The ocean is dying; this is not a joke, and it is not a political scare tactic; it is dying, and, like it or not, humans are a huge part of the problem. I have always been an aquatic mammal, and protecting the world's oceans in any way I can has always been a top priority to me, but last night I was confronted with a practice that even I, who have spent a great part of the last four years studying the ocean and practices that can harm it, didn't know about. (https://lnkd.in/g-k3dEMW) Deep below the ocean’s surface, the seabed is teeming with life, home to millions of species, many of which are yet to be discovered. It is also the largest carbon sink, working to stabilise the planet’s climate, but there is a plot underway with mining companies working tirelessly to turn a vast area of the Clarian-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) – spanning over 3 million square kilometres in the Pacific Ocean – into the world’s largest mine. Deep-sea bed mining is the process of extracting mineral deposits from the ocean floor, typically from depths greater than 200 meters. As terrestrial mineral resources become increasingly depleted and the demand for metals continues to rise, deep-sea bed mining is becoming a more viable option. However, despite its potential to meet these growing demands, research warns that deep-sea mining could have devastating consequences, including the destruction of fragile marine habitats and the extinction of species. Last night, the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club, Deep Rising, in partnership with Emotive | Creative Agency, launched a global impact campaign encouraging people across the globe to reclaim the deep seabed from mining companies. Today, inspired by the documentary, Deep Rising, we launched a global campaign ‘The World’s Largest Ocean Dispute’, turning that purpose toward deep sea mining - one of the greatest threats to our planet’s last untouched wilderness 🌏 🌏 The campaign is urgently encouraging people to reclaim the deep seabed from mining companies, whose intent is to turn the largest living space on Earth into the largest mining site on earth. In a world-first, ‘The World’s Largest Ocean Dispute’ campaign has divided the deep seabed into 8.17 billion GPS coordinates - representing everyone on the planet - and mapped them across the seabed currently claimed for mining.
