At 64, Susan faced homelessness, joining a rising number of older women who have spent their lives caregiving, working low-paid jobs, and navigating financial hardships—only to find themselves vulnerable without a safe place to call home. But in Brisbane, Fiona Terry and Janet Maher want to transform how we support older women in housing crises. They worked on a three-year funded pilot project to help older women to find pathways out of homelessness. Alongside housing support, the program offered social, health and wellbeing services. With the pilot now complete, Fiona and Janet hope to secure further funding to continue this vital work and are calling for lasting change by demanding a rethinking of support systems and affordable housing for older women. Their work highlights an urgent need: dedicated services and policies that recognise the contributions and unique challenges of women who’ve given so much to our communities.
Such wonderful women run this program. Thank you for everything you do for women who experience homelessness later in life. You are angels💖
This is heart touching <3
this is a great start to help women that are at risk of being homless.
