the Youth Advisory Group, talking about their experiences of the program. Then, the Youth Advisory Group sat down for a series of workshops, sharing their perspectives and discussing plans for next year. The members each bring their unique expertise to the Group, and it was fantastic to see their energy and ideas coming together. Thank you to all the members who attended - Harry Waterworth, Jessica Pereira, Joshua Patrick, Mijica L., Jonathan O'Brien, and Taeg Twist. We are so thankful to the staff at Triple Care Farm for facilitating this great day, and particularly grateful to the young people in the program who were gracious with sharing their time and stories.  💚
